Cast: 1 Peter 5:7 by author Richard J Nisen is an inspirational Christian non-fiction book that was so encouraging. The major focus of this book is trusting God fully. It is scripturally based and excellently written. I found it easy to understand and follow.

Each chapter provides examples of living 1 Peter 5:7 in life. Biblical references and ideas for ways to reflect and grow are also included. This is a book that will help everyone and will be great to go back and read.

I highly recommend this for individuals and small groups. There is much to learn and think about from this inspirational book. It would make a great gift for anyone that might be struggling. I rate it 5 out of 5 stars. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

If you had told me I would write a 168-page book based on one verse in the Holy Bible, I would have said you were crazy. God works in mysterious ways, and I believe He inspired me to write this book, a project that took three years to complete, in order to help others who are struggling.

During the process of battling earth-crushing anxiety and depression, I learned how to cast my cares to the Lord and leave them with Him. The result: He would take care of all my cares and handle my problems for me. What I discovered is that casting your cares is a skill that one has to learn. His Grace’s Governess Celebrate Lit Book Tour

His Grace’s Governess by author Jackie Killelea is a Christian Regency Romance. This is book one in the Saving the Spinsters Series. I was immediately invested in the characters and the story. Once I had started this book, it was difficult to put it down. I was captivated and wanted to keep on reading.

Set in London, England in 1817, this is the stunning story of Eleanor Clairbridge. She has been unselfishly helping her mother after the death of her father, but now they need more money. Eleanor’s prayer is answered when she is hired as a governess for Duke of Albermarle, His Grace, Edmund Colhampton’s young niece, Rose.

I really liked the author’s style of writing. Twists and turns made the story exciting. Characters were lovable and realistic, but some were horribly mean and downright bullies. One of my favorites was young Rosie. She added humor and light. The butlers certainly showed how fond they were of their employers.

All conversations sounded authentic to the time period. The descriptions took me to a time and place that I had never been, and allowed me to easily imagine it. The message of Christian faith and love is delightfully woven throughout this beautiful novel. It was definitely demonstrated throughout the characters’ actions. This is a sigh worthy love story between two people carrying hurt from the past.

I highly recommend this mesmerizing story. It was entertaining and inspiring. A reader group would enjoy this as a selection. There is so much to discuss. It receives a 5 star rating from me. A copy was provided but these are my honest words.

In His Grace’s Governess, much trouble befalls Edmund and Eleanor as they attempt to sort out their close proximity to and burgeoning feelings for one another, but there is one scene in particular that I enjoyed researching.

In one scene of the novel, Mr. Roskilly(the gardener at Ivy Grange Estate) worries at Eleanor plucking the plant Rabelera–otherwise known as Greater Stitchwort–from the ground. He fears that danger will befall Eleanor if she takes it from the garden and Eleanor, misunderstanding him, even believes at one point that Mr. Roskilly might be threatening her. But, why is Mr. Roskilly so worried? Is he really so concerned that Edmund’s hackles will be raised when he sees that Eleanor has plucked a few mere flowers from the garden–and with his niece, no less?

Indeed, that is not where his concern lies, for if you read the passage closely, you’ll see that Mr. Roskilly is Cornish. This is an important factor. When doing my research for the novel, I found that, in Cornwall, it is believed that Greater Stitchwort is the property of the pixies. It is believed that to pick it is to take it from them and to anger them, and if you anger them then there is all the chance that they may well retaliate for you having stolen what was theirs. Truly, they may even enchant you, according to legend. Having read this and being sufficiently intrigued, the scene was born! I do hope you get as much enjoyment out of it as I do.

Here is an excerpt from it so you know what I’m referring to:

“Hope yer walk’s went well. ’Tis a fine day fer one.” He grinned, revealing a mouth full of crooked teeth. His Cornish accent was thick, with a friendly tone to his voice.

Eleanor returned his smile and nodded. “It certainly is. What better way to spend a morning than to enjoy the sun in these beautiful gardens? They’re the finest I’ve ever seen.”

She could’ve sworn there was a hint of a blush on the man’s tawny face. “I than’ ye, miss. We do our righ’ bes’, and keepin’ i’ as i’ is makes ’is Grace ’appy. Ever since…” The man trailed off, a growing look of concern on his face.

What had he been about to say? Something about the duke or his family?

“Greater Stitchwort.” He spoke with a grave edge to his words, looking intently at the flower in Rose’s hand.

Eleanor’s gaze flitted from the man to the flower, her brows furrowing. “Is something wrong, sir?”

The man tilted his head, flicking his eyes to the side in a plea for a private conversation.

I will not say whether this decision to pick the plant affected Eleanor later on in the story or not, but I’ll leave you with this: Do consider all of the plants you touch before you decide to place your hand upon them and pull them from the ground.

My Review:

The Trail to the Lonely Tree is Book 1 of the Jaguar Oracle Series by author Kurt Mähler. This is a Christian, Magical Realism Fantasy novel. The eye catching cover on this book intrigued me and played a large part in why I signed up for this book tour. I am so glad it did, too. This book is an utter delight filled with hope, inspiration, and faith.

This is the story of Oracle, the jaguar, and his adventures. His friends are some animals and a young boy. They are charming as they embark on a mythical journey to fulfill a prophecy. These characters are cleverly crafted and easy to engage. They are adorable and wise.

The author has a lovely style of writing. From the beginning I was invested in the story and later the characters. His plot seemed plausible and not silly. I found myself turning page after page to continue the story. It had me captivated.

This tale has stayed with me since finishing it. I was challenged to define myself. It made me want to know the story God wrote about me. I really loved this book. In fact, I am still pondering it.

This would make an amazing book club selection. There is so much to discuss. It gets a 5 star rating from this reader. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

During my eleven years in Afghanistan with my wife Karen and five children, I learned that sometimes we need ‘aha’ moments instead of how-to manuals; a story instead of a sermon; an encounter instead of a lecture.

That’s why my answer to the question, “What if a jaguar appeared in South Texas?” is saturated with parables, prayers, poems, proverbs, and prophetic words set in the voices of creation.

My wife Karen is from where this imaginary tale takes place, so I have visited it often. On one visit, I saw a 1946 black-and-white photo of what was believed to be the last jaguar in the Rio Grande Valley. Hunters gathered around their prize. The question, “What if a jaguar came back here?” struck like a match inside me and became a bonfire of discovery for six books, beginning with The Trail to the Lonely Tree.

C.S. Lewis, George MacDonald, Tolkien, Milton, and Dante are the literary mentors I have looked to for this Christian fantasy, which, in my case, is a form called “magical realism.”

It’s real in that you can visit, for example, the Port Isabel lighthouse or the Rio Grande River; it’s magical in that I have immersed that world into another one—one that isn’t “real” yet completely true. The ranches are fictitious and yet, as symbols, speak the truth to the way things are and the way things could be as wheat and weeds grow together in the realm of Man.

The descriptions of the animals and plants of the Rio Grande Valley are as accurate as I could labor to attain. For the stars, I employed the astronomy app Starry Night Enthusiast 8 to precisely describe the activity of the heavens during the time of the tale, which is from September 2016 through August 2017 in Book 1.

The herblore is a work of research too. Patch the raccoon heals a friend’s injury with aloe vera and the pita plant, while later he and ab aplomado falcon named Sent attempt to heal an ailing, abandoned child with leaves of the anacahuita (Texas wild olive); twigs of the allthorn (amargoso); and tasajillo berries of the Christmas cactus.

A word about the jaguar named Oracle. He isn’t Aslan, but he sure seems to have spent time with him. His faith journey might be like yours, with clues to the future, a heart to serve others—and profound disappointments along the way.

Let’s discover together how to begin again, own our faith, leverage our sorrows, and pick up the trail before us. For the way to our future often begins with a memory. Our destinies are found in the first things our Creator told us long ago in childhood and before. That is where we will most likely find courage for our calling.

I don’t mean ‘calling’ in the sense of clergy alone, but in the sense of living as your original self, the one God thought of when He said, “Let there be…”

My Thoughts on To Choose the Longshot

To Choose the Longshot by author Lisa M Prysock is book two in her Kentucky Debutants of the Gilded Age series. It is a Christian historical romance that is delightful. Living near Louisville, Kentucky and having had grandparents that lived in Lexington, I am familiar with the beauty and regality of Kentucky horse racing. However, this book taught me some things about it during the Gilded Age that I did not know.

This is the tale of Delia Lyndon. She is the second born child to her parents, loves horses, riding, and is expected to make a prosperous marriage. There are two suitors that have caught her eye. She now needs to decide what she really wants for her future.

I loved the faith message in this novel. It illustrated how we should all ask for guidance and discernment from God. When we pray that His will is done in our lives, things begin to become clearer to us. There were life lessons on priorities, forgiveness, grace, and family. All of the lessons were inspiring.

Since this is the second book in the series, I would recommend reading it after book one. It would make for a clearer understanding of the story, but it could be read as a standalone. This is very engaging and filled with romance, suspense, and excitement. The characters are realistic and relatable. The story was interesting and had a nice pace with no lulls.

I highly recommend this novel. It is very entertaining and will leave you with some tidbits of information you did not previously have. This gets a 4 out of 5 star rating from me. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my own thoughts.

Hello Celebrate Lit Friends and Readers! I’m back to share a looksie at Book 2 from Kentucky Debutantes of the Gilded Age. I’ve really enjoyed my deep dive into all things Kentucky Derby and the world of horseracing in To Choose the Longshot.

Most of us have heard of Churchill Downs and Lexington’s Keeneland. But before Keeneland was the Lexington Association Racetrack. The annual spring race generally opened each year on that course with a featured race known as the Phoenix Stakes. It dates as far back in history as 1831! You can take a peek at the fascinating horse names of all the winners from 1831 to 2012, here. Of course, I’ve fictionalized names of winners and many events around the races in my series, but it’s fun to peek at real-life history when crafting our stories.

Leading up to and through the Gilded Age, the time period and setting of this series, the Phoenix race was generally sponsored by the Phoenix Hotel in Lexington. And more than Kentucky horseracing history, in Book 2, readers will get to come along for a glimpse at another course located in Baltimore, Maryland when the story takes our main characters to Pimlico. They referred to this track as the Old Hilltop in the early days of American horseracing history.

And atop Pimlico sits the famed weathervane. Did you know that painting the Preakness Stakes weathervane is a grand Pimlico tradition dating to 1909? The vane style is unique, commissioned by the Maryland Jockey Club, bearing the shape of a thoroughbred and jockey ever since the original arrow-shaped one was struck down by lightning. The new vane was christened by the colors of the silks carried by that year’s winner, Effendi.

I had a great deal of fun writing To Choose the Longshot starting with the very first page. The novel opens with a runaway bride! It’s always a wonder what makes a bride runaway, and my imagination went to work at once creating the situation that causes this bride so much consternation.

Readers get to learn more about Veronica’s sister in Book 2, Miss Delaney Lyndon. Everyone calls the shy and demure middle sister, Delia. And all of Lexington expects one of the Lyndon sisters to marry into the Sullivan family, since these two families are “Kentucky horseracing royalty.” But who will Delia choose to marry? Will she marry her handsome, wealthy, and daring beau, Thaddeus Sullivan, or will a rugged newcomer and underdog in their midst from the Adirondacks, Jake Williams, turn her head?

I cannot fail to mention that the beloved character of Aunt Mae from Book 1 makes an appearance in Book 2. She certainly has her hands full attempting to help Delia reach a decision about who she should marry, knowing it will impact the future of Velvet Brooks Farm for generations to come. But if anyone can help steer Delia to a decision, it’s Aunt Mae. As our heroine grapples with perceptions and tries to balance expectations with what’s in her heart, find out what happens next with a deeper look at the world of horseracing, sure to give horse enthusiasts plenty to cheer about.

Unfit to Serve Celebrate Lit Book Tour Giveaway

Unfit to Serve is a Christian historical fiction by author Sandra Bretting. This is the first book that I have read by her, and I was pleasantly surprised. It was extremely well written and grabbed my attention early. I was captivated until the very end.

Set during World War I in 1918, this is the story of Josephine (Jo) Pembrooke. She is a school teacher living at Camp Travis in Texas while her husband has been deployed somewhere overseas. This story involves a test, “intelligence quotient test,” that the United States has just begun using for soldiers. She found it to be extremely difficult and rallies to help the soldiers pass it.

The strong believable characters, vivid descriptions, and inspirational Christian message make this book a riveting novel. I did not want to put it down. It is filled with action and emotion. The author did her research well and provided information that I did not know. It is great to learn something while reading for entertainment.

I highly recommend this phenomenal book. It would make a wonderful book club selection or gift for a fan of WWI books. It receives a 5 out of 5 star rating from me. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

Most people don’t know this, but the IQ test we’ve all heard about came to America during World War 1. French schoolteachers originally created it for their students more than a hundred years ago. Then the U.S. military found out about it, and the top brass thought they could use it to test recruits for their battle-readiness. There was only one problem: thousands of men failed it because they’d immigrated from overseas and couldn’t read the questions. They were loyal to the U.S., smart as whips, and physically capable, but they couldn’t pass a test they couldn’t read. In real life, it took the military a whole year to see the problem and come up with a better version for foreign recruits.

A whole year!

I couldn’t help but wonder what happened to those men who failed it, and how it affected their families. The recruits had come from countries devasted by famine, disease, and war, and they couldn’t go back. From there, the story evolved. I brought in a brave schoolteacher who sees the problem and struggles to fix it. Of course, being the early 1900s, women are supposed to be seen and not heard (like children) so she’s stonewalled at every turn. But she doesn’t stop. Josephine (Jo) knows that God cares about justice too, and she looks to Him for help when everything falls apart.

On a different level, I loved exploring the relationship between Jo and her stiff-lipped husband, Albigence. I purposefully moved this urban couple from a sophisticated university setting to a hot, dusty military base in San Antonio. There, they’re forced to rely on each other for the first time and fight for their marriage. It’s an unconventional love story, but a love story nonetheless.

In all my books, I strive to show how people can change for the better—or worse—depending on the situation, and that the best path forward is to trust God and His timing. He’s always perfect, even when we’re not. Thank goodness we can rely on Him!

The Wanderer Scorned is Book 1 in author Natasha Woodcraft’s series The Wanderer. This is a Biblical Fiction about Adam and Eve’s family. The relationship they each might have had with other family members is explored. It gives the author’s perspective on what might have been.

Adam and Eve’s son, Cain, is featured in this thoughtful novel. I was impressed by the author’s ideas. They were biblically sound. Her writing style is inviting and thought provoking. This book opens up an entirely new look on family dynamics.

For me, The Wanderer Scorned was a poignant read because I knew what eventually would happen. The author has included many relatable life and spiritual lessons in her book. I was invested in it and its familiar characters within the first few pages. While no one can know the actual truth of what happened, this take on it is reasonable.

If you have never read Biblical Fiction, I urge you to give it a try. Be certain to find reputable authors that use scripture as their guide. I highly recommend this thought provoking novel. Book 2 will be following it, and I eagerly await it. The Wanderer Scorned receives a 5 star rating from me. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

You’re an Author from the UK. Tell me more about that.

That’s right. I’m a Brit, which is great but has its challenges, like negotiating single quotation marks! There’s a massive lack of Christian fiction here. It’s not stocked in secular bookstores, there are few Christian bookstores left, and there aren’t many big conventions or publishers. I’m part of a team passionate about changing the landscape. We offer support services to authors and publishing services. Please pray for us and our country, and support British writers if you can.

Who do you share your home with?

My husband, Ben, and four sons ranging from 15 to 7. Plus a dog, 2 cats, 3 goats, 9 chickens and 16 quail (though they don’t all live in the house.) It can get a little crazy…

Sounds like it. How do you find time to write?

Good question. My mornings are usually taken up with feeding/cleaning kids and animals. My afternoons with working for the family business or publishing house. Before tea, I’ll be out picking vegetables and pulling weeds – we try to grow as much as we can ourselves. Writing gets squeezed into late nights, early mornings and quieter days. It’s my downtime and my favorite time spent with Jesus.

You write Bible-based fiction. What specifically?

The Wanderer Series is based on the story of Cain & Abel in Genesis 4. It came about because I woke up one morning wondering what prompted the first murder (no kidding; my brain is weird.) I’d been pondering Jesus’ words about murder and anger in the Sermon on the Mount and praying about what I should write for a while. Suddenly, I knew it had to be a reimagining of Cain’s story – from his perspective.

Hang on. From Cain’s perspective?

Yeah. Though there’s certainly a place for them, I personally dislike stories that are too simplistic. Where bad guys are really bad and good guys are really good – that kind of thing. The Bible teaches us that we all need grace (especially me), and as regards Cain – I don’t think he was much different to any of us. Writing from his perspective gave me opportunity to spend a lot of time in the Word of God, exploring Cain’s slide into sin in a way that challenged me to examine my own heart.

That’s some heavy stuff. Did you have any background that helped you tackle this story?

Sure. I have a degree in Theology, and I’ve also studied English Literature and Creative writing. Mostly though, it was a case of leaning heavily into what God wanted to teach me through this book and hoping some of that resonated with my readers. The reviews so far say it has!

What would you say to those questioning whether Bible-based fiction is right for them?

I totally understand the fear surrounding this genre. I felt it myself when I started writing and that was something I had to take to God and trust Him with. “Is it even ok to write these stories?” I asked.

Essentially though, it isn’t much different to a sermon. It’s exegesis and expansion of the scripture, just presented differently: in fiction rather than non-fiction. I’ve researched, covered my writing in prayer, and had pastors check my work. I’m super careful about handling scripture faithfully but state where the story comes from my imagination. It isn’t intended to replace the Bible. Quite the opposite – I hope it will inspire people to pick the Bible up. I even include an appendix that explains decisions I made, and study questions, at the back.

My hope and prayer is that Jesus will be glorified as lives are touched by this ancient story reimagined. If you’re still not sure, why not give The Wanderer Scorned a go? You don’t know until you try…

An Arrangement with the Heiress by author Lisa M. Prysock is a Christian Historical Romance. It is Book One in the Kentucky’s Debutantes of the Gilded Age Series. I fell in love with the lovely cover and was eager to read the story.

Kentucky’s horse country is absolutely beautiful. The author did a wonderful job taking readers back in time and to Kentucky bluegrass. The conversations sounded authentic and added depth to the delightful marriage of convenience story.

This is the tale of Veronica Lyndon, a debutante with horse racing royalty in her veins. She loves being at home on the farm and wants to help her family. A marriage of convenience has never entered her thoughts. Edward Beckett is a New Yorker who is not excited about marrying her either. This marriage is the mastermind of the couple’s fathers.

I enjoyed the author’s style of writing. She sprinkled faith throughout the book. This is important if you are writing a Christian fiction. The pace was nice and even, giving readers a chance to absorb everything. I found it easy to be invested in the lives of the characters and difficult to put the book down. There is so much to love. The humor made me giggle out loud! The twists kept me on my toes. The spiritual lessons warmed my soul. I even gleaned some knowledge about horses.

This book gets a high recommendation from me. It was delightful. A reading group would have a fun meeting discussing this story and messages. I rate it 4 out of 5 stars. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

Q & A with Lisa M. Prysock…Writing Gilded Age Kentucky Romance!

What inspired you to write An Arrangement with the Heiress?
Residing here in beautiful Kentucky near many of the world’s finest horse farms, rolling hills, and rich culture, for years, I have longed to grasp hold of the inspiration around me to pen a historical story that had been mulling around in my mind.

Hence, I reached out to a dear author friend, Chautona Havig, to brainstorm and build upon what was in my head and heart thus far. She ran a hypothetical scenario by me with some conflict arising because of hypocrisy about the horseracing world…something that could stem from some possible characters. This fit perfectly with some of my research about the Gilded Age era in the horseracing world. My immediate reaction: Ooo, yes girl, yes! Imagine squealing and much chatter at this point. We writers can get a bit on the gabby side if left to ourselves. And because, well, my hero had two sisters; ideal candidates to become antagonists. Chautona and I were chuckling and laughing…and I was off and running like a horse out of the gate.

Were there any challenges you faced about including some history from horseracing in your writing process?
Yes! For starters, how to do it all justice? How to get the feel of it onto paper without writing it wrong? There was so much that had been written about the Kentucky Derby, Keeneland, and horseracing history in general. My deep dive into the Kentucky Derby alone could have held me captive for many months in research.

Knee deep in taking notes, I landed on a thesis paper from the 1940s that was steeped with everything that had put the Kentucky Derby and horseracing in Kentucky on the map. By the time I finished wading through the thesis and all of my other research, I had gobs of notes and a goldmine of historical tidbits to bring my story to life with some degree of accuracy. My story also takes readers to Manhattan and South Carolina. Imagine me turning my laptop sideways to study ancient theater seating charts (okay, well maybe not ancient, but some theaters from the 1900s no longer exist…) and maps for street names from Gilded Age Lexington and Manhattan, and beaches on the Carolinian coastline. All my story needed now was my imagination and a tour of a local horse farm.

Tell us about your tour of a local horse farm.
Feeling a little shaky about my knowledge of horses, on an ultra-super-hot day in July of 2023, my husband—who behaved like a trooper in agreeing to escort me toward the end of getting my horse facts straight—and I, set out to drive to Lexington from our rural suburban home on the edge of Louisville.

We’d decided to make a day of it. We had a wonderful time and really enjoyed touring Gainsborough Farm. It was sweltering hot, but by the time the tour ended, despite melting from the heat before, during, and after, I felt as though I understood more about horse farming better than before the tour.

I had some knowledge of horses from growing up on a farm in Minnesota where my dad boarded horses for locals from time to time, but that had been a long time ago. I needed to brush up on the facts and try to imagine it as if I were living in the early 1900s. Unfortunately, there aren’t too many time machines around to satisfy my desire for temporary transportation to and from a working horseracing farm in 1908. My research, memories, books I’ve read, movies I’ve watched, and my own imagination would have to fill in the rest. It’s all part of being a fictional historical writer, right?

The Gamekeeper’s Reluctant Bride is a Christian historical novel. Written by author Elva Cobb Martin, this is a marriage of convenience Southern tale. It starts off with excitement and continues to be interesting until the last page.

Set outside Charleston, this is the tale of Helena Allton. She is a seventeen year old fiery young woman wanting to escape the marriage plans her father has made. It is also the story of Gideon Falconer. He is a gamekeeper at a nearby plantation and has a strong faith. Both of these characters have many layers that are revealed throughout the book. All of the characters are thoughtfully crafted. The supporting ones are lovable or dastardly. They all add to the story.

There are so many twists and turns in this book as well as romance, history, adventure, and Christian inspiration. It was easy to become invested in this novel. The pace was a bit uneven with some parts dragging and others racing. The unique use of baptize was refreshing at first, but by the third time it became redundant. I did love that the Christian message was not diluted but very present.

I definitely recommend this book. It receives a 4 star rating from me. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

In The Gamekeeper’s Reluctant Bride, I planned to develop a rich, spoiled heroine who had everything she wanted—beauty, wealth, reputation, an important Charleston family name, and even membership in a popular church of her day but who had no real relationship with Jesus Christ. Isn’t that like so many in America today with our many blessings and freedom but no real love for Christ, his written Word, or his love for the unborn and his biblical plan for marriage and gender? Yet our name may be on some church roll and we call ourselves Christian. I believe our Mighty God is calling America back to him in faith and obedience to the Bible. Gideon ducked his head at her icy voice. “Look, young woman, I dragged you from the Ashley River and walked miles carrying you in my arms, to this cottage. You were soaked through and through and unconscious.”

She interrupted him. “I don’t want to hear any more of your wild story. Go from my presence and shut the door while I dress.” She pointed to the cabin door, then reached up and touched the lump on her forehead and groaned. “Why did you strike me, sir?” These words came from between gritted teeth.

Gideon’s nostrils flared. “Miss or ma’am, whichever you are, I did not strike you. You must have hit your head on your horse’s neck or a rock when you two jumped into the Ashley. For your information, all I did was save your life, if you’d like to thank me for that.”

Here’s part of Helena’s epiphany:

Captive on the pirate ship, Helena dropped to her knees beside the bed and cried out to God. Her life paraded before her, and tears blinded her eyes. The privileged life she’d led as a wealthy planter’s daughter now seemed frivolous and meaningless. Father God, I believe Jesus Christ is Your Son you sent to save me from my sins. I repent and turn from them to You and Your Word. Please forgive me and come into my heart, be not only my Savior, but my Lord and director of my decisions, especially my vote for righteous leaders. Help me find a Bible-preaching church family and do my part in bringing America back to You. I believe You are working mightily in my life, family and nation, and I give You praise. Amen

Weaving Roots Celebrate Lit Book Tour

My Review

Weaving Roots is the first book in A Gathering of Mercies series by author Heather Wood. This is a Christian Historical Romance Fiction novel set in 1828. It is a poignant book about people, their relationships, and choices. I became easily invested in the characters and story.

This is the story of Betha, her nephew Henry, and Colm. Betha has taken on the mothering of her nephew and tries to shield him from unkind talk about her family. His father has not been very involved in Henry’s life. It has been very difficult for him.

Betha works hard taking care of her nephew and spinning flax into thread for her brother. She is a loving, caring woman that worships God. Her desire is that Henry will follow God, too. Colm is a schoolteacher and loves instructing the boys. He has ideas about new ways to teach, but is unsure of how they will be met.

The characters are believable and relatable. Some are so lovable while a few I did not care for at all. I enjoyed the author’s style of writing. It was engaging and kept my interest throughout the book. One of the things I loved was learning about the history of camp meetings, the start of Sunday Schools, and even the Lancaster method of education. Books that entertain and educate are my favorites, especially when the Christian message is mixed in like this one. At the end of the story be sure to read the author notes for more information.

I thoroughly enjoyed this heartwarming family story and romance. It has a lot of substance and provides food for thought. This would make a fabulous book club choice. I highly recommend it and give it a four star rating.

After obtaining her bachelor’s degree in Bible/Theology from Appalachian Bible College, she settled in Virginia with her husband David. Her early passions fuel her writing today, although she spends most of her days now working to infuse her love for God and good literature into the hearts of her four children.

I’ve gone through a lot of phases in my life. I’ve been involved in different hobbies and activities, only to have them fizzle out after a few years. So when I started writing, I thought it was the same thing—that it was another short-lived hobby and soon I would get back to my regular life.

My third book was about to be released when one day, it felt like God turned a light bulb on in my mind: This is what I’ve been preparing you to do all along. When I look back at my parents, my education, and the experiences of my life, I realized that God had specially equipped me to do exactly what I was doing: write Christian historical fiction about real American church history.

The epiphany was more scary than exciting. I’m a “one idea at a time” kind of author. I don’t have multiple projects going at once. I had no idea, as I went to publish my third book, if I would even be able to come up with a plot and characters for a fourth. Would I announce to my friends that this writing thing was here to stay only to find I never got another story idea? What about the sacrifices it would require of my husband and kids?

That was just in 2022. Releasing this summer is Weaving Roots, my fifth book and the first in a whole new series with entirely new characters. I’m looking forward to seeing how the rest of the series unfolds from the idea seeds God has planted! I regularly offer my writing up to God, willing to walk away if He were ever to ask me to do so. Until then, I will work diligently and trustingly at the work He has given me to do.

You see, while each book does start with an idea seed, it’s watered by real history. As I take my spark of inspiration to the history books, I delight in finding out what God was doing in the time and place I’m writing about. My plots grow up around the real people He used and the work He was doing (although I usually make people who really lived into minor characters at best. Most often, I merely refer to them off the page while using what I do know about them to inspire my characters). I always try to drop vivid characters into the world as it really existed and watch and see how they respond. I dig into Scriptures and the theologians and Christian thinkers of their era or the one before to round out my themes and take the book’s message deeper. As a result, I am always the first one who is convicted and challenged by the message God brings to my stories.

Weaving Roots introduces us to the father of the siblings in my Finding Home series when he was just ten years old in 1827. He’s a second-generation Irish immigrant in a family of linen weavers in Baltimore, more than a decade before the Irish Great Famine. To the best of my knowledge, no one in either Christian or general market fiction has written about this time, place, and people group. Not everything on the page will be what you expect, as this generation between Colonial and Civil War/ Victorian Americans was very unique in their beliefs, struggles, and priorities. Henry Young is brought to Baltimore by his father, who is looking for a fresh start for his son and himself. Henry soon finds that his new schoolmaster is not what he expects and his father has more major changes coming into his life.

“To Speak His Name” by author Tara Johnson is a Christian historical romance novel and Book One in The Wings of the Morning series. I was captivated from the very beginning of this riveting book. It pulled on my heartstrings and emotions.

I tend to shy away from books on slavery, which this one is. It is hard for me to understand the abhorrent way most slaves were treated. While the story did not gloss over the horrific things that were done, it did not go into excruciating detail. This book grabbed my attention from page one and absolutely refused to let me go.

Avalina was a wee child when she was stolen from her home in Ireland. Tragic circumstances turned her into a mute. She is a beautiful young girl with a sweet, kind spirit. However, she is stranded and marked as a slave on the island of Barbados.

Josiah Holland is the son of a South Carolina plantation owner. His father deals in crops and the sale of slaves. Josiah has been away at school and no longer agrees with his father on many things, especially the treatment or sale of slaves. He and Avalina meet when he travels to Barbados with his father for business with Avalina’s master. The connection they make is immediate and powerful. They are drawn to each other.

Tara Johnson has a fabulous style of writing. Her story flows like a river taking readers on a ride to a time and place faraway. There are many twists, turns, surprises, bumps, and smooth patches in this saga. Characters are finely crafted, believable, and engaging. They grow and mature in body and spirit. The Christian message is present even throughout trials and perilous times. Life lessons abound in this tale that will make readers ponder it long after they have finished the book.

I highly recommend this phenomenal book. It would be great for a book club to delve into. There is so much to discuss. Any historical romance fiction lover will devour it. I gladly rate it 5 out of 5 stars. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

Barbados Sweet Bread Recipe

INGREDIENTS

³⁄₄cup brown sugar
¹⁄₃cup shortening (or coconut oil)
¹⁄₃cup butter
2cups flour
1pinch salt
2 ¹⁄₄cups grated coconut
¹⁄₄cup raisins, chopped
¹⁄₄cup dried cherries, chopped
1tablespoon grated nutmeg
1tablespoon almond extract
1 ¹⁄₃cups evaporated milk
3tablespoons water
1tablespoon butter (for pan)
2tablespoons turbinado sugar

DIRECTIONS

Preheat the oven to 350*F and lightly grease a bread pan. The original recipe calls for 2 bread pans, but the bread doesn’t rise at all so it bakes nicely in one pan.
In a mixer cream together the brown sugar, shortening and butter.
Add flour, salt, grated coconut, raisins, cherries, nutmeg and mix well.
Stir in almond extract, evaporated milk, and water, until a firm dough is formed. (You may need to add additional water.).
Split the dough evenly between the two pans, and use a knife to cut a diagonal criss-cross pattern on the top of each loaf. Sprinkle 1 tbsp turbinado sugar over the top of each loaf.
Bake for about 1 hour, until a skewer inserted into the center of the loaves comes out clean (Or a digital thermometer reads 190*F.) Cool completely in the pans before removing.

The Story Behind To Speak His Name

Who doesn’t love a toe-curling romance? I confess, when I began writing my upcoming story To Speak His Name, romance was the farthest thing from my mind.

This novel was prompted by two unique nuggets. First, I have always been fascinated with how those who have never heard of Jesus come to a saving knowledge of Him. How does the Holy Spirit reveal such marvelous truths to a soul who knows nothing of the spiritual world?

I began meditating on Psalm 19: 1-3: “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.” At the same time, I picked up a small nonfiction book about the Irish slave trade, and what I learned was astonishing.

The Irish slave trade began when King James II sold 30,000 Irish prisoners as slaves to the New World. From 1641 to 1652, over 500,000 Irish were killed by the English and another 300,000 were sold as slaves. Ireland’s population fell from about 1,500,000 to 600,000 in one single decade. Families were ripped apart and 52,000 Irish (mostly women and children) were sold to Barbados and neighboring islands.

My imagination quickly took flight. I pictured a young Irish girl named Avalina, stolen away from her home, shipwrecked and found wandering on a sandy beach in Barbados.

Oh, one other thing…Avalina is mute.

She is taken in by a cruel man and forced to work as a slave on his plantation, surrounded by strange people in a strange world who are steeped in polytheism and superstition. The years pass and, with her voice locked away in silence, she wonders if there isn’t something more to life than mere existence.

Enter Josiah Holland.

I never conceived having the son of a slave trader as my hero, but once I wrote the first scene with Josiah, I knew he would be the one to set Avalina’s heart on a path toward freedom. Just as the famed hymnist and former slave trader John Newton found redemption in the arms of Jesus, so Josiah turns away from the world he knows to embrace a broken woman and an uncertain future.

Is Josiah perfect? No. He struggles to please his demanding family. He grapples with his motives and his stained past, yet he is beautifully vulnerable.

When I finished penning the final scene, it hit me: Josiah is a picture of Christ. He redeems Avalina and carries her from the Land of Darkness into a kingdom of Light. He shows her kindness and compassion when all others treat her with disdain. What a lovely picture of grace.
