The Beginner’s Quilt Book Review

The Beginner’s Quilt by talented wordsmith Wanda Brunstetter is a fascinating modern Christian Amish tale. I was riveted to this amazing story from the beginning. The Beginner’s Quilt is a prequel to Brunstetter’s highly popular Half-Stitched Amish Quilters Club series. It may be read as a stand alone or before you dive into the Half-Stitched series.

This is the story of Emma Bontrager, a shy young Amish maedel. She travels to Arthur, Illinois to spend the summer with her maternal grandparents. Emma has no interest in cooking or sewing. She would much rather be outside. Her grandmother is tasked with teaching her how to cook and sew.

This is such a good book. There are many Christian and life lessons tucked inside the entertaining story. The writing is exquisite. It draws readers into the characters’ lives and stories. Characters are carefully crafted. Each one is unique and lovable. Emma’s grandparents were two of my favorites.

The dialog sounded authentic. There are a few twists and turns to keep readers guessing. This is a wonderful book that can be shared with a book club or quilting circle. Even a group of friends would enjoy reading and discussing it. In the back is recipe from the story so that you may make it, too.

I highly recommend this beautiful story. It receives a 5 star rating from me. A complimentary copy was provided by the publisher, but these are my honest words.

Convict’s Courtship Celebrate Lit Book Tour

Convict’s Courtship by author KyLee Woodley is a Christian historical novel. This is the third installment in the Outlaw Hearts series. It would be best to read the first two books before this one, but this could be read as a stand alone.

Set in the mining town of Virginia City, this is the story of Clara Alexander. She is a young woman who wants to become a journalist. After finishing school, Clara returns home and hopes to repair her strained relationship with her father while pursuing her dream of writing. Beau Vulpe is a reformed convict. He works in the mine and helped Clara, which threw them together.

The writing is excellent. Author Woodley mixes romance, suspense, and intrigue to keep her story moving at a good pace. There are twists and turns to keep readers on their toes. The Christian message is beautiful. Historical details will please history buffs, and all readers will be able to glean some information. The family drama is heavy and interesting.

I highly recommend this book. It is an enjoyable read with themes of grace, perseverance, and second chances. There is a lot to dissect and discuss if reading groups want to grab this for a club selection.

It earns a 4 star rating from me. I received a complimentary copy from Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

A HEART IN EXILE: A BEHIND-THE-SCENES LOOK AT THE HEROINE

We all carry “wounds”—those hurts from our past that shape how we see the world today. For Clara, my heroine in The Convict’s Courtship, that wound is deep, and it’s personal.

In her youth, Clara loved to write fanciful stories. With a love of history and a strong faith in God, she strove as a teen to write Bible studies for young ladies. But she comes from a troubled home, the daughter of an impulsive father and a mother she believes died of a broken heart after her father’s betrayal. Weeks after her mother’s death, her father married his mistress, who gave birth to a baby boy just months later. At this point, a sixteen-year-old Clara hoped they might finally be a family, only to be sent away to an elite boarding school—Miss Porter’s School. This was the same prestigious school attended by Nellie Grant, President Grant’s daughter. Everyone said her father sent her there out of love, but Clara knew better.

IT WAS TIME FOR CLARA TO GROW UP.

During her time in the East, she discovered the pioneering work of 19th-century female journalists and activists like Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Jane Swisshelm, and Anne Newport Royall. She admired these strong women, seeing them as a stark contrast to her mother’s perceived weakness. This shift led Clara away from “fanciful” notions of hope toward a life built on facts, proof, and logic—so much so that rather than pray, she now seeks guidance through the analytical study of the Bible.

AFTER FOUR YEARS OF EXILE, CLARA RETURNS TO A VIRGINIA CITY THAT IS SOON DECIMATED BY THE GREAT FIRE OF 1875.

Now, she must find a way to reconcile her mother’s memory, her own search for significance, and her desire for a family. It is among the ruins of the city and of her family that she encounters Monsieur Beau Vulpe—a convict on the run with deep wounds of his own and a secret connection to her family that makes her the last woman in the world he would choose to love. Will the mysterious Frenchman be part of her healing or her final ruin?

Clara’s journey is one of healing, hard truths, and finding hope in the midst of the ashes. Have you ever had to face a “wound” from your past that felt impossible to heal? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. And if you’re ready to see how Clara and Beau’s story unfolds, you’ll want to read The Convict’s Courtship.

Plain Jane’s Secret Admirer Celebrate Lit Tour

Plain Jane’s Secret Admirer by author Anne Blackburne is a Christian Amish novel. This is Book Eleven in The Heart of the Amish series. This is a sweet romance that is nice to read.

It is the tale of Jane Bontrager and her secret admirer. He leaves her thoughtful gifts and letters to express his affection. Jane and her friends are taking care of Lizzie’s bakery and cat while she is on her honeymoon trip.

I enjoyed the author’s writing style. I was immediately interested in the story and found it easy to follow. Characters are relatable and lovable. The cats in the story are mischievous and provide some chuckles. The bakery scenes are authentic and extremely well written. I could almost smell the Amish Cinnamon Rolls and fresh coffee.

There are some twists and turns, mystery, danger, and Christian lessons. I love the way the Amish help each other and forgive. Those are lessons for everyone. I highly recommend this lovely book. It gets a 5 star rating from me. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

Her idea of the perfect vacation is cruising and seeing amazing new places with people she loves.

More from Anne

The amazing bloggers who work with Celebrate Lit are going to do a blog tour for my brand new book in Barbour’s “Heart of the Amish” series, “Plain Jane’s Secret Admirer”!

Jane’s story is available now to readers in print and online wherever fine books are sold, and I feel so blessed to have the help of the Celebrate Lit folks in launching this next tale from my made-up Amish community of Willow Creek, Ohio.

If you read any of my previous three Heart of the Amish books in the series, “Ruth’s Gingersnap Surprise”, “Mary’s Calico Hope”, and “Lizzie’s Little Mouse”, you’ll remember Jane Bontrager, their good friend who lives and works with Lizzie in her New Orleans Style French/Amish bakery in Willow Creek. Jane was also mentioned in Ruth’s story as one of the lucky recipients of a kitten from their elderly friend, Lydia’s, cat’s final litter.

Jane’s cat is a tabby named Secret, because she can tell her fluffy pal all of the wishes, hopes and dreams closest to her heart.

As the story opens, Jane is waving her brother John and Lizzie off on their wedding trip, promising to take good care of the bakery – and Lizzie’s precious cat, Little Mouse – while they are away.

But then Jane finds a mysterious note from someone claiming to be her secret admirer taped to the back door of the bakery, and her heart flutters, wondering if it could possibly be her long time crush, Samuel Mast, the buggy maker, who put it there, along with a whimsical little gift.

Between a water leak that damages ceilings in the bakery building and the sudden disappearance of both Secret and Little Mouse, Jane has no time to wonder who left the note and gift; she needs help!

And Samuel Mast, who is indeed her secret admirer, is ready to step up to the plate and do whatever it takes to help Jane find the cats, repair the bakery, and maybe even discover love along the way.

But Sam has a secret of his own. He’s the one who accidentally-on-purpose saddled her with the nickname “Plain Jane” when they were kids. He has no idea how to confess his mistake, or his love.

Will Jane and Sam be able to get past Sam’s terrible secret? And will they find the missing cats before Lizzie gets home? Don’t lose hope; with God, everything is possible!

Thank you for taking the time to learn about Jane’s story! This book is my fourth in Barbour Publishing’s series, “The Heart of the Amish”. Look for other great reads in the series from authors Mindy Steele, Kelly Irvin and Lisa Jones Baker.

I’m currently writing my fifth book in the series, which will feature a young woman you’ve met in some of my other stories, Miriam Zook. Miriam is a talented artist who paints stylized folk art paintings depicting scenes from Amish life.

Just like her friends, Miriam received a kitten from Lydia; a black and white fellow named Beauregard, or Beau for short. Her story, “Miriam’s Little Gentleman”, is due out in May, 2026.

I hope you’re having as much fun reading about these remarkable young women – and their kitties! – as I’m having writing about them. Thanks for being part of our journey!

As for me and mine, we are all well and enjoying a crisp winter in southeast Ohio.

God bless you and yours!

Joyfully,

Anne Blackburne

The Red Cottage Celebrate Lit Tour

The Red Cottage by talented wordsmith Hannah Linder is a masterpiece! This Christian, historical, mystery, romance novel is full of twists and surprises. From the beginning, I was captivated by the poignant story and its eccentric cast of characters. I was fascinated by the intricacies of this emotionally charged tale.

This is the story of Meg Foxcroft and Tom McGwen. Their love story is far from perfect, but delightful nonetheless. It begins with stolen nights aboard a small boat star gazing. Tom is gentle, kind, and humble. His deep love for Meg is palpable. It is reciprocated even though her uncle does not approve. They only want to marry, build a little cottage, paint it red, and begin a new life together. However, as happens often, life throws them a devastating surprise and their paths change.

The writing is exquisite. Characters are carefully crafted and become our friends. The author takes readers on a journey to a time and place that opens our imagination. Her pace is smooth and steady. The Christian message is simply beautiful as well as the life lessons.

I highly recommend this exquisite novel. It would be a delight for a reader group. There is so much to discuss. It gets a 5 out of 5 star rating. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

More from Hannah

We’re made for someone. I think I’ve always believed this—that it was never about proximity, or happenchance, or who you know, or where you are.

But that God, in His infinite wisdom, created a second half for each of us.

Someone who fits in the curve of your neck when you hug.

Who laughs at the things you laugh at.

Who speaks to you in a language your soul understands.

I think that’s why I love The Red Cottage so much. Circumstances would have never mattered with Tom and Meg. They loved each other. They were linked. And even if everything had been different, if they had been born hundreds of years before, they would have found their way back to each other.

If the age was ancient Egypt, and he had been a Pharaoh, and she a slave, they would have discovered each other.

If the year was 1920, and he a factory worker, and she the daughter of an oil tycoon, they would have defied the rules of society.

In any other place, in any other time, in any other way, Tom would have loved Meg. And Meg would have loved Tom. That is the beauty and the mind-blowing magic of real love.

So, when you fall into the pages of The Red Cottage, I hope you aren’t so foolish as to imagine this was an accident. That Tom said the right things, or that Meg felt vulnerable in just the right places, and that their bond—both the first and second time—was a mere hapless stroke of luck.

They would have loved each other anyway.

We’re all made for someone.

The Amish Ballerina Book Review

The Amish Ballerina by granddaughter and grandmother authors Richelle Brunstetter and Wanda Brunstetter is a Christian contemporary Amish book. It is not part of any series and is a standalone novel. It has the most unique storyline of any Amish book that I have ever read.

This is the story of Arie Kauffman, an Amish young woman. She helps her parents at home and in their store. Her English friend, Lorrina Moore, has secretly been teaching ballet lessons for years. Arie has kept this knowledge from everyone, including her family and boyfriend, Edwin Chupp. She practices in the loft of the barn away from everyone.

There are a lot of characters in this novel. Most of them seem to be disgruntled for one reason or another. Even Arie gets gloomy at times. There were a lot of side stories going on to keep straight.

I was not certain how the authors would integrate ballet dancing into an Amish novel. They did in a plausible way, and I was impressed. Their descriptive words whisked me away to that Amish barn where I envisioned Arie gracefully twirling and leaping to an unheard melody. There are some twists and turns in the story. A few are predictable while others are not.

There are many life and spiritual lessons woven intricately into this tale. Honoring parents, forgiveness, faith, love, trusting God are just a few. Overall I found it to be an entertaining and enjoyable read. I would recommend it to Amish readers for something different from the normal Amish book. It gets a 4 out of 5 star rating from this reader. A complementary copy was provided by Barbour Publishing, but these are my honest words.

About the Authors:

Wanda Brunstetter is an award-winning romance novelist who has led millions of readers to lose their heart in the Amish life. She is the author of over 100 books with more than 12 million copies sold. Many of her books have landed on the top bestseller lists, including the New York Times, USA Today, Publisher’s Weekly, CBA, ECPA, and CBD. Wanda is considered one of the founders of the Amish fiction genre, and her work has been covered by national publications, including Time Magazine and USA Today.

Wanda’s fascination with the Amish culture developed when she met her husband, Richard, who grew up in a Mennonite church, and whose family has a Pennsylvania Dutch heritage. Meeting her new Mennonite sister-in-laws caused Wanda to yearn for the simpler life. In their travels, she and her husband have become close friends with many Amish people across America. Wanda’s desire to explore their culture increased when she discovered that her great-great grandparents were part of the Anabaptist faith.

All of Wanda’s novels are based on personal research intended to accurately portray the Amish way of life. Many of her books are well-read and trusted by the Amish, who credit her for giving readers a deeper understanding of the people and their customs.

Wanda’s primary attraction to the Amish is their desire to live a devout Christian life that strives to honor God, work hard, and maintain close family ties. Whenever she visits her Amish friends, Wanda finds herself drawn to their peaceful lifestyle, sincerity, and close family ties, which is in stark contrast to the chaos and busyness that plagues so many modern “Englishers.” Time and time again, Wanda loses her heart in the Amish life, and she hopes her readers will, too. Richelle Brunstetter lives in the Pacific Northwest and developed a desire to write when she took creative writing in high school. After enrolling in college classes, her overall experience enticed her to become a writer, and she wants to implement what she’s learned into her stories. Just starting her writing career, her first published story appears in The Beloved Christmas Quilt beside her grandmother, Wanda E. Brunstetter, and her mother, Jean.

Rescued Heart, The Story of Sarah Celebrate Lit Tour.

Rescued Heart, The Story of Sarah, by the amazing wordsmith Angela Hunt is one of the best Biblical fiction books I have read. Author Hunt did extensive research and has given readers a plausible detailed account of what could have been Sarah’s life. I was captivated throughout the entire book.

I love Biblical fiction if it is done well. This one truly is. It stays true to scripture. The characters come alive on the pages. Their daily life was extremely interesting. I loved how faithful Abraham was to God. He was gentle and loving as he taught Sarah.

There were many twists and turns in this novel. A lot of them explained how things might have happened in the biblical account. The explanations made perfect sense.

At the end of the story is a section titled “Author’s Notes.” In it she explain where she researched and why she wrote the story way she did. It is a must read. I was fascinated by it.

This is a fabulous book. It would be a great book for any reading club or as a gift. It receives a 5 out of 5 star rating from me. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

More from Angela

Can you please provide a brief summary of your novel Rescued Heart?

Rescued Heart is the story of Sarah—taken from Scripture and another ancient manuscript, the Book of Jasher. Scripture tells us relatively little about the first matriarch of our family, so this novel explores more of what her life might have been like.

What drew you to write about Sarah as the first subject in your new MATRIARCHS series?

I have been writing biblical historical fiction for a few years now, and I had yet to go back this far in history. It’s a challenge to find authentic history about the bronze age, but when you can find something, it’s fascinating.

How did you research daily life in ancient Mesopotamia and the nomadic existence Sarah would have experienced?

As I mentioned above, I used the Book of Jasher to fill in many of the details that Scripture does not give us. Jasher does not claim to be inspired Scripture, but it does give us ideas about what daily life in that age could have been like.

Sarah faces many difficult situations in her journey, including barrenness in a culture that deeply valued fertility. How did you approach writing about her emotional struggles?

Writing about infertility was easy for me, as my husband and I personally experienced it— though not nearly as long as Sarah did. I simply took what I knew and multiplied it by decades of years.

The relationship between Sarah and Abraham spans decades. What challenges did you face in portraying their evolving relationship over such a long period?

A marriage, like any relationship, goes through seasons—the honeymoon phase, the getting to-know you phase (especially in an arranged marriage), as well as various struggles regarding finances and leadership. Sarah put up with a lot—Abraham’s lies about their relationship, for one thing, and Sarah’s twice ending up in harems of foreign kings—yet they remained committed to each other.

How did you balance staying true to the biblical account while creating a full narrative with dialogue and interior thoughts?

Whenever I write in this genre, I aspire to 1) never contradict the biblical record, 2) never contradict the historical record, and 3) fill in the rest with what fits with what we can know about society, environment, governments, and technology at that time. The rest is emotional, because human nature does not change.

Sarah is often remembered for her laughter when told she would bear a son in her old age. How did you interpret this pivotal moment in her story?

Wouldn’t you laugh if someone told you—at ninety—that in a year you’d be nursing your own baby? I would! Sarah was not only old, but she had also been through menopause, so she thought of herself as a dried husk, no longer a woman. No wonder she laughed.

What surprising insights about Sarah did you discover during your research and writing process?

I don’t know if I “discovered” this, but I portrayed her as a woman who trusted in God through her husband. After all, Abraham was the one who talked to God, saw Him, prayed to Him—Sarah simply believed in her husband, who believed in God. But when God told Abraham to sacrifice Sarah’s beloved son, she had a real crisis of faith, and Jewish tradition holds that the shock of that realization was what resulted in her death. If you examine Scripture, you’ll see that Abraham and Isaac left Beersheba, where the family had been living, and went to Mount Moriah for the sacrifice . . . but Sarah doesn’t die in Beersheba, where she must have been living, but at Mamre, where Abraham had built an altar. And that’s all I can say without spoiling the ending of the book.

What do you hope readers take away from Rescued Heart?

That our relationship with God must be personal, not secondhand.

What are you working on next?

I am currently writing Righteous Heart, the story of Rebekah. Loving the research.

Hunting for a Husband Book Review and Giveaway Celebrate Lit

Hunting for a Husband by author Mindy Steele is an Amish Christian romance. This is book nine in The Heart of the Amish series. It may easily be read as a stand alone. This is both a nice story and very unique.

The characters are believable and relatable. Their words sounded authentic. One of my favorite ones was Mammi Iolene. She was feisty and offered some inspiration to the tale. The writing was smooth and allowed the story to progress at a nice pace. There is a bit of mystery as well as some sweet romance. The author has a surprise or two, also.

This is the story of Leah and Joe. He was in a car accident and is still harboring bitterness about it. He is struggling with his relationship with God. Leah just wants to find someone to love, and she is certain that she won’t. As their friendship goes so does their relation ship with God. This beautiful story is full of Christian and life lessons.

It would make a nice book club selection. There is a lot of material to discuss. I highly recommend Hunting for a Husband. It gets a 5 star rating from me. I thoroughly enjoyed. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

The Story Behind the Story

I love thinking outside the box and crafting a story filled with originality as well as taking the common trope and hijacking it to suit my own reading interest. Thankfully readers do too as they continue buying my books. However, none of what I create is mine to claim, as God continues to spark my imagination in the ordinary every day. Hunting for a Husband started with a chance encounter, a few God winks, and ended with lots of research on my part.

Long story short, my husband was commissioned to work on an all-terrain vehicle for a Mennonite gentleman who was disabled. His condition didn’t allow him to drive a vehicle, and his livelihood was quite unique. This gentleman owned and operated an outdoor shop with archery being the center of the focus. Before this book was released he sold the business, but the echoes of his many years remain.

I had the opportunity to meet him. He was funny, informative, and had a beautiful wife and family. I never crossed over to asking his story. It’s his story after all, but everything about the encounters struck a chord in my writer’s brain.

Fast forward a year when I came across an article about deer breeding farms. Don’t ask. You have to be married to an avid hunter to understand why some things pique my interest. And we do have a few deer farms locally. Discovering one of the most well-known deer farms belongs to an Amish gentleman surprised even me.Again, all these little bits collected in my head. It wasn’t until I learned of an Amish man who aligned bows and was an avid hunter that I realized I needed to stop sitting on these thoughts and start writing them.

Thus, the Wickey deer farm was born. This story took me across four state lines, a short novella, and a very detailed and informative conversation with a surgeon!

The Wickey deer farm was first introduced to readers in Leaving Lancaster, a short novella in A Lancaster Amish Christmas. Readers fell in love with the three Wickey sisters, and though the plot twist appealed to readers, Leah deserved to find the same love as her sisters. She wasted so many years on the wrong man. Joe Shetler, after years of accepting his future was set by one boyhood mistake, needed to learn that God is the Author of our lives.

I hope you smile, laugh, and find yourself immersed within these pages of second chances, leaps of faith, and the power of friendship and family.

Angel from the East CelebrateLit Tour and Giveaway

Angel From the East by author Barbara A. Curtis is the first book in the Blooms of the Bitterbrush series. This is a Christian historical romance novel set in 1897 Idaho with a mystery. I was immediately invested in the story from the first page.

This is the story of Eliza. As she travels from the East to California, she stops in Idaho to see her grandparents’ ranch, the Double E. They left it to Eliza after they died. When she arrives at the ranch, she discovers it neglected, in need of repair, and a dusty mess.

The author did a wonderful job with crafting her characters. They are realistic and true to the time and location. The majority are lovable and kind, but there are a few that are downright mean. I loved the Christian messages and faith aspect of the story.

I highly recommend this beautiful story. It held my attention from beginning. I learned about bitterbrush, tried to solve a mystery, and made friends with a bunch of new characters. It gets a 5 star rating from me. I received a complimentary copy from CelebrateLit, but these are my honest words.

Though he’s drawn to her compassion, he fears she may never see beyond his supposed wrongdoings, unless he can prove his innocence and reclaim his honor.

Eliza Roberts is a teacher, not a rancher. If only the man her grandfather advised her to trust wasn’t refusing to help her.

When an offer of courtship arises from the current foreman, Eliza sees the practicality in the offer. So why does her heart keep wandering back to Caleb? And why can’t she shake the feeling that something’s not right at the Double E Ranch? More from Barbara

Though Elizabeth Rose Roberts, the matriarch of the Double E Ranch, has passed before the Blooms of the Bitterbrush series begins, each story reflects the legacy she left for the generations to come. May the journey of these four descendants be an encouragement to your heart as you follow the struggles, love, and joy of Elizabeth’s family through the years.

In Angel from the East, Nellie loves baking pies and had a special request from one of the little Billings girls.

“I love pie! I hope it’s pum-kin tomorrow!” Virginia shouted.

Hopefully, Nellie had prior experience making a pumpkin pie or possessed a later recipe with detailed instructions, as this early recipe from an 1876 cookbook might not have helped much:

Peel and cut your pumpkin into small pieces and put into a kettle with a very little water; cook from six to eight hours, stirring frequently to prevent burning. When done, rub through a colander. One quart of pumpkin, five pints of rich milk, four eggs, three cups of sugar, one scant teaspoon of ginger and 4 tsp of cinnamon.

I hope you enjoy the stories—and perhaps a piece of pumpkin pie to go with them!

Blessings!

CAPTURE THE MOMENT CELEBRATE LIT TOUR

Capture the Moment by the amazing wordsmith Suzanne Woods Fisher is a must read. This contemporary Christian novel starts a new series about National Parks. It is so interesting and entertaining.

Set in the magnificent Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, this is the story of Kate Cunningham and Grant Cooper. It is a story full of adventure and the beautiful outdoors. The writing is excellent and made me want to see majesty of mountains. There are more than one storyline and multiple characters. That made for a fun read. I loved that it had a Christian message woven in.

I highly recommend Capture the Moment. Photographers especially will enjoy it. In fact, it made me want to be a wildlife photographer. It gets a well earned 5 star rating from me. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit but these are my own, true words.

A Spark that Lit a Story

By Suzanne Woods Fisher

Capture the Moment (Revell—May 6, 2025)

Inspiration can strike in the most unexpected places—like a gift shop in Grand Teton National Park. While browsing, I struck up a conversation with a college student who had never set foot outside Alabama until her mom dropped her off for a summer job in the park. One minute, she was home in the Deep South; the next, she was surrounded by towering peaks and moose crossings. Talk about a culture shock.

That conversation lit a spark that eventually became my National Parks Summers series. I couldn’t stop thinking about the fascinating mix of people who work seasonally in national parks. You’ve got fresh-faced college kids on their first big adventure, retirees finally living their bucket-list dreams, and everyone in between. These parks aren’t just natural wonders—they’re crossroads for people from all walks of life, all chasing something unique.

In Capture the Moment, I wanted to explore what happens when people and landscapes collide. Kate Cunningham, a determined zoo photographer, swaps enclosures for the wilds of Grand Teton, chasing an elusive bear and her own sense of purpose. Along the way, Kate meets Grant Cooper, a rugged park ranger with a knack for tracking and a talent for keeping her on her toes.

National parks are more than just beautiful backdrops—they’re places where people find themselves, lose themselves, and sometimes stumble into something extraordinary.

Maybe even love.

Seven Brides for Seven Texans Celebrate Lit Book Tour

Seven Brides for Seven Texans is a fantastic collection of Christian historical western romance novellas. Each brother has his own story detailing his search for a bride in this exquisite group about the Hart brothers. Various authors penned each tale yet they all were finely woven together. This was a great book!

Opening the book is the explanation for the brothers’s search for brides. I began to fall in love with each of the uniquely named cowboy from there. Every brother was carefully crafted with unique characteristics and traits, but all of them were handsome, hardworking, strong, and kind.

The writing was very well done. Humor, serious scenes, twists and turns, and the Christian faith sprinkled throughout each story made this an interesting book. The conversations were realistic and true to the time period. I learned a little bit of Texas history from this book. From the first chapter I was invested in this tale and its larger than life characters.

I highly recommend Seven Brides for Seven Texans. A reading group would enjoy this sweet, clean book with all of its swoon-worthy men. It gets a 5 star rating from me. A complimentary copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

More from Erica

Hi, I’m Erica Vetsch, and I loved collaborating on the stories for the 7 Brides for 7 Texans collection. It was fun writing stories that were so intertwined, and working closely with the other authors in the collection to bring the whole concept together.

Initially, I was approached by a publisher, asking if I would be interested in heading up a novella collection loosely based on the idea of 7 Brides for 7 Brothers, the classic musical. The parameters were that the stories must be no longer than 25K words, be historical in setting, and that I could choose the overall concept, as well as my team of authors.

I, of course, jumped at the chance. Before I contacted anyone, I worked up a rough idea of the premise of the stories. A wealthy Texas rancher with seven strapping sons is tired of waiting for them to get married and provide him with grandchildren, so he issues an ultimatum. Get married by the end of the calendar year, or you’re disinherited.

I named all the sons after famous Texans, and gave them a birth order, then I began contacting writing friends to see if they were interested in joining the project. Everyone I asked said yes!

Then the real fun began. We formed a private Facebook group, and as the characters were chosen by the various authors, the order of the stories in the collection formed, and as ideas for storylines poured in, I began creating what we came to call The Master Document.

In the MD we tracked main characters’ names and appearances, secondary characters, a map of the fictional town of Hartsville, TX, and more. It eventually ran to more than 20 pages of information. We named the town newspaper, the general store, and kept track of the layout of the Harts’ massive ranch house. Keeping these details all in one place made it easy for the authors to flesh out their story world in a way that was consistent with everyone else’s stories.

Because the stories are so closely tied and on such a tight timeline, each of the authors’ characters would appear in another author’s novella. We needed to respect each other’s visions for the characters and treat them with respect, while also having the freedom to write our own stories.

Early on, as the project coordinator, it was established that if a dispute arose between two authors on how something should go, it would be myself who would cast the final vote. However, that contingency never came into play, as all the authors worked so well together.

One of the most challenging aspects of the project was, that as the project lead, and the one writing the final story in the collection, I needed to know the most about all the stories. Just before the deadline to turn our stories into the publisher, each author sent their story along to me to read for continuity. I spent a long weekend at author Gabrielle Meyer’s house, and we read every novella aloud, making notes for consistency and continuity throughout. These notes were turned in to the project editor, and she used them in her editing process to make sure seven separate stories felt cohesive.

It truly was a fun—and to me—unique, project, and when the publisher asked if I would like to head up a follow up collection, I was eager to say yes, and thus 7 Brides for 7 Texas Rangers was born.

Both of these intertwined collections went out of print, but they are now being released once more, this time through Wild Heart Books. I’m thrilled that we can tell our stories to new readers and prolong the lives of these characters.
