My Thoughts

Letter from Paul to the Church in Galatia and Us! by author Mary Weins is a Bible Study on the Book of Galatians. This devotional workbook is meant to help readers, whether individually or in a group, delve more deeply into those scriptures and develop a closer walk with God. It is a thorough study going through the chapters.

Beginning the study is a story which relates to the subject in each chapter. The stories were interesting. Next is the learning section. At the end are questions and insights for personal growth. This study’s length determines on how much time the student wants to put into it. Some chapters were more interesting than others. Topics of interest for me were false prophets and what does a Christian look like.

I enjoyed the author’s writing style. It was pleasant, easy to read, and flowed well. Mrs. Weins had done her research. The book is well planned and organized. It is an interactive and helpful tool in learning more about Galatians.

I recommend this book. It would be nice both both individual and small group study. It gets a 4 out of 5 stars from me. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit but these are my honest words.

As a Pastor’s kid, Mary has been involved in the church most of her life. She has led many Bible study groups in homes, in the church environment, and in jails; Mary has worked in various women’s ministries, and is a writer, speaker and Bible Teacher.

Currently, Mary and her husband are retired and live in Northern California. They have 3 sons, and 5 grandchildren who live nearby. When not writing, speaking, leading Bible study groups, or studying God’s Word on her own, Mary enjoys entertaining friends, cooking, and playing with her grandchildren…not necessarily in that order.

Letter from Paul: to the Church in Galatia…and Us!

As a preacher’s kid, I was brought up in a strict, structured home environment. This upbringing created a harsh view of Christianity and an overwhelming fear of hell, fire, and damnation for me.

It was not until years later that I found a church emphasizing God’s love. I read the Word and prayed daily and began to develop a close, personal relationship with God. But fear kept haunting me until I really got into Galatians and broke it down, verse by verse. The book of Galatians is a crucial book of the Bible for me because it emphasizes God’s love and forgiveness and provides assurance that, even though I mess up at times, God still loves me!

It is my hope and prayer that you, too, can embrace the beautiful message of love and acceptance contained in Galatians and apply it to your life. When we fully submit and trust God for our lives, an overwhelming peace envelops us. We no longer need to fear Him. He is a loving God who provides all our needs and protects, encourages, comforts, and directs us. He is our heavenly Father, our constant companion, and a friend who really does have all the right answers.

Living in a right relationship with God dramatically changes the way we view ourselves and the world. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2 Cor. 5:17 KJV).

Written in a down-to-earth, easy-to-read approach, the Bible studies contained in Letter from Paul highlight the main points covered in each chapter of Galatians.

It is my hope and prayer that this book will erase the doubts and fears of Christians who question their salvation or fear that they are not good enough to maintain it and to point the way for the unsaved to realize how easy it is to become a child of God.

My Thoughts

The Melody of the Mulberries by author Tonya Jewel Blessing is a Christian Historical Southern Romance. It is the second book in author Blessing’s Big Creek Series. The story continues in Appalachia in the 1920’s.

Having not read the first book, I was a bit lost. It felt like I was walking into a movie at a halfway point. I really enjoyed the setting, characters, and author’s style of writing. All of those drew me in and kept me reading. In fact I am going to get the first book now.

The author has done a wonderful job making realistic, well rounded characters. Her tale is well thought and very well written. It deals with topics of grief, unwed mothers, family, love, consequences, and prison. All are relevant today.

I was surprised at times. The author included twists and turns to keep readers on their toes. Her story is whimsical and draws readers into the West Virginia world of that time. The folklore and beliefs she wove into her story made it very interesting. Many I had heard but I learned some new ones.

Sprinkled with faith, humor, inspiration, and drama is a story that will tug on your heartstrings. It stayed with me long after I finished reading about Coral, Ernest, Charlotte, Mercy, and others. I would recommend this book but please read the first one. It receives a 4 out of 5 star rating from me. Celebrate Lit provided a copy but these are my own, honest words.

This sequel is set in the late 1920s Appalachia, where granny witches and spiritualism often show the path for wanderers to take, especially in matters of the heart.

Coral sat in contemplation under a mulberry tree. It was spring, and the fragrant female blossoms promised the mid-summer arrival of first white, then pink, then crimson, and finally deep purple berries. The white berries were hard and tart and enjoyed by the quail, wild turkeys, mocking birds, and blue jays. The blackish purple berries were soft and sweet – perfect for pies and jams.

When the berries turned white, Coral would thank the good Lord for providing food for the birds, and when the berries ripened she would thank the good Lord for the sweetness savored in her mouth and curse the birds for wanting more than their share.

Like the changing mulberries, Appalachian siblings Coral and Ernest Ashby, navigate their lives and loves through the Spanish Flu epidemic, poverty, and various as sundry prejudices. Coral is determined to visit the family nemesis, Charlie, who now stews in prison.When Ernest’s previous love interest, Mercy, returns to the holler of Big Creek, she discovers that Ernest has a new romantic attraction. He is singing a melody for Charlotte, the older Ashby brother’s widow. No matter, Mercy has brought along her own spiritual tools to circumvent the inconvenience and a special friend who guides her way.

Accompanied by friends and foes, matters of the heart complicate life for Coral and Ernest. Relationships must be journeyed carefully.

More about Tonya Jewel Blessing: Growing up Tonya spent numerous vacations and holidays in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia. Most of her adult life has been spent in full time ministry with a focus on helping women. She has traveled nationally and internationally as a conference speaker. For a number of years, Tonya and her husband operated a retreat facility in Colorado for pastors and missionaries. She and her husband currently live in South Africa. They are the founders and directors of Strong Cross Ministries, a non-profit organization that assists local churches, pastors, cross-cultural workers, and others in Christian leadership in providing spiritual reconciliation and humanitarian relief to the poorest in the world. Greetings From Author Tonya Jewel Blessing

The Melody of the Mulberries is book two in the Big Creek Series. Both books are set during the late 1920s in the wild and wonderful state of West Virginia. The Appalachian Mountains were untamed in the 1920s and remain so in part today. The wonder of the hills is breathtaking, magnificent, and glorious.

The term “wild wonderful West Virginia” was used as early as 1969 before being adapted in the 1970s as the state slogan.

In 1937, my mother, Virginia Ashby, was born in the rural hills of West Virginia. She spent several of her formative years in an area known as Big Creek. I have borrowed my mother’s maiden name, several names from her past, and the name Big Creek.

The morning mist hanging in the lowlands, the dew on the ground, along with the green of spring and the deep red, sparkling gold, and brilliant oranges of fall draw me visually, emotionally, and on some level spiritually to its feral fascination. John Denver recorded in his tribute to West Virginia, “Take me home country roads to the place I belong…” Certainly, there are seasons in my life where I long for the steep, curvy country roads of my youth. This is one deeply satisfying reason for writing about hope with connections to West Virginia, a life held close to my heart.

It is a pleasure and an honor to share this story with the Celebrate Lit family. My southern story is an authentically derived historical romance for young adults and for women of all ages who love Appalachian lore and West Virginia history. It contains some depictions of spiritualism and traditional Christianity during the 1920s in West Virginia. It continues with the inter-racial dealings between two communities, where, some are friends and some are foes.

My Thoughts

From the Garden into Eternity by author Pearl Nsiah-Kumi is a short seventy-seven page book that packs so much essential important information between its covers. This Christian book is about being saved and living the Christian life. Doesn’t that sound like a book everyone should read?

I enjoyed the author’s style of writing. It was easy to read and understand. Her book was well thought, organized, and researched. I loved all of the biblical references.

Whether a seeker, fledgling or seasoned believer something can be gleaned from this book. This book sticks to the basics – salvation and living as a Christian. Sometimes we need to read or hear it again to breathe fresh life into us.

I highly recommend this book to anyone. Reading it would be good for your soul. This would be a nice Christmas gift for most anyone, even an older child. It receives 5 stars from me. Celebrate Lit provided a copy but these are my own thoughts.

I wrote this book: FROM THE GARDEN INTO ETERNITY, because I felt the need to explain step-by-step how we, people created in the image of God lost our relationship with Him, and how that relationship could be restored. Along with the explanation, I also felt the need to stress the urgency of the restoration of that relationship. Why the urgency? It is urgent, because time is running out for all of us, and if one’s relationship isn’t restored in this life, eternity will be awful. Since no one knows how much time they have left in this life, we each need to respond to God’s love now, so we can have the assurance of a blissful eternity in heaven. Each person has to make a personal decision about their eternity.

The Choice is Yours Celebrate Lit Book Tour and Giveaway.

Author Barbara Dahlgren has written a fifty-two chapter devotional, inspirational book for Christians in all walks of their lives in her The Choice is Yours. This is a type of guidebook for we choose to believe or think or act. The chapters are meant for weekly reading.

The author has organized and planned her book well. It begins with an illustration about Christian life and introduces the subject for the chapter. That is followed by practical life application so it is relevant in today’s world. At the end is scripture and an area to add personal reflections for applying this choice.

The writing style is nice and flows without a hitch. The weekly lessons are very short and seemed more like daily ones at times. There were a few items with which I did not agree or for one reason or another did not sit right with me. Some of her ideas on Jesus were a bit off according to my belief.

The author clearly states she is a humorist and these are taken from the most popular of her blogs. Scripture is only partially quoted in this book. The author has found if readers look up the remaining scripture on their own, in their own bible, they learn better. I agree with her.

This would make a nice reader or small group choice. It would lead to lively discussion on the content of this book, how to work out each choice and to encourage each other. It could be used individually equally well.

It gets a 3 star rating from me. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit and these are my honest words.

When my granddaughter was in preschool, she came home one day and was sad. Her mom asked what was wrong. Sophia replied, “My teacher said I didn’t make good choices today.”

My first book was called Zorro and Me. It was about my husband, whom I’ve nicknamed Zorro, and our experiences in 50 years of ministry. Usually known as a humorist, I try to intersperse a lot of personal experiences in my speaking and writing. My philosophy is to take my faith, but not myself, too seriously. I think we would all be happier if we chose to laugh more and criticize less.

I was born many years ago in the foothills of the Ozarks in a town with a population of 10.
While on a mission trip to Nigeria, our children were held captive by the police for a few hours.
My son was unexpectedly born in a hotel room while we were traveling, so we used a dresser drawer as a baby bed.
I’ve mounted a camel near the Great Pyramids in Egypt, climbed the Great Wall in China, leaned with the Tower of Pisa in Italy, and been on safari in Kenya.
While on a teen trip touring the White House, one of my children became ill, so the Secret Service took him outside where he barfed behind a big bush on the White House lawn. It’s the one on the left when you look at pictures of the White House.

Guess what! They are all true. There’s more, but I don’t want to give all my secrets away today.

Lake Season by Author Denise Hunter Celebrate Lit Tour

Lake Season, A Bluebell Inn Romance, by talented award winning author Denise Hunter is a Contemporary Christian Romance. It was a delightful family story with a sweet romance. As I read it I could picture seeing this pop up as a Hallmark movie one day.

Author Hunter is a prolific wordsmith. I have read many of her works and can honestly say that she has never disappointed me. Her style of writing draws readers into the the story. I felt like I was there. The conversation was natural and not stiff. Lake Season is a beautiful novel.

This is the story of Molly Bennett and her siblings. Both of their parents were killed in an accident and the children want to see their parents’ dream to fruition. Enter a romance writer, hidden love letter from years ago and this becomes a captivating book that is such a page turner it cannot be put down.

I loved this tale and truly hope to see it on Hallmark. I highly recommend it. It definitely gets a 5 star rating from me. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit but these are my honest words.

My Thoughts

Author Carol McLeod has written a captivating book for women. It is a Christian Living book but could be used as a devotional. I found it to be thought provoking, inspiring, and something that would be beneficial to any woman.

Using scripture, biblical principles, and examples author McLeod speaks to women about their importance and self-worth. She states “I want all women to know their eternal value, to understand their God-given purpose, and to walk in their sacred calling in life.” Don’t all Christian women yearn for this?

The author has an engaging style of writing. In her opening she said as she penned her book she “pictured you, the reader, across the kitchen table from me.” That is exactly how it reads, like a conversation with a helpful friend sharing good counsel.

The opulent words drew me in and made me want to continue reading. However this is a book that needs to be read a chapter at a time and ruminated. There are twenty-eight chapters dealing with various topics. The chapters are short but powerful. I loved the inspirational quote at the end of the chapter from people I recognized, such as Max Lucado, Barbara Bush, and Beth Moore.

This is a heavy hitting book that has the potential to change lives. While some of the information is known it is presented in a delightfully new fashion. It would be a wonderful book club selection and great gift.

I highly recommend this book. Any woman would certainly glean a bit of encouragement and inspiration. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit but these are my honest words.

Significant is the book that I have yearned to write ever since I was a young woman in college and was deeply impacted by Elisabeth Elliot’s classic work Let Me Be a Woman. That book, which Elisabeth wrote in the form of advice to her daughter, Valerie, on the brink of her marriage, taught me, in every way that mattered, how to be a woman of value and purpose. Elisabeth knew that the only way a woman could exert any lasting influence on her culture was to embrace the truths found in the Word of God.

I remember longing to have a profound influence on a generation of women the way Elisabeth did on the young women of my own generation. I aspired, even at the naive age of twenty-two, to be a voice of wisdom and purpose for the women who would come after me.

The years flew by, and soon I was a young mother who was homeschooling her brood of five creative, active children. Marisol Spanish Rose Celebrate Lit Book Tour & Giveaway

Welcome to my stop on Celebrate Lit’s book tour for Marisol, Spanish Rose by author Elva Cobb Martin. I love that the author has included pictures for us. She is giving away a vintage nautical writing journal and a $20 Amazon gift card so be sure and enter the giveaway.

My Thoughts

From the first page I was hooked. This is a Christian Historical Romance and has everything needed to be a page turner. I could not put the book down.

The author is an excellent storyteller. Her tale would twist and turn. Most characters were endearing. The villains were as detestable as they should be. The main characters Marisol and Ethan were complex and made the story intriguing.

Author Martin has a nice writing style. Her book was well thought and written with twists and surprises that made it an adventure to read. Scripture and faith was not hidden in this novel which I appreciated.

This book deals with timeless issues in a gracious way. It tackles forgiveness, grief, loss, faith, abuse, death, family, and love. This is a poignant story in parts and joyful in other. It is a beautiful tale of new beginnings.

I highly recommend this excellent book. It gets 5 out of 5 stars from this reader. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit but these are my honest thoughts.

A couple of things inspired me to write Marisol ~ Spanish Rose, in addition to my love of historical romance fiction set in the colonial/pirate era of Charles Town and the Spanish Main.

I ran across a teaching of how people often let the one terrible moment of their lives define them and their future. Know anyone like this?

I envisioned a heroine in the 1700’s who let her “terrible moment”—being molested and accidentally killing the Spanish nobleman who attacks her—define her and her future destiny.

My premise for this idea and novel is: Love, forgiveness, and determination can overcome the most horrifying experiences and poor choices when we invite God into the equation.

Loving horses, particularly the white Lipizzaners, I named my heroine Marisol and set the attack on her father’s Andalusian Stud Farm in Cadiz, Spain in 1740. Andalusians are the Spanish horses in the ancestry of the Lipizzaners. And they can be trained to do dancing steps with a dancing maiden called the Flamenco, which my heroine can do well. Marisol’s exciting Flamenco plays a pivotal part in the novel.

All this story idea needed now was an exciting, handsome Charles Town privateer—sometimes pirate—who will cross paths with my heroine when she flees Spain after killing the Spanish nobleman who molested her.

Captain Ethan Becket, backslidden former Charles Town minister, has returned to the sea, grieving the loss of his wife and child.

By the time these two get together at the indentured block in Charles Town, Marisol has discovered she is with child.

My Thoughts

Today’s lifestyle seems to have grown away from what is mannerly and polite. Some children have no idea the correct way to act, Author Jungu Olobia has written a book to help (if it will be read and absorbed). It is a God glorifying, scriptural based book on manners and being considerate.

Author Olobia has penned an exceptional book that is a guide for everyone and not just children. It explains and reviews family, social, and church etiquette and manners. Scripture references are given. There are seventeen chapters in this informative book dealing with family interaction, church behavior, table manners, greetings, and so much more. I learned things about other countries’ etiquette that I did not know.

Olobia has a lovely style of writing. Her book is part memoir and part instructional manual. I enjoyed reading about her life. She sounds like a woman with a heart for God.

I highly recommend this book. It would be glorious to see manners make a comeback. It gets a 5 out of 5 stars from me. I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit but these are my honest words.

Smoke Screen by Terri Blackstock Celebrate Lit Tour

My Thoughts

Author Terri Blackstock has written a contemporary Christian novel unlike her others in Smoke Screen. It is a suspenseful, romantic Christian mystery that had me on the edge of my seat flipping pages to see what would happen next. Blackstock is a talented wordsmith indeed.

I was immediately drawn in to the story and felt the characters’ emotions. It is the tale of a love gone wrong where parents never wanted their children to be together. Smoke Screen deals with gritty real life issues so I would only recommend it to adults.

The characters are well defined and relatable. Some have many flaws and it is hard to read about them but not unimaginable. Conversations were realistic. Even the chats with the children rang true.

This is the tale of Brenna, newly divorced, and Nate, her high school sweetheart. Brenna is going through so extremely difficult trying times. Her struggles make her seek solace in a bottle of alcohol. There are many sides to this character. Nate is a complicated guy, too. I loved that he encouraged Brennan to lean on God and trust Him.

I would recommend this is adult readers that enjoy suspense and mystery. There are many life issues and timely life lessons faced in this book. I rated it a 5 out of 5. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit but these are my honest words.

Excerpt from Smoke Screen

I woke up in a blinding bright room, my clothes off and something clamped to my face. I tried to reach it, but I couldn’t bend my right arm, and my hand stung. An IV was taped to my other hand, but I moved carefully and touched the thing over my face.

An oxygen mask. I tried to sit up. “What happened?”

T-bird came to my bedside, a sheen of smoky sweat still soiling his face. “Nate, lie back, man.”

“The fire,” I said. “Need to get back. My men.”

“They’re still there. Making progress. But you’re not going anywhere near a fire for a month or so.”

I took the mask off and coughed a little, but managed to catch my breath. “A month?”

“Yep. Second degree burns on 20 percent of your body. Some of the burns are deep.”

It came back to me, the event that had gotten me here.

“The family. Were they injured?”

“Not a scratch or burn. Turns out it was a U.S. Senator from Kansas. He says you’re a hero.”

“You know I had no choice. They were in the path—”

“Take the praise where you can get it, man. We don’t get that much.”

I looked at my right side. My right arm was bandaged, and so was my side and down my right leg to the point where my boots had stopped the flames. Second degree wasn’t so bad, I told myself. Third degree would have been brutal. I’d be able to leave the hospital soon. I’d heal.

“I won’t need a month,” I said.

“Yes, you will. They can’t let you go back. Doctor’s orders. You’re grounded until he releases you.”

I managed to sit up, but it was a bad idea. The burns pulling on my skin reminded me why I shouldn’t. “I can’t be grounded during fire season. Are you crazy? I need to be there. You don’t have enough men as it is.”

“Sorry, Nate. It is what it is. Why don’t you go home to Carlisle for a while? Take it easy.”

Go home? Pop had just been pardoned, and he and my mom were trying to navigate the reunion. Though she would love to have me home, I didn’t know if I was up to it. My father could be challenging, and fourteen years of prison hadn’t done him any favors.

Love’s Allegiance Celebrate Lit Book Tour & Giveaway

My Thoughts

Love’s Allegiance is Book 4 in author Linda Shenton Matchett’s Wartime Brides Series. Don’t worry if you haven’t read the first three, this one could be read as a stand alone easily.

This is the story of Irwin and Rochelle. It is in many ways like the Bible story of Isaac and Rachel. I was immediately drawn in to this beautiful fictional romance. It is strong on inspiration and faith which made me love it even more.

Irwin’s father arranges for Rochelle to visit with the possibility of marrying Irwin, unbeknownst to Irwin. Irwin is unhappy with the idea due to past hurt. Their story unfolds beautifully.

The author has a style of writing that is lovely. I enjoyed the conversations that sounded true to the era. The characters were very lifelike and relatable. Even secondary ones wiggled their way into my heart while reading.

I learned some things about the war that I previously did not know. That is always important when reading to me. Faith is not hidden but in plain sight. This is what I expect in a Christian novel. Thank you to the author!

On the downside, the book seemed to end abruptly. I was reading along at a nice pace and then bam it’s over. It left me wanting more. Obviously there will be a sequel.

I highly recommend this book for those that enjoy historical wartime fiction. I rated it 4 out of 5 stars. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit but these are my honest words.

Linda Shenton Matchett is an author, speaker, and history geek. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, she was born a stone’s throw from Fort McHenry and has lived in historic places all her life. Linda is a member of ACFW, RWA, and Sisters in Crime. She is a volunteer docent and archivist for the Wright Museum of WWII and a trustee for her local public library.
