Trail of Promises Celebrate Lit Book Tour

Trail of Promises is book two in author Susan F. Craft’s the Great Wagon Road Series. This historical Christian romance is poignant wagon adventure from New York to South Carolina. I was invested within the first few pages.

Set in 1753, this is the story of Tessa Harris and Stephen Griffith. Unexpected circumstances have placed them together in this suspenseful adventurous tale. There are many dangerous things awaiting them as they traverse the wagon trail. The author researched well.

Filled with bits of history, this is an exciting pre-revolutionary marriage of convenience novel. The author has crafted two Christian characters that work well together. They encourage and support each other well. God’s plan and help is nicely included in the storyline.

I highly recommend this captivating book. It will keep you flipping pages to see what happens next. Be sure to read the Author’s Notes. I rate it 4 out of 5 stars. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit but these are my honest thoughts.

About the Book

Book: Trail of Promises

Author: Susan F. Craft

Genre: Christian Historical Romance

Release date: June 25, 2024

A marriage of convenience will protect her reputation on the long trail ahead, but he’s barely more than a stranger…

Tessa Harris is a woman without options. When she’s stranded nearly two hundred miles from her destination, her only companions are a former British Cavalry officer and his two young brothers. Society dictates they cannot travel without a chaperone, but can she trust this handsome stranger to protect her if they choose to marry? And if so, should she show her feelings or guard her heart? She’s learned the hard way how painful it is to love a man who doesn’t reciprocate.

Stephen Griffith has enough responsibility caring for his young brothers, and now he shoulders the massive responsibility of keeping his new wife safe as they cross the wilderness toward a new life. And though he tries to keep her at arm’s length, reminding himself their marriage may only be a temporary arrangement, he cannot seem to shake the feelings growing for her.

When they fall into the hands of outlaws, Tessa and Stephen must overcome their hardest obstacle yet. Only God can bring them safely to the end of the trail where enduring love awaits.

More from Susan

Tessa Harris and her father, Thomas, are portrait artists, limners, who travel from town to town seeking commissions.

Limners were among the first to record glimpses of life in colonial America. By the early 1700s, wealthy colonists hired limners to paint portraits of their families. These limners, mostly self-taught, generally unknown by name, turned out naive portraits in the Elizabethan style, the Dutch baroque style, or the English baroque court style, depending upon the European background of both artist and patron.

Rather than a true portrait, the paintings were most often idealistic and did not give a true representation of the personality of the sitter and were often two dimensional. Artists focused on the material wealth of the subject, giving much attention to their clothing and accessories. Some artists painted only the faces of their subjects, explaining that they need not bother with tedious sittings and that they would paint the bodies and clothing later. They would show their subjects English and French prints from which to choose whatever costumes and backgrounds they preferred.

Like most artisans of their time who found it difficult to support themselves with paintings only, limners also worked in pewter, silver, glass, or textiles or took jobs doing ornamental paintings of clocks, furniture, signs, and carriages. Many painted miniatures—tiny watercolor portraits—on pieces of ivory, often oval-shaped and commonly worn as jewelry. Limners also painted on paper and canvas and earned, on average, $15 per portrait.

Limners Samuel McIntire and Duncan Phyfe became celebrated painters of furniture. Famous colonial portrait artists included Joseph Blackburn, Peter Pelham, John Smibert, John Singleton Copley, John Trumbull and Charles Wilson Peale. An American artist, Benjamin West, became painter to the king and president of the Royal Academy in London. American artists flocked to his studio to learn under his tutelage, including Gilbert Stuart, who painted a famous portrait of George Washington.

In 1754 in British colonial New York, an artist took out the following ad in the Gazette and the Weekly PostLawrence Kilburn, Limner, just arrived from London with Capt. Miller, hereby acquaints all Gentlemen and Ladies inclined to favour him in having their pictures drawn, that he don’t doubt of pleasing them in taking a true Likeness, and finishing the Drapery in a proper Manner, as also in the Choice of Attitudes, suitable to each Person’s Age and Sex, and giving agreeable Satisfaction, as he has heretofore done to Gentlemen and Ladies in London. He may at present be apply’d to at his Lodgings, at Mr. Bogart’s near the New Printing-Office in Beaver-Street.

I pray that my Great Wagon Road series honors the Lord and the gifts He has given me and that you will love my characters as much as I do. Soli Deo Gloria.

12 Ways to Age Gracefully Celebrate Lit Tour

12 Ways to Age Gracefully: How to Look and Feel Younger by author Susan U. Neal, RN, MBA, MHS, is a Nonfiction, Christian Living, Health book. The author emphasizes faith and inspiration in her advice. I really appreciated that. She offers practical tips and counsel on a multitude of things in a clear manner.

Covering topics of eating right, exercising, brain health, hormones, stress, physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental health, and life balance, there is something for everyone in this educational book. The author has included science for more in depth information. Her style is open, upfront, and easy to understand.

There is a lot of information to absorb in the healthy book. It needs to be read slowly. Concluding each chapter are summary, life application, and personal reflection questions. The author suggests scripture memorization and prayer, which I agree with very much. Her advocation of Christian yoga gave me pause. I have never heard of that. It sounds like an oxymoron to me.

Overall, I enjoyed the author’s thoughts and gleaned useful information. I would recommend this book. Mature women would benefit most from reading it, but younger ones may want to take a look at what’s ahead for them. It gets a 4 out of 5 star rating from me. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

Mary’s Calico Hope Celebrate Lit Tour

Mary’s Calico Hope by author Anne Blackburne is Book 5 in The Heart of the Amish Series. The Contemporary Amish series is written by multiple authors. Each book may be read as a standalone or together in the series.

This is the story of Mary Yoder. She is unmarried, twenty-nine, and has mobility issues due to a childhood accident. Rueben King is the new doctor in town. He is Mennonite. When he meets Mary sparks begin to fly.

The author has done a great job creating believable characters. Mary has a cheery attitude despite her situation. She lives alone with her calico kitten and has found a way to be independent and live alone. The doctor being Mennonite allowed for comparison between them and the Amish. I enjoyed this storyline and learned a lot while reading this captivating tale.

The Christian messages tucked inside this interesting story are wonderful. The life lessons are as well. If you are an animal or cat person, the escapades of Hope, Mary’s cat, will make you smile. There is so much to like in this novel.

I highly recommend this book to all lovers of Amish fiction. Expect some twists and turns to keep you on your toes. This book receives a 5 out of 5 star rating from this reader. A copy was provided, but these are my honest words.

She is truly happy at twenty-nine, but. . .she wouldn’t mind finding a husband—if the Lord wills it. Along comes Reuben King, a Mennonite doctor. They are attracted to one another, but how could they ever be together? She’s a baptized Amish woman, so it seems impossible. Also, he wants her to have surgery to improve her mobility and lessen her day-to-day pain. She’s sick and tired of surgeries! But if God wills it, she’ll do it. More from Anne

Hello from Southeastern Ohio, where the sun is shining and it’s good to be alive!

Less than a year ago I wrote a kick-off post for the launch of my debut novel, Ruth’s Ginger Snap Surprise, which was also featured in a Celebrate Lit Book Tour in December 2023.

As a green newbie, I didn’t really understand what this meant, but I was (and am!) very happy for any help with my writing career. Well, the amazing bloggers who work with Celebrate Lit did a bang-up job promoting my book, and it is doing very well. So thanks to all of them, and to all who have read Ruth’s story!

Now, here I am again! I can hardly believe that my second book, Mary’s Calico Hope, is published and available to readers, and that once again I’m blessed to have the help of the Celebrate Lit folks in launching my book.

Mary Yoder will be familiar to anyone who read my first book. She appears several times in that story; you may remember her as the quiet young woman with a great attitude despite the fact that she has been using crutches to get around since a childhood accident injured her spine and legs.

Mary is the heroine of my second book, Mary’s Calico Hope. In fact, Mary is something of a heroine to me. I love her joy in living and her faith that God will get her through any challenge, even if she can’t begin to see how He’s going to do it.

We all face challenges, and would all benefit from a little more faith, and not just when times get tough, am I right?

I am so happy to bring you Mary’s story and can’t wait for you to experience her happy-ever-after. (Which of course is guaranteed, since we’re talking about a romance novel!) But how will she get there? Ah, that’s the question!

Thank you for taking the time to learn about Mary’s story! This book is my second in Barbour Publishing’s new series, “The Heart of the Amish”. It’s actually the fifth book in that series, which also contains great reads from authors Mindy Steele and Lisa Baker Jones.

I’m currently writing my third book in the series, which will feature a young woman you met in both Ruth and Mary’s stories, Elizabeth Miller. Look for Lizzie’s Little Mouse next winter.

Oh! I forgot to mention, each of my heroine’s received a tiny kitten from an elderly friend, Lydia Coblentz. Ruth had Ginger Snap. Mary has her calico kitten, Hope. And Lizzie’s kitten is a little gray one that reminds her of—you guessed it! A mouse!

I hope you’re having as much fun reading about these remarkable young women—and their kitties! —as I’m having writing about them. Thanks for being part of our journey! Without you, it wouldn’t be possible.

As for me and mine, we are all well and enjoying spring in southeast Ohio. In other words, enjoying the sunshine, but carrying a sweater and an umbrella, just in case!

God bless you and yours!

Joyfully,

Anne Blackburne

The Sisters of Corinth Celebrate Lit Tour

The Sisters of Corinth by extraordinary wordsmith Angela Hunt is Book Two in her series The Emissaries. This Biblical Fiction series is set in New Testament times. The Sisters of Corinth can easily be read as a stand alone even though it is the second book.

Everything about this book is captivating, beginning with the cover. It is hauntingly beautiful. This is the story of stepsisters Prima and Mariana. Reminiscent of Cinderella, one is loving and kind, while the other is self-centered and cruel. One sister worships Jeshua, and the other one worships the pagan gods of Rome.

Characters are beautifully crafted with precision and finesse. I was immediately engaged with them and their story. The exceptional care given to details took me out of modern times and placed me in 60 AD Corinth. The danger to Christians was real, and I could feel it. The author wove an exciting story that pulled on my heartstrings. There were many twists and turns.

The author has done a remarkable job with this brilliant tale. It made me uncomfortable in places where the temples to the pagan gods were mentioned or certain things were done. No details were given just insinuated. Even though I know those things happened, I hate thinking about that evil.

I adore the author’s style of writing and her love for Jesus. Her book is captivating and flows smoothly like a river. It was well researched and all things sounded authentic. She included a beautiful inspirational lesson. The spiritual messages to trust God in all things and that He loves us shine brightly throughout the entire book. I really enjoyed reading this book.

After the story there are author notes, reading group questions, author information, upcoming book notes, and references. Before the story begins is an Introduction section. Be sure to read this information. I highly recommend this book to lovers of Biblical Fiction. It would be perfect for a reading group. I rate it 5 out of 5 stars. A copy was provided by CelebrateLit, but these are my honest words.

About the Book

Book: The Sisters of Corinth (The Emissaries: Book 2)

Author: Angela Hunt

Genre: Biblical Fiction

Release date: May 21, 2024

“Angela Hunt takes her craft to new heights–and depths–as she fully immerses us in the lives and struggles of first-century followers of Yeshua.”–Tamera Alexander, bestselling author on The Woman from Lydia

When the new provincial governor arrives in Corinth, the esteemed Chief Magistrate Narkis Ligus, father to Mariana and Prima, is delighted. He sees a golden opportunity to propel himself to greater power and fortune by uniting his and the governor’s households through the marriage of one of his beautiful unwed daughters to the governor’s firstborn son.

Yet complications quickly arise in Narkis’s own family. Mariana, his stepdaughter, holds steadfast faith in Yeshua, rendering her hesitant to marry a man devoted to the Roman gods, despite Narkis’s urging. On the other hand, Prima, his daughter by birth, yearns for a life of wealth and status and is willing to go to great lengths to secure a marriage that fulfills her desires–even if it means betraying Mariana to do so.

More from Angela

Hello!

Thank you for helping me kick off the book tour for THE SISTERS OF CORINTH. This book is the second in my Emissaries series, but don’t worry—it reads like a stand alone.

The series features Gentiles who became believers in Christ through the ministry of Paul. The first book was about the woman called Lydia who lived in Philippi, and this book is about two step-sisters who lived in Corinth, the “Vegas” of the Roman Empire. What happened in Corinth stayed in Corinth, if you get my meaning, and there was a LOT going on in that pagan city.

I couldn’t help but think of Cinderella’s story as I wrote the opening of this book. The novel begins when the two sisters hear about the new governor coming to Corinth. He has a handsome and eligible son, and Narkis, the head of their family, is determined that one of his daughters should marry him. Prima is like her father, power-hungry and pretentious, while quiet Mariana is a believer in Yeshua. There’s a great deal of primping and preparing, scheming and scowling as the banquet draws near, and you’ll never guess which daughter the young man chooses—or maybe you will.

I hope you enjoy THE SISTERS OF CORINTH and thank you so much for taking part in this book tour. I am so grateful!

Always,

Angela Hunt

Secrets of the Wildflowers CelebrateLit Tour

Secrets of the Wildflowers by author Sarah Talbert is a Young Adult Christian historical Biblical fiction. The cover drew me it it immediately. However, it took me multiple times to read this book. I would start it, lose interest, and put it down. Finally, I was determined to finish it and did.

This is the story of Miu. She lives in the time of many false, pagan gods in Mesopotamia. Her life is hard, but she wants to rise above her adversity. At one point she meets Abram from the Bible. Miu’s father is a hard man especially to his family.

The author has great knowledge of the people, places, society, and pagan temples. Even though this is a work of fiction, I do not like reading about idol worshiping and all that it entails. The author does not go into depth about many of those details.

Characters were nicely crafted. The plot was well thought. The author’s writing style was even and easy to follow. I enjoyed the last of the book much more than the beginning. There are life and spiritual lessons illustrated in this book.

Secrets of the Wildflowers would be a great book for a YA readers. I am a grandmother, which I think is why I had issues. There is information about ancient land and culture to be gleaned as well as the sweet journey to the One true God. It gets 4 out of 5 star rating from me. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

About the Book

Inspired by the resilient wildflowers that thrive against all odds, Miu is driven to forge her own path and create a name for herself.

Secrets of the Wildflowers: Comparing the Ancient Near Eastern Gods with Yahweh

In the ancient civilizations of the Near East, people had a fascinating relationship with their gods. They earnestly sought the blessings of the gods, such as prosperity, reputation, and fertility, but the interactions were often unpredictable. Prayers and offerings were done with a sense of expectation, but people were always aware of the capricious whims of the gods.

When examining the relationship between humans, the gods of the Ancient Near East, and Yahweh, there are two key points to consider:

-Fragile Relationships with the Gods:

Did you know that in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt, people believed that the gods held power over every aspect of their lives? They turned to their gods for blessings and protection, whether it was for a great harvest or a happy family.

The main reason behind writing “Secrets of the Wildflowers” was to compare and contrast the gods of Miu’s time (the main character) with Yahweh. Miu faces difficulty dealing with the unpredictable nature of the gods while also desiring to pursue her own path, but also needing the blessings of the gods.

-Yahweh’s Guidance and Certainty:

Enter Yahweh, the God of Abram, who presented an unmistakable difference from the uncertain association between humans and the gods in the Ancient Near East. Instead of leaving humanity to figure out the fickle nature of the gods’ goodwill on their own, Yahweh intervened in a significant manner.

Miu eventually discovers that Yahweh wants a relationship with her. He has pursued her from the beginning of the story. She just needs to learn if she wants to bloom free like a wildflower, or if she wants to follow him.

By following Yahweh’s laws, Abram and his people found peace, prosperity, and a divine relationship with God. Obeying His commands blessed them with divine favor and the assurance of His presence.

In conclusion, Miu and everyone she encounters must come face to face with a god who is unlike anything they’ve ever heard of. After losing and redefining freedom, Miu discovers that true freedom is found in working together with others and utilizing her God-given skills within a relationship with a loving God.

The Girl from the Hidden Forest

The Girl from the Hidden Forest by author Hannah Linder is a Christian historical fiction. I was first mesmerized by the haunting cover. It is a captivating novel that had me invested from the very start.

This is the story of Eliza. She has lived in the hidden forest for many years. Suddenly she meets Felton Northwood, a headstrong young man on a quest. Their lives contain a deep mystery. Eliza is a sweet young woman. She loves her faithful dog, Merrylad, and her forest. Felton is not afraid of danger or taking a risk. He is a strong, faithful hero.

I enjoyed the author’s style of writing very much. The mystery was brilliant. A multitude of twists and turns were placed throughout the book. The romance was magnetic. Lessons were included on fear, strength, hope, faith, goodness, and the power of prayer through the characters’ actions.

The author has done a remarkable job spinning this tale, which is reminiscent of a fairytale of sorts. Characters were expertly designed. It was easy to become engaged with them. They made me laugh and cry. My emotions were all over the realm reading this story. Villains were downright dastardly. Others were lovely and like old friends. The descriptions whisked me away to a time and place far away.

I highly recommend this book to romantic historical fiction lovers and mystery lovers. It is amazing. I had trouble putting it down. This is definitely a must-read! It receives a 5 out of 5 star rating from me. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

But at least she is safe from the cruel world outside, a world Captain has warned her against and protected her from.

That is, until a handsome stranger named Felton Northwood invades her quiet forest and steals her away. Why does he tell such lies? Why does he insist that her name is Miss Eliza Gillingham, daughter of a viscount, who disappeared fourteen years ago after the murder of her own mother? A murder Eliza is said to have witnessed.

When Felton returns Eliza to Monbury Manor and reunites her with a man who is told to be her father, all she remembers are the strange nightmares that have plagued her since childhood. Why have they suddenly grown worse? Are the answers hidden inside her own mind?

More from Hannah

Everyone has been asking me for years: “Can you see yourself in any of your characters?” I guess I’m in everything, interwoven in all of the sentences. Pieces of me are scattered in the settings. Traits and quirks and secret thoughts are dispersed into the minds and souls of my characters. But I always felt the need to say no. I don’t see myself in my characters.

Perhaps because, in the past, so many of my heroines have been so different than me. Ella Pemberton (Beneath His Silence)—outlandish and stubborn and daring, apt to speak her mind, bold in her manner and flawless in her dance. Nan Duncan (When Tomorrow Came)—injured and worrisome, voice like an angel, childishly sweet, yet too eager to please. Isabella Gresham (Garden of the Midnights)—spoiled and excitable, with raven black hair and an art for entering social circles with impeccable grace and exquisiteness.

I love them, sweet characters of mine.

But I don’t understand them. We’re too different. Like sand and sea, we meet, we touch, we sweep back and forth together but we’re of different substance.

But Eliza Ellis—rather, Eliza Gillingham—is the first character I truly resonate with. Not on purpose. In no wise did I pen her with conscious hints back to myself. But as the story progressed, I found my heart reaching out to her, settling into her.

Because she was the same.

The way she thought, the things she imagined, her forest and her pet and her stories. I comprehended what made her hurt. I understood the dream world she lived in, because I live in a dream world too.

So, if anyone asks me, “Do you see yourself in any of your characters?”, I’ll pull The Girl from the Hidden Forest from the bookshelf and hand it to them. I’ll tell them Eliza and I are like kindred spirits, that we’ve bridged a friendship between reality and fiction.

Whether you’re a reader or a writer, I hope you stumble upon a character one day that feels like you. It’s a strange and special feeling indeed.

About the Authors

Marta E Greenman – Marta left corporate America in 1998 to become a staff missionary with a church planting organization known today as e3Partners where she led American churches in planting new ones with international church partners. During this period, Marta spent much of her time in the field on evangelism and discipleship traveling to Columbia, Mexico, Moldova, Peru, Romania, Ukraine, Venezuela, and Zimbabwe. She also had the privilege of leading women’s conferences in biblical training.

Marta began teaching Inductive Bible Study at her home church in 1997 where she taught faithfully for fifteen years. Debbie Stuart, a Women’s Ministry Director, said, “Marta Greenman is a master teacher weaving biblical principles, personal stories and clear application with every lesson. She walks in Truth and loves the Word and has dedicated her life to teaching that Truth to women.”

After seven years on the mission field in Romania, Marta began to write Bible study curriculum. Her first study, Bound To Be Free, was published in 2011. May 2011, Marta founded Words of Grace & Truth, a ministry devoted to teaching God’s Word to the nations and teaching others to do the same, through the curriculum God birthed through her teaching ministry. Since then, Leaders, Nations and God and ACTs420NOW have been published. Today she continues to write a series of twelve 30-day devotionals with co-author Maureen H. Maldonado. Their first is entitled FearLESS: God is calling you to be fearless and to FearLESS, second LoveMORE: Your 30-Day Devotional to learn to love like Jesus, third is HopeFULL: Your 30-Day Devotional to Discover Biblical Hope.

Marta’s added GraceAndTruthRadio.World (GTRW), a global radio outreach to the world with God’s message of grace and truth. You can hear her show, Under God with co-host Maureen Maldonado, on GTRW, Monday’s at 3:00pm CST. The passion of her ministry, regardless of the nation she may be in, is teaching God’s Word and equipping others to teach. She is a gifted teacher, speaker and expositor of God’s Word.

Maureen H. Maldonado – Maureen is the second of seven children. Growing up in a home where worldly wealth was a foreign concept, she always felt treasured by her parents and knew she was rich in love. Maureen married young and raised two amazing daughters. Her grandchildren are a blessing beyond anything she could imagine. Recently, she was able to add two granddaughters-in-love who add joy to the mix; and the best yet, God has blessed her with a great-granddaughter!

Maureen has a master’s degree in education from California State University and spent her career as a teacher, vice-principal, and principal in elementary education. Maureen never planned to leave California or the education system, but God had other plans.

After Maureen’s husband was transferred to Arizona in 2006, then to Texas in 2011, she spent several years teaching ‘Just Moved,’ a Christian-based ministry program developed by Susan Miller for women moving homes because of life changes (https://justmoved.org). God used her teaching education and experience as a training ground to begin preparing for Him.

Involved in Bible studies in California, Arizona, and Texas, Maureen grew exponentially in her faith and love of God and His Word. The culmination of these experiences led her to co-host the radio program ‘Under God’ on GraceAndTruthRadio.World, where God’s Word is taught to the nations.

Today, Maureen is using her new-to-her method of studying the Bible and her long-applied teaching methods to teach the next generation of believers. Her prayer is for others to gain as much insight into God’s transformational Word as she has received. She describes it as “opening the shades and letting in all the sunlight on a gloomy day.” Maureen feels honored and humbled to be a part of Words of Grace & Truth and asks others to join in prayer for this needed ministry, the church, our country, and our world. LoveMORE is the second devotional Maureen has co-authored with Marta. Their first devotional was FearLESS: God is calling you to be fearless and to fear less.

Maureen and her husband, Raymond, reside in Texas, where they have transplanted almost their entire family from California.

Unforgiven Book Review

Unforgiven by the gifted author Shelley Shepard Gray is a Contemporary Amish Mystery Romance. This three-hundred-and-four-page paperback has an intriguing cover that begs readers to look inside. It is a nail-biting suspense that had me on the edge of my seat at times.

Set in Crittenden County, Kentucky, this is the tale of Amish outcasts, Tabitha Yoder and Seth Zimmerman. Two years ago Tabitha divorced her abusive husband, who has threatened to kill her. Three years ago Seth served time for being involved in an accidental death. Both of them are still searching for forgiveness and love. I loved how their relationship developed.

Author Gray never disappoints and this book is no exception. Characters are www crafted with depth. They are believable and either lovable or despicable. The author’s vast knowledge of the Amish people and their culture shines brightly as well as the Christian message of faith, forgiveness, hope, and love. The book starts out a wee bit slow, but that is just a few pages, and then it picks up to a page turning pace. The storyline is completely different than any other Amish book I have ever read. It was heart-warming, wwwqwqqwqwqwq, intriguing, and mysterious. There are some twists and turns to keep readers guessing. After the story the author has included a sneak peek at her next book and author notes. Be sure to read the notes to better understand why she wrote the story and more about it.

I highly recommend this fascinating novel. It gave me all kinds of feels and emotions. Amish and mystery fans will adore it. I give it a 5 out of 5 star rating. A copy was provided by the publisher, but these are my honest words.

From the Back Cover

They’re each other’s best hope for redemption–and love

Ex-con Seth Zimmerman has spent the last three years making amends by helping the vulnerable in his former Amish community. Lately, this mission includes calling on Tabitha Yoder, whose divorce from her abusive husband has isolated her from the community. Even though she never comes out of her house to talk to him, Seth knows she watches him from the window while he chops wood, clears her driveway, and drops off food.

An uneasy friendship is just starting to take hold between them when small gifts begin to appear at Tabitha’s home–gifts that can only be from her ex-husband. Seth might be Tabitha’s only hope at maintaining her hard-won freedom from the man whose violent outbursts had almost cost her life. But coming to her rescue might mean he ends up behind bars once again.

The Song of Sourwood Mountains Book Review

The Song of Sourwood Mountains by Kentucky storyteller extraordinaire, Ann Gabhart, is a fascinating Christian historical novel. From the very beginning I was captivated. This is one of her best books to date.

This is the story of Mira Dean. Living in Louisville, Kentucky, she is a schoolteacher with a broken heart. Her fiancé succumbed to tuberculosis taking her dreams of being a wife with him. At church she reconnects with a former classmate, Gordon Covington. He is a missionary in Appalachia and makes an offer that will change Mira’s life. Gordon wants her to marry him and join him in his mountain ministry.

Author Gabhart’s knowledge of Kentucky and its culture shine brightly in this story. I felt transported to Sourwood in 1910 as I met the unique inhabitants. Each character was expertly crafted with loving precision. I loved so many of them. All had many layers and side stories giving them depth. They were relatable and believable. The children, Bo and Ada June, added mirth to the story many times. The Christian message is not hidden in this Christian fiction book. It has an inspiring lesson on trusting God, loving others, and keeping faith.

The story is interesting and deep. My heart went out to many of the characters at times in sorrow and happiness. There is a twist that was a surprise. The writing is superb. It flowed easily and carried me along with it. I hated to leave these people and Sourwood behind when I finished the book.

I highly recommend this amazing novel. A reading group would find it to be a wonderful selection. This would make a perfect gift for a historical fiction lover. It gets a 5+ star rating from me. A copy was provided by the publisher, but these are my honest words.

The Crooked Daughter Celebrate Lit Book Tour

The Crooked Daughter by author DM Griffin is a riveting biblical fiction. This is book one in the author’s Encounter Series. I thought it was educational, inspiring, and entertaining.

The author gives readers her thoughts on what could have happened in this tale. Blending stories from scripture she has woven a captivating, plausible story. This is the story of the woman who was bent over, Priscilla. It is also the story of Aquilla, who has begun working in the temple.

The author has done an exemplary job with this book. It is obvious that much research was done to get every detail correct. Her perspective on what might have happened sounds reasonable. I appreciated that she incorporated scripture and stayed true to biblical accounts. Reading this has broadened my understanding of how disabled people were perceived.

I was immediately engaged with the expertly crafted characters and their stories. The details made the story come alive on the pages so that I felt transported there. The author has a pleasant style of writing that flows well. It quickly turned into a book that I had to keep reading.

Keep in mind this is a fictional tale based on scripture. Extra details are provided by the author. I recommend you read her notes to become totally aware of the facts. I do recommend this fantastic novel. It would make a lovely book club choice. I give it a 5 out of 5 star rating. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

Author: D.M. Griffin

Genre: Biblical Fiction

Release date: March 28, 2024

Choices her father made before she was even born reached a bony finger into her life, clouding her future with hopelessness. Her father’s cold heart had no room for her. Despite the limited perspective brought about by years of adversity, Priscilla fought to keep hope alive and wait for the Lord’s timing.

Aquila lost his father at the most critical time in his life. Battling against grief and bitterness, Aquila uncovers a secret about his father’s death that undermines his faith in a religious system that once defined him. Driven from his homeland, Aquila becomes someone he no longer recognizes.

Two people whose perspectives are skewed by adversity become divinely intertwined in mysterious ways. As they wait upon the Lord for His timing, would Priscilla and Aquila ever find the truth that would lift their eyes to the hills so they could see the purpose of life, not only between a man and a woman but between God and His creation? About the Author

D.M. Griffin is the author of several Biblical Fiction novels as well as devotionals, prayer journals, and Bible studies. She will be releasing a Christian Fantasy series in 2025. She currently resides in Northern California with her husband. They met in middle school a few days after she was transplanted to the West Coast at the tender age of twelve. She has three adult children who have been an endless source of delight and inspiration. She also has a precious new grandchild who brings her joy.

As a native New England girl, she fondly remembers spending her summers there as a child. Thick accents, small towns, and fascinating weather stirred the imagination of a young heart. She has always had a fondness for stories thanks to her imaginative mother who would make up wild, adventurous tales to tell when tucking her into bed as a child.

She truly believes that a book that sits on a shelf unread is like a planted seed that never blossoms. Nothing delights her more than sharing a story.

More from D.M.

My inspiration for writing The Crooked Daughter is multi-faceted. First of all, I was intrigued by the unnamed characters in the Bible who had a single extraordinary encounter with Jesus. The woman who was bent over for eighteen years was one of the four that I selected for The Encounter Series.

Though there were few verses dedicated to this woman, I felt the deeper pull of a story tucked inside the folds of those verses describing Jesus healing her on the Sabbath. I wondered what her story was. What led her there that day? Did she go searching for Him or did Jesus pick her out of the crowd?

Reading that the woman was in that condition for eighteen years is worthy of pondering. I think a lot of times when we read Scripture, we miss the impact of time’s passage. As someone who has suffered from back pain for many years, I could relate to the crooked woman’s story. Eighteen years is a long time to be bent over. The longest I had to remain in a bent position was three weeks. It is extremely difficult to move through the world when the only thing you can see is the ground. Pain is bad enough to endure. Pain for eighteen years must have been excruciating. I know when I am in pain my mood and attitude definitely need adjustment. I would have been a monster after eighteen years!

Developing Priscilla’s character challenged me as a writer. As someone who suffered an early rejection in life only to endure physical infirmity on her own, I didn’t want her to become embittered the way most would after enduring such a trial. There was a delicate balance between lamenting her fate and holding onto hope as it slipped away. Therefore, I introduced the playful, furry character – a dog named Patch.

Aquila’s character was complex and layered. While he was physically able-bodied, his heart was agonizing with grief, responsibility, and disillusioned faith. He was a man who could stand straight even while his soul was bent over.

I have always been intrigued by Aquila and Priscilla in the Bible. As an inspirational couple who served the Lord together, I enjoyed weaving the threads of their story into the fictional account about the crooked woman. I believe that love soothes the wounds of suffering. Falling in love straightens the crooked perspectives of circumstances. Who doesn’t enjoy a good love story that culminates in a strong, enviable marriage?

In The Crooked Daughter, the main character’s condition is symbolic of the political climate of those days. The religious leaders were the ones who were bent over, their perspective about God’s acceptance of people horribly skewed under the heaviness of pride. They could not lift their eyes to the heavens to recognize the Messiah in their midst. Their hearts were hunched under the weight of selfish ambition and prejudicial attitudes. Condemnation was the chain that kept them bound, unable to see the horizon of eternity.

Physical infirmities are horrible to endure. Even worse are the infirmities of the soul. So many things can truly bend us away from God – rejection, selfishness, anger, grief, regret. Thankfully, Jesus is more than a healer. He is our Savior. I truly enjoyed exploring these themes throughout The Crooked Daughter. I hope that readers come away from the story with hope as an anchor for hard times. God truly uses all things for good when we trust in His plan.
