I Never Knew You Celebrate Lit Book Review and Giveaway

“I Never Knew You” is a contemporary Christian book by author Patrick Higgins. This powerful fiction book is saturated with scripture and biblical references. The message is so moving that it will linger in your mind a long time after finishing the book.

The author takes on the subject of false prophets, false preachers, and the “name it and claim it” mega-churches. Using a riveting story, believable characters, and most importantly scripture, the author shows readers the true way to God and what He wants for His children. Illustrations of how people misconstrue Bible verses or twist them to suit their own needs are eye-opening. He also warns against adding our own words to God’s.

This is the story of highly successful Charmaine and her Christian walk. She belongs to the Blessed and Highly Favored Full Gospel Church of Seattle. Her boyfriend, Rodney, is music leader. The pastors, Imogen and Julian, are both mentors and friends of the couple. Everything is going smoothly until a pastor from China is introduced to Charmaine in a business deal.

The author has a spectacular style of writing. The point of his book is clear. He wants to bring glory to God and help other people find salvation. This book is so captivating, I read it from front to back in one day. I could not put it down! So many parts of it stand out to me even now. The church in China is unforgettable. The plane ride home touched all of my emotions.

I highly recommend this book to everyone. If you have had questions about those reward driven churches, please read this. If you are searching for Jesus, this book will show you the way. It would make a wonderful book club selection. There are no discussion questions in the back, but groups should have no trouble coming up with some of their own.

This definitely gets a 5 star rating from me. It has so many life and spiritual messages sprinkled throughout it that it is phenomenal. This would make a perfect gift for any reader. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit but these are my own opinions.

Maryann’s Hope Celebrate Lit Tour

Maryann’s Hope is Book Four in the four book series, The Amish Charm Bakery Series by author Molly Jebber. This is a delightful and heartwarming story that will take you into Amish Country. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Maryann’s Hope had my interest from. the beginning unto the end. I was immediately invested in the story and the characters. Author Jebber has a smooth writing style. Her words flow evenly over the pages and are easily understood. It is evident that she is very familiar with all things Amish. Her characters are authentic and believable.

This is the story of Maryann. She has come back home with her daughter after her husband dies. Maryann’s past has some heartaches, but Andrew has given her a relationship full of trust, love and faith. She is coming out of her shell and learning from live again. They have decided not to keep secrets from each other in their relationship. Secrets damaged their old relationships.

The story is filled with unexpected twists and turns as well as timeless spiritual and life lessons. Exploring grief, forgiveness, family responsibilities, and faith are just a few of the lessons readers will encounter. The problem with keeping secrets is also approached.
 
I love that author Molly Jebber’s books are filled with love for others and for God. She sprinkles her books with scripture and gives glory to God through her writing. I definitely recommend this book to all lovers of Amish fiction. It gets a 4 out of 5 star review. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit but these were my honest words.

Maryann’s toddler, Betsy, will make you laugh, as well as other children of her friends in the story. The bakery desserts will make your mouth water, and you’ll imagine the aroma of cinnamon, sugar, and warm bread.

The Amish Charm Bakery is where friends come to enjoy a break, share secrets, solve problems, and laugh and cry.

On a personal note, this year has been an exciting one for our family in spite of COVID-19. My daughter, Misty, is getting married, and we love our future son-in-law, Kevin. They are having a small wedding due to the virus, but it hasn’t dampened any of our enthusiasm for this special day. God has blessed all of us with making all the plans go smoothly, and they’ve enjoyed their marriage counseling with Pastor Roger.

Pastor Roger asked them to put their first name in the verses in Corinthians Chapter 13 of the Bible, as an example of how they should feel about each other. Such as Misty is patient, and Misty is kind. I thought about that in my marriage to Ed. He is all those wonderful things to me. But I need to be more patient! So I’m learning along with Misty and Kevin! LOL

I pray that MARYANN’S HOPE will bring you a fun escape into the small Amish town of Charm, Ohio during the period of 1913-1914!

Endless Mercy Celebrate Lit Book Tour

Endless Mercy written by award winning, best selling authors Tracie Peterson and Kimberley Woodhouse is Book Two in their Treasures of Nome Series. It is set in 1904 Nome, Alaska. If you haven’t read Book One, Forever Hidden, you will not have a problem following the story. This is a beautiful albeit gritty at times Christian historical romance.

This series is about the three Powell sisters. In book one we meet Havyn. In this book it is the story of Madysen. I love that they live on a farm and have animals. Havyn has chickens and Madysen has sheep. Their mother has died and a kindly neighbor lady from town, Granny Beaufort, fills in and listens with a loving heart. She is a charming character.

This is Madysen’s story. She is a talented, beautiful, feisty young red haired woman that dreams of entertaining on stage. She has issues she is working with on forgiveness and grief. Her dead father suddenly appears making her confused, angry, and cold. Thankfully she has her beloved sheep to calm her.

This is also the story of Daniel. He is angry at God because of the death of both of his parents. He wants to start a dairy. With his help, the girls farm has started making cheese. They needed this to sustain them. His relationship with Maddy is up against competition with the entertainment manager, Buddy.

The girls continue their regular worship of God and invite Daniel to join. They never force him. While he declines it seems he is listening and having a change of heart. Maddy is, too. It is refreshing to read a Christian fiction book that has so much spiritual content woven into it.

These two award winning authors make a fabulous writing team. The style is lovely. The story is smooth and flows with an even pace. All of the characters are well described and believable. The lessons presented in this novel are timeless. Twists and turns make it fun. This book, and series, is truly wonderful. It has historical fiction, romance, suspense, mystery, faith, and life lessons. I enjoyed the Christian message of forgiveness and mercy. 

I highly recommend this captivating book. It gets a 5 out of 5 stars from me. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit but these are my honest words.

Book three will release January 2022 and will finish out the Powell girls’ stories with the eldest, Whitney.

This series is very near and dear to us because the Powell sisters in the books are actually named after three beautiful girls we adore. They were music students of mine in Colorado and when Tracie and I had a book signing for In the Shadow of Denali, the red-headed, musical sisters all came. Tracie made the comment that someone should write a book about them…so of course…we did!

I wish you could hear the girls play and sing in real life. They are such talented musicians, and I love them dearly. Huge thanks go to Monica and Merle Powell for allowing us to take their three girls and make fictional characters out of them.

The Dressmaker’s Secret Celebrate Lit Book Tour and Giveaway

The Dressmaker’s Secret is a Christian historical novel by author Kellyn Roth. This is geared toward women and has a light romance as well as a mystery. Having never read anything by this author before, I really did not know what to expect. It was a page turning, pleasant surprise to find a new author that I like.

This is the story of Claire Chattoway and her daughters, Alice and Ivy. She is a single mother trying hard to protect her children in all areas of life. Precocious daughter Alice wants to find her father. Alice believes he is the key to her mother’s happiness. Unwed mothers are taboo so Claire’s story is only known by her long time maid.

I could not put this book down as different scenarios played through my mind. The story is fast paced and characters are complex. The English dialog is quaint and believable. The author uses vivid descriptions that placed me smack dab in the center of her story. It was wonderful.

There are timeless spiritual and life lessons woven throughout this captivating story. I noticed as I read certain sections that I would nod my head in agreement. It is a very lovely story with twists and turns galore. This just happens to be Book One in the Alice and Ivy Chronicles. I am eager to read the second book.

I highly recommend this splendid novel. Escape to England and make a few friends by reading it. It would be a great book club selection. I happily rated it 5 out of 5 stars. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but this is my own, honest opinion.

I’ve honestly never rewritten a book as many times as I rewrote The Dressmaker’s Secret, and I hope I never do.A first draft flew out of me one November when I was fourteen, and before the next November had come around, I’d gone through twelve drafts, changed points of view multiple times, and eventually rewrote the whole thing from scratch.The ending especially went through many, many versions … until at last I settled on the final. It has often been said that it takes a village to raise a child. This is absolutely true. Between parents, grandparents, other family, and friends, children are nurtured in many ways. I was fortunate to have a large village caring for me. One of the leaders of my village was my aunt, Eva June Wilson. I affectionately called her Auntie June. I treasured her. A few days ago she was called home by Jesus. Yes, I am broken-hearted that we are now separated, but I know with certainty we will see each other again.

Auntie June was my father’s elder sister by two years. She was a delightful, quaint, lovely woman. From my earliest memories of her, I knew that she loved me. I recall being rocked in a rocking chair and swung in a porch swing by her. She liked to be in motion and passed on that love to me. Her husband, my Uncle Sam, was a jokester and teased me relentlessly. Both of these relatives have special places in my heart. Everyone that knew my aunt loved her and sang her praises. She was one of a kind, the best kind.

I learned many things from my aunt. She had a sharp mind and gave sage advice:

a. Family is forever. Always be ready to help them. Never forget their stories.

b. Forgiveness is a requirement and not an option. Do not withhold it.

c. There are certain words a lady doesn’t say, and always remember you are a lady.

d. If you can’t say anything nice, then be quiet.

e. If you don’t know what to do, pray. You can’t go wrong talking to Jesus.

f. Don’t go where you aren’t invited. If they wanted you there, you would know.

g. If it’s not your story, don’t tell it. That is called gossip.

h. Be nice to everyone. You don’t know what they have been through in life.

i. Look for the silver lining in each situation. There is alway something good

j. Make sure your lipstick is fresh. Somebody might take your picture.

k. No one loves you like your family. Always tell them you love them.

There are many other things she taught me. She and Grandmother were skilled in the kitchen. They could cook, freeze, and can until the cows came home. Chicken tasted better fried in lard. The best thing to drink was iced tea. It was okay to use paper plates so you could spend more time with your guests. German tomatoes were fine raised besides the patio, and a yeast roll was better than a cookie anytime. Angel rolls were fluffy and great to have on hand for surprise company. If you had more than enough, share with someone. When you hug someone, close your eyes and savor it. Let your love seep through to them.

Auntie June was fun. She loved playing games and winning. When she lived on her farm she had peacocks. They were beautiful but squealed like a cat or baby. Since she had received a teaching degree, she was the best person to explain anything. Her patience was unmatched. She was a natural born story teller. We had no trouble talking for hours. I could call her and chat for an hour, unless her Kentucky Wildcats were playing ball. Then I needed to wait until after the game. She was frugal but not stingy. Things were cared for and lasted years. I remember the same family room loveseats, living room set, bedroom set, and even lamps at her house. Perhaps being content was her secret.

Auntie June grew up in Southern Indiana, but moved to Kentucky to live with family there after her sophomore year. She skipped her junior year of high school to graduate early with her cousin, Phyllis Ann. After graduation they attended college together. My grandmother was anxious that if she did not have a college buddy, my aunt might not go. She went and graduated with a bachelors degree in business. Like many others in her family, she became a teacher. Learning was important, and she continued to read and educate herself. I valued her opinion.

She was an animal lover. When she lived in Louisville, I remember her dog, Smoky. It was a black cocker spaniel, and I thought it was the most beautiful dog ever. A few years later they moved to the big farm house after her father-in-law died. She had a gorgeous collie. I remember cattle, a calf, a pony, kittens, a dog, and the peacocks at that stately place. I was certain the country estate had seen some civil war action and had many untold stories itself. Like my granddaddy, she was petrified of snakes and passed that right along to me. She had a few heart stopping stories of being trapped inside her house by a big, very big, snake.

My family lived in Clarksville, Indiana. Once when Auntie June had surgery she came to our house to recover. Grandmother stayed as her ever attentive nurse. I remember sneaking to chat with her. She would pat the side of the bed and wink. I quietly asked her if this surgery meant she could have babies or could not because she would be a wonderful mother. She told me that she was praying God had the right baby He would send just for her. Well, He did. In fact, in His generous way, He sent her three, twin sons and a daughter, my cousins: Kevin, Gavin, and Ruth Ann. She was devoted to her children, grandchildren, and greats.

Not only did I love her, but I respected her. Her life was full of trials, but she managed each one with a smile. The glass was always half full for her. She had a life full of hard work, but she also volunteered at church and other places. She was very giving. Others were more of a concern to her than herself. Mother and Auntie June remained close after my daddy died. Many times they chatted and laughed like schoolgirls. They shared precious memories.

I was the first grandchild on Daddy’s side so obviously I was spoiled rotten. Many nights and weekends were spent at my grandparents and later my aunt’s. I was like a sponge wanting to soak up every bit of information I could about the Winburn branch of my family tree. Now that Auntie June is gone I can no longer glean any more information.

Auntie June was a Woman of Faith. She walked her faith as well as talked about it. She loved church and her church family, too. There are many story of God’s blessings in her life. He healed her from breast cancer and various other maladies. He kept her safe during the many (many) storms in her life. She live a long life of 91 years. Auntie June worshipped and praised God for guiding her through them all. She told me that her deepest desire was that all of her family would know Jesus and be saved. She would laugh and say “you know there will be enough room in Heaven.”

During our last conversation she spoke to me a lot about our family: her parents, my parents and sister, her children, grandchildren, and greats. Family was important to her. She spoke a lot about her brother, my father. This was the first time she had talked about Daddy in a very long time. We talked of the goodness of God. She always told me she loved me before we hung up. I assured her of my love, too. The very next day she got sick and after a week went to Glory. People I tell me “I’m sorry you lost your aunt.” Dear friends, I did not lose her. I know exactly where she is. She has gone home and is happier than she has ever been. I miss her more than mere words could express, but I will see her again in Glory. Maybe our rooms will be close together.

The Thief of Blackfriar’s Lane by award winning author Michelle Griep is a captivating Victorian English tale. It is a combination of romance, intrigue, mystery, adventure, and even fun! Within the first few pages, I was invested in the story and characters. My interest held all the way until the end.

This is the story of Kit Turner and Jackson Forge. These two prove that opposites can and often do attract. Kit is a thief that wants to help those in need by robbing from the rich and giving to the poor. Jackson is a down on his luck police officer who is at a pivotal point in his life and career.

Their paths have crossed a few times. Now through a series of unfortunate events, it seems they each need the other person’s help. Words and sparks fly as they try to solve a mystery. What a thrilling adventure this was!

I appreciated the attention to detail in this story. Obviously the author did research before starting her writing. The story is well planned and well written. The characters are quirky and multi layers. It was easy to feel what they felt because I was so invested in the story. There are plenty of twists and turns to make things interesting.

I loved this book. It is perfect for a winter escape to Victorian London. There are life and spiritual lessons heavily woven throughout this story. I highly recommend it. A reading group would love this as a selection. There is much to discuss with friends. It gets a 5 out of 5 star rating from me. A copy was provided by the publisher, but these are my own honest opinions.

Zootopia in Victorian London

I admit it. I like kid’s movies. You know, the animated sort that entertain both young and old alike. One of my favorites is Zootopia, a rollicking adventure about a bunny whose dream it is to be a police officer and make the streets of the big city safe for all animals. In fact, I loved it so much that I thought why not set it in Victorian London?

So I did.

And that’s what The Thief of Blackfriars Lane is all about, but that meant I had to do a little digging into the history of police force of the late 1800’s. Here’s what I learned…

The Metropolitan Police (founded in 1829 by Robert Peel) was composed mostly of young men, many of whom were recruited from rural areas. Few were from London, the philosophy being that they would thus be free from local patronage and influence.

It is a bit of an anomaly that hero Jackson Forge and his friend, Officer Baggett, carry a sidearm. Some did, but most relied on truncheons. It was up to the officer. Revolvers were usually only supplied after the death of a police officer by an armed criminal, at the discretion of the Divisional Officer, or if a constable requested to use one during night duty. In 1884, after the deaths of several police officers, the Home Office ordered nearly a thousand revolvers from Webley & Scott to be issued to branches of the London police. . .which is where I got the idea of a shipment of guns for the villain to attempt to steal.

Police detectives were recruited from within the ranks of existing uniformed officers. There were actually women on the force at the time, employed as police matrons. But these were behind-the-scenes workers, tasked with guarding women and children. If my heroine, Kit, were to be out in public, serving as Jackson’s assistant, she’d have to keep her job secret. The first female police officer wasn’t seen on the streets until 1919.

And so, armed with that information, I wrote the adventures of not a police bunny and a con artist fox, but of Jackson Forge, a fresh-faced constable, and his thorn in the side, swindler Kit Turner. Snatch up your own copy and enjoy a visit to Victorian London!

Quincy and Priscilla at the Lowell House Celebrate Lit Book Tour and Giveaway

Quincy and Priscilla at the Lowell House by talented wordsmith Caryl McAdoo is my favorite of all the books this author has written. I was immediately engaged in the story and with the characters. This historic romance is wonderful.


This is the tale of head chef, Quincy. He makes wonderful dishes for the Lowell House in Dallas Texas. It is also the story of Priscilla. Her father has recently died and her mother has gone to stay with a relative. Priscilla has been matched with Quincy by a matchmaker, unbeknownst to him.


I loved this story. It is filled with lovable characters, Christian lessons, and scripture. The descriptions of cooking and the food were spot on. The conversations were delightful and realistic. Friendships between character were sweet. The characters were well defined and relatable. There are a few twists and chuckles throughout this sweet tale.


I highly recommend this matchmaker bride book. It is a page turner that you will not want to put down until you have finished the entire book. I rate it 5 out of 5 stars. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit but these are my honest words.

Of Ink and Sea Celebrate Lit Book Tour and Giveaway

Author Clarissa Kae has written a split time historical/contemporary romance. This riveting novel is steeped in legend and has some paranormal episodes. As a reviewer of Christian books, this one left me a wee bit confused.

This is the complex contemporary story of Sienna. Her family is a bit odd, and she has the closest relationship with her grandfather. It is also the story of Ioan, her grandfather’s neighbor. Sienna and Ioan met when she was very young. They forged a strong bond that she cannot remember.

Set in Wales and England, the descriptions are vivid and take readers right to the story. I could visualize things happening. The conversations sounded smooth and authentic. Characters were well rounded and realistic. The writer has a smooth style of writing. Her story was well thought and well written. There are some great twists and turns to keep readers guessing.

There are some timeless life lessons tucked inside this book. However, I searched without success for the spiritual or faith ones. That was the major disappointment I had with this book. It gets a 4 star rating from me.

A Heart’s Gift Celebrate Lit Book Tour and Giveaway

A Heart’s Gift by talented storyteller Lena Nelson Dooley is a Christian historical romantic fiction novel. It has so many twists and turns in it that you will be kept on your toes throughout the entire book. This is Book 1 in the author’s Love’s Road Home Series. 

Set in 1890s gold rush era of Colorado, this is the story of Lorinda and Franklin. Their story is touching. The author keeps God and a spiritual message in the forefront of this novel, which is just one of the reasons that I loved it so much. 

I was immediately captivated by the story and characters. With her deft writing ability the author took me to the Rocky Mountains to a cattle ranch. I learned a few things while I fell in love with some of her characters and despised the others. 

Author Dooley has a wonderful style of writing. Her romance was sweet and yet I could feel the tension building between Lorinda and Franklin. The dialog was authentic and flowed smoothly. Emotions jumped off of the pages and into my heart. 

The secondary characters were amazing. I enjoyed the housekeeper. She was a voice of calm and wisdom at times when needed. The heart to heart discussions between men were right on point. Some of them even made me chuckle.

I highly recommend this wonderful book. It is full of surprises, life lessons, inspiration, mystery, danger, and romance. I found it to be a page turner that I was unable to set down. It receives a 5 out of 5 stars from me. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

THE STORY BEHIND A HEART’S GIFT

I’ve been a lover of history for decades. In college and graduate school, all my elective courses were history. Of course, I chose the countries and eras I wanted to learn about. When I began writing novels, my first one was a contemporary story. After that at least 75% or more of my novels have been historical, from 1805 through the early 20thcentury.

I’ve always been fascinated by the relationship between Joseph and Mary the mother of Jesus. The Bible doesn’t give us a lot of information about their relationship. But by his actions, we can assume that Joseph believed the angel and Mary about her baby. He didn’t do the usual thing and put her away quietly. Instead, he protected her, and from the day He was born, he became the earthly father of Jesus. I’ve often thought about what that meant for Joseph and for Mary. When I wrote a story of a marriage between a man and a single mother, I used the emotions that I feel God has revealed to me about their relationship.

The first time I read a marriage of convenience novel, I loved it. And I’ve read quite a few. I’ve also written a few. A Heart’s Gift is one of them. This book was an easy and interesting book to write.

I’m what’s called in the industry a seat-of-the-pants author, more or less. I do have the complete outline of the story in my head. When I sit down to write, I know where I’m going, but I don’t have every single scene plotted out as some authors do. And I pray a lot. During the time I’m writing a book, God drops ideas into my mind. Not just while I’m writing, but other times, too. That’s the exciting thing about writing. This keeps it fresh for me.

During the writing of A Heart’s Gift, there’s a place where I just stopped and said, “God, what am I going to do now?” When you get there, you’ll know what scene I mean, but I don’t want to give a spoiler.

I never dreamed that the book would turn into a suspense novel in the last quarter of the book, but God knew. And it made it a better book.

The Magic of Ordinary: A Memoir is a loving tribute from author Melissa (Missi) Johnson Gouty to her amazing father, Melford (Mel) Johnson. This nostalgic look of family and life in a small Midwestern town had me turning page after page. It was a bright, sunshiny smile on the face of a dark dreary day. You must read it and have your spirits lifted, too.

Author Gouty and I went to school together. She was one of my sweetest friends. So many of her memories mirrored my own. Even though our lives were vastly different, they were extremely similar. That’s what happens in small towns. They bring people together and give them common threads. I found myself nodding in agreement as I read this love letter. It is nothing less than beautiful.

I enjoyed the style that talented wordsmith Gouty uses in writing. Her story is transparent and brutally honest. There is a warmth to it. Readers will feel like they are chatting over a cup of coffee or at least, I did. It brought tears to my eyes at times, many of them from laughing.

There is a plethora of life and spiritual lessons woven throughout these exceptional stories. It reveals the working of a Christian family, a man of faith, how to appreciate nature, and how to simply enjoy life. The author proudly announces that she never recalls her father swearing or using rough language in situations when most men would. Can you do the same?

It is difficult to choose a favorite tale. I enjoyed them all for various reasons. There is just one place that I found myself uncomfortable. In one of the stories the author uses the crass term for feces. (Yes, I am a prude.) It is one of the words that my Southern Grandmother instilled in me (obviously) that a lady never says. I realize I am the exception now and not the rule, but it still bothered me.

I highly recommend this charming memoir to everyone. Baby Boomers will certainly relate to the references made. There are discussion questions in the back so it would make a nice book club selection. I give this a 5 out of 5 star rating.
