Chancing the Frontiersman by talented author Andrea Byrd is the Book One in the Wilderness Romance Series. This poignant tale is a Christian, historical romance with mystery, intrigue, and inspiration. I was captivated from the very beginning.

Set right after the Revolutionary War in Kentucky Territory in 1782, this is the story of childhood friends, Jacob and Dawn. They find each other on the trail west going to the Kentucky frontier. They travel together to find the uncle of Dawn’s young stepsister, Mary. Dawn and Mary have both been treated unjustly by a parent who has no desire to care for them. Dawn has a physical disability that some may find hard to handle. She has a cheerful attitude and strong faith to guide her.

It was easy to become invested in the characters and their stories. Author Byrd did a fantastic job creating this riveting story and the people that live in it. It is evident that she researched the time period and people. The dialogue sounded accurate. I gleaned a lot of information about the territory and what the travelers were up against.

The story moved along at an easy pace. The writing is exquisite. I appreciated the spiritual messages from this novel as well as the many life lessons. There are a few twists and turns to keep readers on their toes. This was an educational, entertaining, and inspiring story. I found it hard to put down.

I highly recommend this Christian fiction book. Reading groups would definitely enjoy this as a selection. After the story the author has written some notes that are very informative. She also has included some discussion questions for individual or group study. I give this book a 5 star rating. A complimentary copy was provided by CelebrateLit, but these are my honest words.

As a reader of historical fiction, I love reaching the end of a novel and reading the author’s note to learn how real people and events inspired the written words. Now, as an author myself, I try to provide the same for my own readers and Chancing the Frontiersman’s Heart is no exception.

While the Siege of Yorktown is considered the last major battle of the revolutionary war, ten months afterward, American forces would suffer great losses at the Battle of Blue Licks. During this conflict, more than sixty Kentuckians would lose their lives.

However, what intrigued me most about this piece of American history was actually the events leading up to it. The Battle of Blue Licks was a result of a skirmish a few days prior: the Siege of Bryan’s Station. In what is now Lexington, Kentucky, a fortified settlement was attacked by Delaware and Shawnee warriors, as well as Canadian Rangers.

Playing a vital part in the station’s ability to withstand the attack, of course, were the women of Bryan’s Station. During this conflict, the women would do more than simply provide support though. They would put themselves directly in harm’s way, venturing outside the safety of the settlement walls, in order to fetch water from the spring. Though Bryan’s Station was surrounded and they could be descended upon the moment they left the fold, the women (and girls) marched forwarded with heads held high to do what had to be done.

As soon as I learned of the women of Bryan’s Station and their act of bravery, I knew I had to weave these historical events into this novel. I hope you find their story as inspiring as I did!

Petticoat Ranch Celebrate Lit Book Tour

Petticoat Ranch by the amazing storyteller Mary Connealy is a Christian historical western. This is a lovely start to the Petticoats and Cowboys series, which mixes romance with suspense and adds in faith. It is a brilliant tale and held my attention throughout the book.

Set in 1867 Texas, this is the story of Sophie Edwards and her four daughters. They are left to maintain their home after Sophie’s husband was killed by horse thieves. There is danger for the ladies and a hero wanting to help.

The writing is exceptional in this beautiful story. Characters are realistic and easily relatable. Many are lovable and a few are downright despicable. The story is captivating. It had me turning page after page until I had finished the entire book. There is plenty of wit and humor to entertain readers as well as some life lessons and faith.

I highly recommend this wonderful book. A reading group would enjoy devouring and dissecting this as one of their selections. After the story are previews of other books, including Book 2 in the series. This get a 5 star rating from me. A complimentary copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest thoughts.

Petticoat Ranch is my husband’s story.

My husband is a cowboy…or rather he’s a Nebraska cattleman. Our ‘horse’ though we used to have horses, is now a pick-up truck and a four-wheeled rig that can crawl all over rugged land.

My Cowboy grew up in a family of seven sons.

His mom was about the coolest, nicest lady ever born…a living embodiment of ‘Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff.’ She could tell stories of chaos and mayhem for HOURS and just laugh. I loved her.

Then I married My Cowboy and we had FOUR DAUGHTERS.

My husband spent his whole life confused.

And example of a usual conversation:

My Cowboy: Why won’t they stop crying!?

Why won’t they stop giggling?

Why won’t they stop TALKING?

He was constantly befuddled. He loved them (still does) so madly but they did NOT make sense to him.

That’s Petticoat Ranch.

A mountain man comes to find his brother’s wife…his brother died and he’s come to ‘rescue’ them. Except they’re unbelievable tough and competent and, well, maybe they could use a little rescuing, life is tough in Texas for a widow and her four children and, in a weak moment, she agrees to marry this man who looks EXACTLY like her husband. A man she never knew existed.

And there they are. Her and her four tough Texas daughters.

Him who’s pretty much never seen a woman in his life, and certainly not a CHILD.

Now they’re married about twenty-four hours after she found out he existed…and they have to figure out how to get along.

I try really hard to thread that needle where a man is befuddled by a woman…but he’s not stupid. A woman is exasperated by a man…but she’s got a good heart.

I shove them together…and leave them to try and get along. If someone is trying to kill them, or steal their ranch, or whatever horrible outlaw is in the book, that adds to the fun.

I shove them together and then leave them to figure out how to get along.

I love Petticoat Ranch. I’ve done this kind of book many times, the mountain man who’s never been around women. The feisty lady rancher who’s used to being in charge. And never did I find that sweet spot quite as well as I did in Petticoat Ranch.

One of my very favorite books.

Ah, tough, self-sufficient Sophie. She really can use the help and he really does look exactly like her dead husband.

Ah, confused but definitely attracted Clay. He’s trying to take care of her and take charge…and she’s not cooperating.

She was definitely in charge when his brother was alive…he was kinda cranky and inept. Why won’t Clay just let her run things?

All those tough little Texas cowgirl daughters who can’t quite figure out if this is they’re pa, given back to them by God…or if this is some new guy that they are desperate to make love them, when their real pa was so desperate to have sons.

I love that Wild Heart Books is re-releasing Petticoat Ranch.

Mail-Order Baroness Celebrate Lit Book Tour

Mail-Order Baroness by the amazing wordsmith Misty M. Beller is a Christian historical romance. Set in Montana this is the second book in her Lords of the Rockies series. I loved it and the series.

This is the story of James and Rose. These are interesting characters. I was immediately invested in them and their story. So much happens in this beautiful tale. It is woven with the Christian message, romance, danger, and intrigue. Packed with a few twists, this will have you turning pages to see what happens next.

All of the characters are expertly crafted. The majority of them are sweet and lovable, but there is a despicable bad guy. One of my favorites, Mrs. Wang, is a welcomed familiar character that returns in this story. She brings lightness and love to the Balfour family.

The Montana setting was great and had exciting weather. It played a big part in many of the scenes. The writing was inviting and easy to follow. The story flowed along at a nice pace. It kept my interest and made me want to keep reading.

I highly recommend this book. It receives a 4 star review from this reader. A complimentary copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

Convict’s Courtship by author KyLee Woodley is a Christian historical novel. This is the third installment in the Outlaw Hearts series. It would be best to read the first two books before this one, but this could be read as a stand alone.

Set in the mining town of Virginia City, this is the story of Clara Alexander. She is a young woman who wants to become a journalist. After finishing school, Clara returns home and hopes to repair her strained relationship with her father while pursuing her dream of writing. Beau Vulpe is a reformed convict. He works in the mine and helped Clara, which threw them together.

The writing is excellent. Author Woodley mixes romance, suspense, and intrigue to keep her story moving at a good pace. There are twists and turns to keep readers on their toes. The Christian message is beautiful. Historical details will please history buffs, and all readers will be able to glean some information. The family drama is heavy and interesting.

I highly recommend this book. It is an enjoyable read with themes of grace, perseverance, and second chances. There is a lot to dissect and discuss if reading groups want to grab this for a club selection.

Plain Jane’s Secret Admirer by author Anne Blackburne is a Christian Amish novel. This is Book Eleven in The Heart of the Amish series. This is a sweet romance that is nice to read.

It is the tale of Jane Bontrager and her secret admirer. He leaves her thoughtful gifts and letters to express his affection. Jane and her friends are taking care of Lizzie’s bakery and cat while she is on her honeymoon trip.

I enjoyed the author’s writing style. I was immediately interested in the story and found it easy to follow. Characters are relatable and lovable. The cats in the story are mischievous and provide some chuckles. The bakery scenes are authentic and extremely well written. I could almost smell the Amish Cinnamon Rolls and fresh coffee.

There are some twists and turns, mystery, danger, and Christian lessons. I love the way the Amish help each other and forgive. Those are lessons for everyone. I highly recommend this lovely book. It gets a 5 star rating from me. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

Jane’s cat is a tabby named Secret, because she can tell her fluffy pal all of the wishes, hopes and dreams closest to her heart.

As the story opens, Jane is waving her brother John and Lizzie off on their wedding trip, promising to take good care of the bakery – and Lizzie’s precious cat, Little Mouse – while they are away.

But then Jane finds a mysterious note from someone claiming to be her secret admirer taped to the back door of the bakery, and her heart flutters, wondering if it could possibly be her long time crush, Samuel Mast, the buggy maker, who put it there, along with a whimsical little gift.

Blaze of Courage Celebrate Lit Tour

Blaze of Courage by author Avril Swan is Book 2 in The Peshtigo Fire Chronicles. This Christian historical novel is filled with mystery, intrigue, a Christian message, a sweet romance, and many life lessons. It is a poignant, touching story. I was immediately caught up in the story and its characters’ lives.

This story is set in 1871 from Peshtigo, Wisconsin to Lexington, Kentucky. It is the tale of Charlotte, who has been severely burned. She goes to Milwaukee for medical treatment. However, her mother and sister did not survive, leaving Charlotte by herself.

Charlotte bravely finds herself on the road from Chicago to Kentucky to return a locket and fulfill a dying friend’s wish. Along the way she joins a horse breeder, Stephan, and twin boys, Sebastian and Tom. They are all met with danger, highwaymen, and intrigue during their journey.

It is an exciting, well written story. At times I laughed while other times I was anxious for Charlotte’s safety. I felt all types of the emotions while getting lost in this story. Every page is full of heart-pounding moments as the characters strive to merely survive. The author has done an exceptional job crafting this story and characters.

When I wrote Blaze of Courage, I wanted to create a story centered on three things I love: adventure, faith, and horses. I adored horses as a kid, and although my family didn’t have the time, space, or money for a big animal, my mom managed to enroll me in a horseback riding camp when I was around nine or ten. I was over the moon! Since then, I’ve had more chances to interact with and learn about these loyal, graceful (and sometimes ungraceful) creatures. Blaze of Courage wouldn’t be complete without them!

In addition to everything related to horses, Charlotte and Stefan’s journey in Blaze of Courage centers on the theme of returning to Christ. Unlike Carina, who held onto her faith despite her struggles, the fire and its aftermath severely challenged Charlotte’s beliefs. Have you ever felt like hiding from everyone after being hurt? It’s often easier to hide our feelings and blame others rather than face what truly bothers us, and in Charlotte’s case, this includes trying to hide from and blame God. Of course, hiding from God is a strategy doomed to fail. What happens once Charlotte realizes this is something for you, dear reader, to discover.

Mail-Order Duchess, is Book 1 in the Lords of the Rockies Series by talented wordsmith, Misty Beller. This is a Christian, historical romance with danger and adventure that is absolutely captivating. I was immediately invested in the poignant story and its wonderful characters.

This is the story of Mandie Beaumont, a widow from the East (Savannah) looking for a place to hide to avoid the predicament and danger she now finds herself in. It is also the story of Enoch Balfour. He is the second son of an English Duke. After a fatal accident taking the life of his eldest brother, he is now the senior son and inherits all of its duties and responsibility.

The author has an engaging writing style. Her characters are carefully crafted into the perfect cast. Even secondary ones are outstanding, like Mrs. Wang. They are lovable as well as relatable. The author’s descriptions made me feel like I was there. There is a villainous man that is downright dastardly. The pace of the novel is even and kept my attention. Her Christian message is beautiful as well as a few life lessons. Twists and turns kept things lively.

I highly recommend this beautiful story. It is perfect for readers that enjoy historical Christian romance with adventure. There is much to ponder and discuss for a reading group or individual. The Red Cottage by talented wordsmith Hannah Linder is a masterpiece! This Christian, historical, mystery, romance novel is full of twists and surprises. From the beginning, I was captivated by the poignant story and its eccentric cast of characters. I was fascinated by the intricacies of this emotionally charged tale.

This is the story of Meg Foxcroft and Tom McGwen. Their love story is far from perfect, but delightful nonetheless. It begins with stolen nights aboard a small boat star gazing. Tom is gentle, kind, and humble. His deep love for Meg is palpable. It is reciprocated even though her uncle does not approve. They only want to marry, build a little cottage, paint it red, and begin a new life together. However, as happens often, life throws them a devastating surprise and their paths change.

The writing is exquisite. Characters are carefully crafted and become our friends. The author takes readers on a journey to a time and place that opens our imagination. Her pace is smooth and steady. The Christian message is simply beautiful as well as the life lessons.

I highly recommend this exquisite novel. It would be a delight for a reader group. There is so much to discuss. It gets a 5 out of 5 star rating. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

Dueling Hearts

Dueling Hearts by author Vickie McDonough is Book Three in her Windswept Weddings series. This is a Christian, historical romance that has some unexpected twists in it. Even though it is the finale, it may easily be read as a stand alone.

Set in Carolinas in the mid 1850s, before the Civil War. Normally I am not a fan of Southern plantation books, but this one was well done. The author was gentle and respectful in her handling of slavery. There are many life lessons and Christian lessons tucked into this inspiring tale. Characters deal with heartbreak, betrayal, forgiveness, and trust.

This is the story of Reed Bishop. He is the grandson of Cooper Reed from Book Two and a surgeon. It is also the tale of Carina Zimmer. She runs their struggling plantation by herself while her father stays drunk. With a major grudge against the Bishop family, Carina still mourns the death of her brother

The sparks fly between Reed and Carina. Unfortunately because of family issues and history they can only be frenemies. Or can they? The author takes us on their journey of faith and romance in this emotionally charged novel. A few surprises are tucked in to make the story even more interesting.The end snuck up on me and left me wanting more to tie all of the loose ends together.

I highly recommend Dueling Hearts. It is a lovely book and would make a nice reading group selection because of the various lessons it offers. I rate it a 4 out of 5 star rating. A complimentary copy of this book was received from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own, honest opinion.

While I was researching ideas for Dueling Hearts, my third book in the Windswept Weddings series, I stumble across some information about dueling in America. I hadn’t read a Christian book that had characters who were in a duel, so I thought that would be an interesting premise. Reed Bishop, my hero in Dueling Hearts, is the grandson of Cooper Reed from Secrets of the Heart. He finds himself forced into a duel on the eve of his leaving for Scotland to become a doctor. Dueling in the United States had mostly been outlawed by 1850. The Broderick-Terry duel, fought in California in 1859, is often considered the last notable duel in the United States. U.S. Senator David Broderick and California Supreme Court Chief Justice David S. Terry engaged in a pistol duel near Lake Merced, resulting in Broderick’s death. Sadly, the two were once friends.

The Songbird and the Surveyor

The Songbird and the Surveyor by author Denise Weimer, is a Christian adventure historical novel that caught my interest immediately. Within the first few pages I was invested in the characters and their stories that beautifully meshed into one tale. This became a glorious page turning delight.

Set in Georgia, this is a tale about gold prospecting, unscrupulous people, marriage of convenience, and trusting God. The characters are masterfully crafted. Each one is unique and lovable, relatable, or despicable. Do you enjoy folk or home remedies? Me, too! There are some in this story. For me, that makes it more interesting.

The author has an inviting style of writing. Her pace is even and doesn’t lag. It glides along and smoothly lets the story progress. There are a few twists and turns to make things a touch more exciting.

I enjoyed the hymns and scripture that were included in the novel. They brought the Christian message to life in the story. It was inspiring to watch the spiritual growth of the characters. Genny Gillbrand and Jesse Holden have each had past issues. They have faced prejudice, unfair treatment, and guilt, but God has been with them throughout it all.

I highly recommend this captivating historical, romance, adventure, marriage of convenience book. It would be a nice book club selection. I give it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. A complimentary copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

Did you know there was a gold rush in Georgia that began twenty years before gold was discovered in California? That Georgia gold was purer than any found in the country? Comment below if you did. And I tip my hat to you. I come across many native Georgians who are unaware of this major event in their state’s history.

My first series, The Georgia Gold Series, touched on the Georgia Gold Rush. In the ten years since its release, I’ve written novels set between the Revolutionary War and contemporary times. (I also recently got married. Thus, the name change from Denise Weimer to Denise Farnsworth. I hope you’ll look for my future novels under my new name!) The period of the 1830s is one largely untouched in American history by fiction writers. I always knew I might revisit that decade in more detail. Thus, The Twenty-Niners of the Georgia Gold Rush was born.

Gold was first discovered by white men on Coker Creek in 1827, but it wasn’t until fall of 1828, when Benjamin Parks found a nugget as he returned from filling his cattle’s lick log west of the Chestatee River, that the mining industry exploded in North Georgia. The area was flooded by prospectors who clashed with the native Cherokee people. The land was soon taken from them and divvied up in a lottery of ninety-two districts, with farming plots set at a hundred and sixty acres and gold lots at forty acres. By June of 1832, almost six hundred surveyors from across Georgia were hard at work.

The gold belt stretched from Clarkesville to Canton (the setting of book two), with major concentrations near Dahlonega (the setting of book three). Auraria, located on the mountain ridge between the Etowah and Chestatee rivers, was one of the boom towns that lingered into the twentieth century, although now only a few abandoned buildings remain. Think Wild West before the west went wild. Into this setting I dropped the story of a guilt-haunted surveyor with a dangerous streak of wanderlust and an orphan who’s learned to sing for her life.

Genevieve Gillbard’s neglectful father has died and left her in the care of her guardian, a volatile saloon owner with unwholesome intentions. When she overhears a plot that implicates Charles Martin and one of his employees in a scheme to kidnap her and siphon off a local miner’s gold, Genevieve flees…right into the arms of another man she surely can’t trust.

Blaming himself for the death of his wife, Jesse Holden wants nothing less than being saddled with the wounded songbird he rescued from a drunken miner on his first trip to Auraria. But when he learns that Genny’s guardian is the same man responsible for his wife’s death, he agrees to shelter her to give his sheriff friend, also his former brother-in-law, time to entrap Charles. Neither of them expect to be forced into a marriage in name only—at least until Genny reaches her majority.
