My Thoughts

Marriage Matters by author Cheri Swalwell is a Christian book of marriage.  It doesn’t matter if you are a newlywed or in your golden years of marriage, all couples will enjoy this beautifully written book.  The author has written a timeless book to help those traveling down the marriage road, which at times can get rocky.

This is an extremely well researched, planned, and organized.  I thoroughly enjoy author Swalwell’s style of writing.  It is cozy and personal.  Her books read like a conversation over a cup of Vanilla Caramel Cream Coffee (my favorite) at a kitchen table.  I love that intimate, transparency in a book.  God is first and foremost in all of her books, including this one.

Eleven couples have shared their marriage journey.  Each offer their unique take on marriage with a common thread joining them all together…God.  This book touched my heart in many ways.  The counsel it offers is biblical.  It is such a valuable marriage resource that I would recommend it to any newlywed couple.  It would make a helpful couples small group study even if the couples had been married a different number of years.

The topics discussed are a varied as the couples.  Honesty, openness, infertility, sickness, death, and disappointment are just a few of the issues tackled in this powerful book.  Readers will have new perspectives and encouragement after reading this book.  The most important message is to keep God in the marriage with you and your spouse.

If you are looking for a marriage marriage book that is scripturally based and that will actually be read from cover to cover, this one is for you.  I highly recommend it and give it a 5 star rating.  Any church library would benefit from having a Marriage Matters.  I received a copy from Celebrate Lit but these are my honest words.

More from Cheri

Back in 2007, long before writing was even on my radar, I had a conversation with God about writing a book that would offer hope to those who had lost a child. We had lost our baby the December prior, and I needed to know I would smile again someday. Little did I know that conversation 12 years ago would result in a series of compilation books encouraging others about various topics. The first one, Hope During Heartache was published in 2014, and it’s 13 different men and women’s stories about how they found hope after dealing with the death of a child.

In early 2015, I had another conversation with God and asked Him … “What’s next? Do You have any other compilation books you’d like me to share with others to bring encouragement?” In 2018, Peace During the Pain was published (a book about how to find peace after the diagnosis of cancer) which is 12 different men and women’s stories either about their own personal journey or the journey of a family member.

The goal for 2020 is to publish Joy During the Journey, a compilation of people who have found joy despite living with chronic illness.

During my 2015 conversation, I asked God if He would allow me to write a compilation book about a “happier” topic than death, cancer, and chronic illness. And in His goodness, He said yes! That is when He told me I could write about the topic of marriage, a topic I truly love because being married and having children has always been my heart’s desire. Not only do I get to share encouragement, support, and wisdom from 11 different couples with you in this book, an added bonus is that one of the couples is my parents, another is my youth pastor and his wife, whom I’ve admired for over 25+ years, and yet another is my present pastor and his wife. All three of these couples have significantly modeled biblical marriage for me throughout the years. But that’s not all. There are also military couples, couples who have suffered circumstances no couple should ever have to face, and new friends I’ve met through the writing of this book. I believe you will enjoy as much as I have the encouragement and wisdom from each and every couple who took the time to share a little about their life with you. I’m excited to share the stories between these pages … so sit back, grab your favorite beverage and be prepared to get encouraged!

My Rating

My Thoughts

Author Nancy Kaser has written a Christian book for wives, all wives.  Whether you are a new blushing bride or a seasoned golden one, you will enjoy and glean things from this encouraging book.  Her title, Crown, and book are “Based on Proverbs 12:4, “An excellent wife is the crown of her husband,” Crown includes concrete, scriptural truths and real-life examples that will equip you to be the excellent wife God created you to be.”

There are thirty lessons in this biblically based book divided into six chapters.  Topics are  so relevant to marriage that they seem simple.  Her chapters are on yield, help, smile (yes, really), order, gift, and increase.  Each lesson includes discussion and application questions. For those wanting to dig even deeper, additional materials are available on the author’s website.

There is so much I loved about this book.  The author has an inviting style of writing.  It is open, sincere, humorous, and inspirational.  There were times I felt like I was chatting with a Christian friend about our marriages.

I highly recommend this book and will be gifting it to many.  This would make a lovely wives’ small group study.  It is going on my “keep” shelf because I know I will need to refer to it at times.

This gets a solid 5 out of 5 stars from me.  A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit but these are my own, honest words.

About the Author

Nancy Kaser Bio PicNancy Kaser is a passionate pastor’s wife and veteran missionary. For over twenty-five years, she has taught women’s Bible studies, provided biblical counseling, and been a dynamic women’s conference speaker. Based in Southern California, Nancy teaches literature and history classes at The Writtenburg Door. She and her visionary husband also lead short-term mission trips with the Calvary Chapel movement and run a child-sponsorship organization.

More from Nancy

Closing the church door after my seventh counseling appointment that week, I was overcome with the realization that every appointment had been relatively indistinguishable. The women I counseled our congregation were generally unsatisfied, disappointed, and disillusioned with their marriages, and some were downright rebellious in their role as wives. The same anxieties, the same troubles, (and the same sins creating the anxieties and troubles) came up in almost every meeting. Though these church ladies may have been well-versed in the scriptures, no one had taught them how to live out biblical principals in their everyday lives.

As a pastor’s wife, I wished I could meet with every married lady in my church and offer practical discipleship with this hope: that a glorious, fulfilling, and God-honoring marriage—to the same guy she is married to right now! —is absolutely possible through obedience to God’s word.
