An Uncharted Dream by author Abbey Downey is the third book in the Adventurous Hearts series. This is the first book in the series. I haven’t read the first two, but I was still able to follow the storyline just fine. It is a Christian historical adventure romance that is captivating.

This tells the story of Leonora Thornton, daughter of an explorer and adventurer. She has always wanted to follow in her father’s footsteps. However, after his tragic death, she finds herself afraid and not able to actually go because of fear. She meets a fellow explorer who promises to take her to where her father died, and she is determines to go with him.

Marcus is her forever friend from childhood. He cares for Leonora and wants to help her accomplish her goal. They both decide to go on this next exploration. Marcus wants to watch over Leonora and ensure her safety.

The writing is beautiful in this book. Characters are designed carefully and given much consideration. Details and dialogue are authentic for the time and place. The life and Christian messages shine brightly and offer much food for thought. I enjoyed this even paced romance that has a mystery as well as a faith thread throughout it all. This book and the others in the series can be read as a stand alone.

I highly recommend this great book. It gets a 5 out of 5 star rating from me. I received a complimentary copy of it from Celebrate Lit, and these are my honest opinions.

Have you ever doubted God’s faithfulness toward you? That He could take a tough circumstance and make anything good come out of it?

As with all my books, An Uncharted Dream is filled with romance and fascinating real history. I had the best time writing the love story between lifelong friends Marcus and Leonora. And the research into archeology, exploration, and surveying in the early 1900s was so interesting. You can get a peek into that in my author’s note.

However, I also wrote An Uncharted Dream while struggling with the kind of doubts I mentioned above in my own life. I was fighting to understand how God’s loving plan for me could include so much heartache that quite honestly still seems to have no end in sight. I know I’m not alone. Many of us grapple with questions like this every day and it’s so tough.

Leonora also faces these questions. Just when there might be a chance for romance with her best friend and her dream of going on an archeological expedition is within her grasp, she faces an obstacle that makes her doubt God’s goodness in her life. Like us, she has to come to grips with the reality that following Christ doesn’t mean things automatically go smoothly. Even for His faithful followers, God doesn’t always work out a difficult situation with a tidy happy ending. Often, we’re left to learn to lean on Him as we go straight through the worst of that situation, instead.

It’s not easy, I know that just as well as many of you. And while I don’t know why it has to be that way, I can tell you that God’s faithfulness is constant. He doesn’t love us any less when He lets us remain in a struggle. This story is just that—a work of fiction. But I hope you’ll go through this journey with Marcus and Leonora and be encouraged. I hope you’ll see the unwavering truth of God’s Word and His character. And I hope you’ll be uplifted by the moments of joy and success these characters find in their hardship and see those same kinds of blessings in your life.

The Reverend’s Second Chance Celebrate Lit Tour

The Reverend’s Second Chance, by author Lauralyn Keller, is book one in the Second Chances in Harmony Springs series. This is a wonderful story. I was captivated by the story and characters from the very beginning.

Lydia Jefferson is the school teacher in Harmony Springs. She is a widow living in a small house with her loving mother-in-law. A passionate teacher, she loves all of her students. Samuel Allen is the new minister in town. He has a mysterious past with Lydia.

The lessons is this book are powerful. Readers will see forgiveness, charity, love, gossip, jealousy, and friendship. The writing is exquisite. Descriptions took me to 1888’s Montana territory. I felt like I was there as I read about sickness, church, neighbors, and daily life. It was a rough time. Author Keller did a great job crafting her characters. Their conversations and descriptions were authentic for the setting.

I highly recommend this riveting tale. It gets a 5 star rating from me. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

Baking is one of my favorite activities. I find it relaxing, and it’s so fun trying new recipes. You might have noticed that there are generally some kind of dish or treat in my stories that characters really like. For Lydia Jefferson in The Reverend’s Second Chance, that treat is a cookie called cinnamon jumbles. It plays a part in her love story with Samuel Allen, the new pastor for Harmony Springs.

I asked ChatGPT how to make the best cinnamon jumbles. Here’s what it came up with.

Cinnamon jumbles are such a cozy, nostalgic treat! They’re chewy cookies with the perfect balance of cinnamon sugar, and they’re pretty easy to make. Here’s a recipe that will give you soft, chewy cinnamon jumbles with a nice little crunch on the outside.

Best Cinnamon Jumbles Recipe

INGREDIENTS:

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 tbsp ground cinnamon
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
1/4 cup granulated sugar (for rolling)
1 tbsp ground cinnamon (for rolling)

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and 1 tablespoon of cinnamon. Set aside.
Cream Butter and Sugars: In a large mixing bowl, beat together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy (about 2-3 minutes). You can use a hand mixer or stand mixer for this step.
Add Wet Ingredients: Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until fully combined.
Add Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture. Mix just until combined. Don’t overmix—this will keep your cookies tender.
Roll the Dough: In a small bowl, combine 1/4 cup granulated sugar and 1 tablespoon cinnamon for rolling. Scoop out tablespoon-sized portions of dough and roll them into balls. Then roll each ball in the cinnamon-sugar mixture until evenly coated.
Bake: Place the dough balls on the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Flatten each ball slightly with the back of a spoon or your fingers. Bake for about 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are golden and the centers are set.
Cool: Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Tips:

Softness: For softer cookies, don’t overbake them. The cookies will continue to cook a little as they cool on the baking sheet.
Storage: Store the cookies in an airtight container to keep them fresh. They should stay soft for about 3-4 days.

CAPTURE THE MOMENT CELEBRATE LIT TOUR

Capture the Moment by the amazing wordsmith Suzanne Woods Fisher is a must read. This contemporary Christian novel starts a new series about National Parks. It is so interesting and entertaining.

Set in the magnificent Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, this is the story of Kate Cunningham and Grant Cooper. It is a story full of adventure and the beautiful outdoors. The writing is excellent and made me want to see majesty of mountains. There are more than one storyline and multiple characters. That made for a fun read. I loved that it had a Christian message woven in.

I highly recommend Capture the Moment. Photographers especially will enjoy it. In fact, it made me want to be a wildlife photographer. It gets a well earned 5 star rating from me. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit but these are my own, true words.

Seven Brides for Seven Texans Celebrate Lit Book Tour

Seven Brides for Seven Texans is a fantastic collection of Christian historical western romance novellas. Each brother has his own story detailing his search for a bride in this exquisite group about the Hart brothers. Various authors penned each tale yet they all were finely woven together. This was a great book!

Opening the book is the explanation for the brothers’s search for brides. I began to fall in love with each of the uniquely named cowboy from there. Every brother was carefully crafted with unique characteristics and traits, but all of them were handsome, hardworking, strong, and kind.

The writing was very well done. Humor, serious scenes, twists and turns, and the Christian faith sprinkled throughout each story made this an interesting book. The conversations were realistic and true to the time period. I learned a little bit of Texas history from this book. From the first chapter I was invested in this tale and its larger than life characters.

I highly recommend Seven Brides for Seven Texans. A reading group would enjoy this sweet, clean book with all of its swoon-worthy men. It gets a 5 star rating from me. A complimentary copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

Hi, I’m Erica Vetsch, and I loved collaborating on the stories for the 7 Brides for 7 Texans collection. It was fun writing stories that were so intertwined, and working closely with the other authors in the collection to bring the whole concept together.

Initially, I was approached by a publisher, asking if I would be interested in heading up a novella collection loosely based on the idea of 7 Brides for 7 Brothers, the classic musical. The parameters were that the stories must be no longer than 25K words, be historical in setting, and that I could choose the overall concept, as well as my team of authors.

I, of course, jumped at the chance. Before I contacted anyone, I worked up a rough idea of the premise of the stories. A wealthy Texas rancher with seven strapping sons is tired of waiting for them to get married and provide him with grandchildren, so he issues an ultimatum. Get married by the end of the calendar year, or you’re disinherited.

I named all the sons after famous Texans, and gave them a birth order, then I began contacting writing friends to see if they were interested in joining the project. Everyone I asked said yes!

Then the real fun began. We formed a private Facebook group, and as the characters were chosen by the various authors, the order of the stories in the collection formed, and as ideas for storylines poured in, I began creating what we came to call The Master Document.

In the MD we tracked main characters’ names and appearances, secondary characters, a map of the fictional town of Hartsville, TX, and more. It eventually ran to more than 20 pages of information. We named the town newspaper, the general store, and kept track of the layout of the Harts’ massive ranch house. Keeping these details all in one place made it easy for the authors to flesh out their story world in a way that was consistent with everyone else’s stories.

Because the stories are so closely tied and on such a tight timeline, each of the authors’ characters would appear in another author’s novella. We needed to respect each other’s visions for the characters and treat them with respect, while also having the freedom to write our own stories.

Early on, as the project coordinator, it was established that if a dispute arose between two authors on how something should go, it would be myself who would cast the final vote. However, that contingency never came into play, as all the authors worked so well together.

One of the most challenging aspects of the project was, that as the project lead, and the one writing the final story in the collection, I needed to know the most about all the stories. Just before the deadline to turn our stories into the publisher, each author sent their story along to me to read for continuity. I spent a long weekend at author Gabrielle Meyer’s house, and we read every novella aloud, making notes for consistency and continuity throughout. These notes were turned in to the project editor, and she used them in her editing process to make sure seven separate stories felt cohesive.

It truly was a fun—and to me—unique, project, and when the publisher asked if I would like to head up a follow up collection, I was eager to say yes, and thus 7 Brides for 7 Texas Rangers was born.

Both of these intertwined collections went out of print, but they are now being released once more, this time through Wild Heart Books. I’m thrilled that we can tell our stories to new readers and prolong the lives of these characters.

The Herbalist Celebrate Lit Book Tour

The Herbalist by author Carole Brown is Book 8 in An Appleton WV Romantic Mystery Series. Do not be concerned if you have not read any of the other books in the series. This book is a great standalone read. It is a fabulous Christian fiction book.

This is the story of Lana Taylor. She is a single mother of twins and takes care of her mother, too. Lana is also an herbalist and makes herbal remedies to help people. It is also the story of Athan Meadows. Like Lana, he is a single parent. They both moved to Appleton, West Virginia because it seemed like a nice place to raise children. Then something happened and Lana is accused of a terrible crime.

I enjoyed the writer’s style. She told the story smoothly and had me captivated within the first few pages. Faith and God were woven seamlessly into the story. The dialogue sounded realistic. I loved the characters. They were easy to identify with. Each one was carefully crafted and played an important part in the story.

I found twists and turns as well as surprises throughout this story. It went at a smooth pace and was easy to read. I loved trying to solve the mystery.

This was a wonderful book that I highly recommend. It would make a great book club discussion or one to read by yourself. I rate it 5 out of 5 stars. A complimentary copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

Besides being a member and active participant of many writing groups, Carole Brown enjoys mentoring beginning writers. An author of twenty-one fiction books and two short stories in an anthology, she loves to weave suspense and tough topics into her books, along with a touch of romance and whimsy, and is always on the lookout for outstanding titles and catchy ideas. An award-winning, best seller author, she has a degree in Religious Education and an Associate in Computer, along with other course degrees. She has a special love for animals—especially dogs, cats, elephants and horses (which is sometimes found in her books)—a love for flowers and plants, traveling and her husband who is her best go-to person for grounding her in her writing.

When I started this series (The Appleton, WV Romantic Mysteries) I didn’t realize that I would, someday in the future, be writing Book Eight. Truly, this series is one of my readers’ favorites with many of them asking when the next book is coming out.

When I plotted The Herbalist, I knew the basic outline of how the story would go, but I didn’t realize all the technical details I would need to research, even though most of it, in the book, isn’t indepth.

Car items: fuel pumps, oil leakages, failing brakes.

Dementia: mental stability, actions, progression, and more.

Police procedures: The various actions from a police crew when there’s a murder, the people who examine bodies, the leniency that can or can not be used in a murder case.

and other items I studied. It was both fascinating and tedious, but necessary.

But I love research, so most times I enjoy it, especially when it comes to my books.

I wanted to create an interesting and catching story that was as real as I could make it. Though the major plot scene was planned, at times, I would be stuck, wondering what should happen next. And lying in bed at night is sometimes my best time to think of the a scene and how to write it. I love it when this happens, because it’s the perfect idea for my book. So I jump from my bed to scribble down the thought at my desk.

“The Bible Companion Book 1 Genesis–Exodus: Journey through Scripture One Day at a Time” by author Karen Westbrook Moderow is a wonderful Bible help tool. It is great for individual or group use. I loved reading it.

This is well thought and well written to help better understand and study scriptures. It is easy to understand and explains many confusing things from scripture. Each chapter points out the main point along with life lessons from particular scripture readings. Whether you are a seasoned Bible reader or just beginning, this companion will add a lot to your study time.

The writing is easy to understand and like having a teacher beside you. There is so much information to glean from this edifying book. I love the questions that provide food for thought.Karen Moderow,

A Father-Daughter Legacy: The Bible Companion Series
In 1993, my father, Pastor Floyd Westbrook challenged a group of men and women from his weekly Bible study to join him in reading the Bible from cover to cover. He found if he wrote short daily lessons for each chapter, people stayed engaged and were transformed by the Scripture they read. His work, though enjoyed by hundreds, was never widely published.
I shared his passion for making God’s word accessible to people who found it hard to understand parts of the Bible, couldn’t keep up with the schedule, or couldn’t relate Scripture to their journey. Later, after I completed degrees in theology and creative writing, we realized combining storytelling with his format could help people overcome the most common barriers to Bible reading. “Mary the Missionary, A Kenyan Adventure” by author Yvonne M Morgan is a Christian Children’s book. It is wonderfully illustrated by talented artist, Jack Foster. The pictures will draw children in and keep their interest while reading this delightful story.

This is the story of a young girl named Mary. She goes on a mission trip with her parents to Kenya. It is an eye opening experience for her as she gets to see first-hand how some other people live. She witnesses people living in mud huts, eating the intestines of goats, and women trying to balance buckets of water on their heads as they carry them from the river.

Children will love this engaging story as they learn lessons in acceptance, diversity, and the importance of helping others. This story will open the door to discussions about faith and how God loves all of us. Adults will be able to use this book as a teaching tool. It is a great book for school or school libraries, as well as for home.

In Kenya, Ugali is used as a fork to pick up their food. Ugali Recipe to try with your children:

Ingredients:

1 cup maize meal / corn meal

2 cups normal water

Instructions:

Heat water over medium heat in a deep pan. Make sure you use a pan with a handle.

Add the maize meal or cornmeal and keep on stirring with a strong wooden spoon.

Keep stirring and pressing the mixture against the sides of the pan to break up the lumps.

As the mixture becomes thicker, it becomes more difficult to mix but keep mixing and breaking up the lumps.

The mixture with begin to come away from the sides of the pan.

Allow it to cook for 2-3 minutes.

At this point transfer the ugali to a platter. Place the plate over the pan and turn it upside down.

Or you can transfer to a small heatproof bowl. Pat it down into shape. Place a plate over the bowl and turn it over.

Enjoy piping hot ugali with your favorite stew or curry.

Lizzie’s Little Mouse

Lizzie’s Little Mouse by author Anne Blackburne is a Contemporary Christian Amish Cozy Mystery Tale. It is the eighth book in The Heart of the Amish Series by various authors. These books may be read as a series since they share many characters or as stand alone books.

This is the tale of Lizzie Miller. Her dream has been to open a unique bakery. When she does, strange things begin to happen. It is a fun mystery to read and solve for everyone.

I really like the author’s style of writing. It is inviting and very interesting. I was invested in the characters and their lives from the first page. There are many twists and turns tucked in this sweet story. Mystery lovers will enjoy this and even those readers who do not normally read Amish books will, too. The cat, Little Mouse, is adorable. After the story and epilogue, there is a recipe from the tale along with some baking tips.

This is a wonderful read. It gets a 4 out of 5 star rating from me. A complimentary copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

If you read either of my previous two books in the series, “Ruth’s Gingersnap Surprise” and “Mary’s Calico Hope”, you’ll remember Elizabeth Miller, their sassy friend with the darling Haflinger pony named Goldie who gave Mary a ride one morning before church services. Elizabeth, or Lizzie, was also mentioned in Ruth’s story as one of the lucky recipients of a kitten from their elderly friend, Lydia’s, cat’s final litter.

Lizzie’s cat is a gray kitty she named Petit Souris, which is French for Little Mouse. Why Little Mouse? Because as a tiny kitten, the darling reminded Lizzie of a mouse!

And why the French name? Well, our heroine is not your typical Amish miss. After attending a wedding in New Orleans as a teen and tasting the amazing baked goods for which the city is renowned, Lizzie began dreaming of opening her very own New Orleans style French bakery – in Ohio’s Amish country!

She loves everything to do with New Orleans, and learned to speak their dialect of French while doing an internship in a bakery there when she was 18. Upon returning home she went to work at the local bakery to learn more about the business, and to save up for her dreams.

As the story opens, we find that Lizzie’s dream has come true! It’s opening day of The Plain Beignet, Lizzie’s bakery in Willow Creek, Ohio. Everyone comes out to wish her well, including friends you’ll recognize from my first two books!

But when something unexpected and frightening happens during the grand opening, it becomes apparent that not everyone is as happy as Lizzie and her friends about her success.

Along with some help from her pals, and her best friend Jane’s handsome big brother, John, Lizzie will get to the bottom of the mystery of who wants to put her out of business, and why!

Land of Dreams Celebrate Lit Tour

Land of Dreams is the first book in the Home to Green Creek Series by authors Lauraine Snelling with Kiersti Giron. This is a Christian historical novel about a young Norwegian woman immigrant, Amalia Gunderson. I was captivated by the story and loved it!

Set in late 1880’s, a group from Norway board a ship and head to America to make a new life. Tragedy strikes and many families are affected. Amalia is on that boat, and her life is forever changed.

The writing in this novel is exquisite. It swept me away to 1889, carried me on ship to the New World, and gave me so many emotions. It is evident the authors did extensive research by the details. Conversations were authentic, the characters were expertly crafted, and I learned a lot by reading this poignant tale.

I appreciated the life and Christian messages tucked in the story. There was one particular character that was unhappy and made life miserable for those she encounters. Don’t we all know someone like that?

I highly recommend this beautiful novel. It would make a wonderful reading club choice. There are discussion questions in the back to help facilitate the chat. I give it a 5 out of 5 star rating. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

Different stories come about different ways. One of the things I’ve learned through these years of writing is the value of slowly waking up and paying attention to what was going on in my mind. I saw a young woman standing at the railing of a ship tossing on rough seas. A gray day. And I heard the splash as her father’s body sank into the waves. I sniffed, mopped my eyes and settled back, hopefully to sleep awhile longer. But the dream, if that was what it was, continued. A little girl named Rut, or Ruthie, joined Amalia at the rail, slipped her hand into the young woman’s and asked if she could please come, her mother wanted to see her. And my internal game of what if continued for these people on a cholera attacked ship from Norway to Amerika.

I knew a new story had begun but had no idea where it was going. As I said, I treasure that time between sleeping and waking when I can part the curtains to my subconscious mind and see what it has been playing with. What a gift God has created in us.

Around about the same time, something brought a story that one of my aunts on my father’s side told me when I asked her what she remembered of her growing up years. Auntie Harriet chuckled and asked, “Have you heard of the rutabaga years?” I shook my head and settled in to listen. They were a family of eleven children, my dad being the eldest, they lived in a big two story house with a huge garden, a flock of chickens and bad weather. Late spring freeze, early fall freeze and much of the produce killed off. All but the root crops, and rows of rutabagas. Many were dug and stored in the cellar, lots left in the ground, to be dug up later. Rutabagas can be fried, boiled, mashed, grated, turned into soup and stew, mixed with other vegetables, added to pancakes, even turned into pie. Ah, yes, the rutabaga years, Auntie Harriet said she didn’t particularly care for rutabagas for a long time after that. But in the mean time, they became part of Amalia and Ruthie’s new life at a big house Ruthie inherited in Green Creek. North and West of Decorah Iowa in 1819. The Daughter of Rome Celebrate Lit Book Tour

The Daughter of Rome is book three in phenomenal wordsmith, Angela Hunt’s biblical series The Emissaries. Book One is The Woman from Lydia and The Sisters of Corinth is Book Two. Both books were excellent biblical fiction novels. Even though this is the third installment, it may easily be read as a stand alone book. Readers of the series will be thrilled to see past characters reappear in this book.

This book is set in Ancient Rome during the time of Nero’s rule. The author has obviously done extensive research to ensure accuracy in her writing. Her book is captivating. Within the first few pages I was invested in the story and characters. I enjoyed reading the details about life in Rome. My heart broke for some of the martyred followers.

The conversations sounded authentic and added so much to the story. Characters were uniquely designed and came alive under the author’s deft pen. I learned about the great fire and other things. It is so nice to read books that teach me things.

This is the story of Calandra and Hadrian. She is unmarried and lives with her widowed father. He is a sculptor, and she assists him. Hadrian is a kind, compassionate young man whose father is a member of the senate. Sparks fly when they meet each other.

This is an amazing book that not only entertains, but also inspires. There are man life and Christian lessons tucked into this brilliant novel. It gives readers a good look at life during Nero’s reign.

I highly recommend this stunning book. It is riveting and emotional. Reading groups would benefit from choosing this as a selection. There is much to discuss. It gets a 5 out of 5 star rating from me. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

Thank you for joining me on this blog tour for THE DAUGHTER OF ROME, book three in the Emissaries series. The book stands alone, but it includes characters from books one and two, so people who have read those books will have a fuller understanding of who those people are. But no worries! If you haven’t read the first two books, you’ll still have no problem reading THE DAUGHTER OF ROME.

When I shaped the idea for this series, I had just finished The Jerusalem Road books, which centered on Jews who lived during Jesus’ life and ministry. I wanted to keep writing in this time period, so I shifted my focus from the Jews to the Gentiles—specifically, the people who came to faith through Paul’s ministry.

The first book in the series, THE WOMAN FROM LYDIA, is concerned with the seller of purple who hosted the Philippian church in her home. The second book, THE SISTERS OF CORINTH, features two competing sisters who lived, naturally, in Corinth. And the third book, THE DAUGHTER OF ROME, is about a young sculptress who lives in Rome during the time of Nero.

I have been fascinated by this time period ever since reading THE SILVER CHALICE and THE ROBE in my childhood. What would it have been like, I wondered, to live in a time when you could be executed simply for saying you believed in Jesus? Americans don’t really know what that’s like, but people in other parts of the world still deal with that danger today. The Bible tells us that this kind of danger is not going away—it will be prevalent during the end times as well. So I wanted to explore the world of the ancient Romans, and hoped to pull some lessons from it that will apply to us today.

I’ve also been amazed at what we can still see of ancient Greek and Roman art—how did they sculpt those massive statues? One such work, the Colossus, was so large it stood in the harbor and ships reportedly entered beneath it!

THE DAUGHTER OF ROME features one other fascinating element—a question that garners as much debate as “who killed JFK?” The story takes place during the time that the Great Fire of Rome nearly leveled the entire city, and to this day, no one is certain how it began. The people blamed Nero, Nero blamed the Christians, and it may have been a kid illegally cooking his dinner at the racetrack.
