My Thoughts

The first thing I noticed about “Remi” was the beautiful cover. The whimsical expression on her face was just perfect. I first met Remi in an earlier book so I was thrilled to see she had her own now. This is a Christian historical romance about two young women traveling from a Missouri to California via wagon train. Oh the things they see and do on this trip!

Caryl McAdoo is a masterful storyteller. It is easy to see that she researches her stories well, and that they are well planned, organized, and expertly written. This was one such book. Remi didn’t ask to be read. It demanded not to be put down until I had finished it. This is a page turning, quick read.

I was immediately invested in the life of this young woman. From page one I was engaged in the story and with the characters. I felt the turmoil Remi felt. Later I became acquainted with another character and the same thing happened. The writing took me to a place where I could imagine and relate with the people in the book.

Author McAdoo gives us characters that are quirky, lovable, and memorable. Using vivid descriptions she brings them to life and they become our new friends. Well, most of them. She knows how to conjure up a rascal, too. Remi’s mother was no Proverbs 31 woman. Edwina, the bondswoman, was a delightful, unique gal. I really enjoyed her.

The book flowed along at a fast pace. Author McAdoo has certainly done her research. As I read about their journey west, I felt like I was traveling with them. The descriptions were spot on. It was evident the author had done her research on this well planned and well organized book. It was not an easy trip to say the least. The Oregon Trail was full of unknown trials and struggles. I felt sorry for those traveling and the hardships they endured. It made me realize just how easy our life is today.

As in all of this author’s books, I did not need to wonder if this was a Christian fiction. It is plain by reading it that it is. There are plenty of inspirational messages in this Christian, historical, romantic fiction. Humor has been sprinkled into and I actually giggled while I read some parts – “I never dreamed oxen wore shoes.”

I loved the authentic dialog and even learned a new word or two. “….I have this balky tooth.” Not only was it the period but also Edwina was from England that kept the language different in this “lovely” book. Parts of the book did have some modern tones to them, but overall it sounded as though I was back in time.

This book is another gem in author McAdoo’s crown of achievements. It taught me about the Oregon Trail, being on a schooner, and even oxen. I love it when a book I am reading for fun teaches me things! There are life and inspirational lessons on faith, love, trust, guidance, hope, and forgiveness. Relationships between friends, family, and suitors are examples of good and bad and the author offers solutions.

I highly recommend this for anyone that enjoys historical fiction. It is an easy to read, sweet book. I rated it 5 out of 5 stars. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit but I was under no obligation to write a review.

I fell in love with this semi-introvert, lover of literature, highly intelligent young lady, and felt the cover captured her exactly! (Thank you, Chautona Having, my new amazing cover designer! I am so blessed!)

Remi, short for Remington—her middle name as she hates her first name Agnus—is an only child reared by a single mother. Her father left years ago; she’s never met him and decides to go to California where his last letter was postmarked to do just that. It’s a long way from New York City, but better than sailing across the Atlantic.

And she can’t stay there with nowhere to live since her newest stepfather is whisking her mother overseas to his villa in Southern France. They invite her of course, but she hates boats and gets frightfully seasick! It seems the perfect time to go west and meet her Daddy. Riding in a prairie schooner would be a lark!

Researching for the covered wagons heading west led my dear husband to ask if I wanted to drive the Oregon / California Trail. Yes, yes, yes, I assured him! What could be better than seeing the rivers my wagon train had to cross, the amazing sights my characters would experience, and the terrain they navigated for ourselves?

What an opportunity God put before me!

Two weeks and forty-three hundred-plus miles later, we got back home to Clarksville, enthralled with our journey. That trip has made this story so much better for me! I hope it will make it all the better for you, too! I praise and give glory to the Lord for His many blessings and high favor.

Greetings! You made it to my stop on the Inn at Hidden Run by Olivia Newport Celebrate Lit Book Tour. Today I will share my thoughts on the book, information on it and the author, have some words from her, a schedule of the other stops, and information on the giveaway. My Thoughts

The Inn at Hidden Run by author Olivia Newport is a dual time period (contemporary and historical) Christian mystery romance. Author Newport is a grand storyteller. She weaves past and present together flawlessly into one poignant tale.

This is the contemporary tale of genealogist Jillian and her attorney father, Nolan, from Colorado who together trace family histories for people. It is also the tale of a family of doctors and the yellow fever outbreak in Memphis, Tennessee in late 1870’s. The family turned up in research when Jillian began helping Meri, a new girl in town.

This is a very interesting plot. The author did a wonderful job with research and providing an authentic story. I am a historical fiction lover over contemporary, so needless to say, I enjoyed reading that portion just a tad bit more.

Author Newport’s tale pulled at my heartstrings. Parts of it brought tears to my eyes. I was invested in both of the intertwined storied. Her style of writing is easy and unrushed. She allows you to soak in all of the details and transport yourself to a different locale or era, and sometimes both. The characters were well rounded. They had good points and flaws. Some of them felt like new friends and I wants to have coffee with them.

The historical section read very authentic. The characters were likable and genuinely cared for people. I learned a lot about Memphis and the Yellow Fever. Like I said earlier, this is a well researched, organized, planned, and written novel.

The inspirational and faith element is laced throughout this lovely book. Life lessons of forgiveness, grace, finding God’s Will for your life, family, love, caring for ill, and hope are just a few things I found inside the pages.

I definitely would recommend this book. Get a book group together so that you will be able to toss some questions around. Genealogy lovers will enjoy the book as will mystery buffs. Contemporary and Historical fiction will each have a section to like and one to test. It gets a 4 out of 5 stars from me.

Of Family Lines and Family Lore

I suppose it all started in a cemetery.

Once, while a group of relatives were visiting a cemetery, one of my cousins and I wandered off and looked at all sorts of graves, speculating about the names we read and the lives they represented. We were duly scolded both for separating from our families, which caused some consternation, and for being disrespectful—though I think the second accusation was a false one!

Just because we were young children didn’t mean we were disrespecting the dead. Quite the opposite. We were respecting lives long forgotten with our curiosity about who they were and what legacies they left.

These days a lot of people are interested in genealogy. Entire TV series spin around the theme, and DNA kits show up in Christmas stockings. Lost branches of family trees find the main trunk—sometimes with big surprises.

The Printed Letter Bookshop by Katherine Reay Celebrate Lit Book Tour and Giveaway

My Thoughts

As a former Christian Bookstore owner I was delighted when I heard about this book. I actually got a bit giddy when I received it in the mail. This contemporary Christian romance is centered around books, a bookstore, and three women friends. How could it be anything other than fabulous?

Katherine Reay is a new to me author. I enjoyed her style of writing. The point of view changes for each of the three main characters, but it was done flawlessly. I actually enjoyed it. The story flowed at an even, natural pace. It didn’t lag or feel rushed. Conversations sounded genuine. There were some twists and turns to make it interesting.

The characters were easy to become engaged with and were identifiable. They were well rounded with quirks and all. The author vividly describes them and they become new friends. At times I felt their sadness, pain, and joy.

I was immediately invested since it was about a bookshop. However, the book opens with a funeral and takes a bit before it gets to a happy place. I was getting impatient and wanted to hurry through the story to get to the bookshop!

Madeline inherits her Aunt Maddie’s bookshop where she helped as a girl. Then something happened between her father and aunt making them estranged. We meet Janet and Claire. They are her friends or ladies working for her and are unique in their own ways.

It is a very realistic tale. Author Reay has done her research well. This book is well planned, well organized, and written exceptionally well. It was light on the spirit content for me, but it had great life lessons for hope, forgiveness, friendship, mercy, grace, and love. All in all it was an encouraging book.

I definitely recommend this book to all women. It has an entertaining story. Any reader should enjoy a book about books and a bookstore. It is a cozy, quick read that made me giggle a time or two. The romance is sweet. I rated it a 4 out of 5 stars. A copy was provided from Celebrate Lit, but I was under no obligation to write a review.

Don’t you love bookshops?

Every time I walk into a bookstore, it feels like a rainbow cracked open and rained a kaleidoscope of light, life and possibilities before me. I find worlds within the world and a call to adventure.

Each bookshop tells a different story. It tells of its loyal beloved customer base. It reflects the personality of its owner and staff. It carries the aura of the stories it offers to us.

Tongues of Fire Celebrate Lit Book and Giveaway

Greetings from my stop of the Celebration Lit Book tour for Tongues of Fire, 50 days of celebrating Pentecost devotional book. There is information about the book, tour stops, and Giveaway. Don’t forget to enter!

My Thoughts

Tongues of Fire is a 50 day devotional celebrating Pentecost. The book opens and asks why we don’t celebrate Pentecost? We celebrate Christmas and Easter. It goes on to explain the importance of Pentecost and the Holy Spirit.

There are fifty devotions to help better understand Pentecost by giants of faith both classic and contemporary. I knew most of them but a few were new to me. The devotions are all different and inspiring.

A great number of the devotions are about speaking in tongues. This Methodist raised gal is unfamiliar with that. I am open-minded and have heard various thoughts on it. Another topic given a lot of days was healing.

Some of the devotions spoke to me more than others. I agree that we all need to welcome and accept the Holy Spirit into our lives. Jesus sent Him to us for a reason. One devotion said “when you receive the power of the Holy Spirit, you become someone you could never be on your own”. I totally agree.

Another devotional said “Simply by paying attention to what He is doing and cooperating with Him, we come to understand God better. Who doesn’t want to know God better? I certainly do.

This was a devotional that is meant to be read over a period of 50 days. I read it in just a few days in order to write this review. Some of the days spoke straight to me and I was inspired. Other days were hard to understand. I felt chastised in a few places rather than enlightened.

I did not receive answers to some of my questions. It is a hard to read at times devotional and not exactly uplifting. It felt more scholarly. Scripture is plentiful. This is definitely biblically based.

I would recommend this for anyone wanting to delve deeper into the Holy Spirit and Pentecost. It is good for learning a little about speaking in tongues. I would not recommend it for a young person, simply because I had trouble in some parts. I rated it 3 out of 5 stars. Celebrate provided an e-book but I was under no obligation to write a review.

My Thoughts:

More to Love is a charming reimagining of Pride and Prejudice by author Robin Helm. I was caught in its web immediately and had a difficult time putting it down. This Christian Regency novel was whimsical and took to to England where I made new friends.

The writing style was almost poetic with authentic words and phrases. I loved it. It flowed like sweet prose. The dialogues were well done and I was enchanted with them. Characters were well defined and rounded with flaws as well as good points. I was invested in their lives. The morals, manners, and etiquette are so endearing from that era.

The romance is sweet, clean, and fast. Personally I would have liked to have seen it a little slower and longer, but maybe editing changed it. There were a few twists and turns making it fun to read and a page turner.

The spiritual content seems light. Each chapter opens with scripture or an appropriate inspirational quote. Elizabeth does mention God a few times. The messages of forgiveness, hope, self acceptance, bettering oneself, trust, treating someone as you would like to be treated, and love are all in this sweet novel.

At the beginning Lizzie is teased and snubbed because she is overweight. She quickly begins to exercise (walk) twice each day and cut down drastically on her eating. Wouldn’t it be nice it the main man loved her anyway? Or that she did not have to make such drastic efforts to change. Her family was supportive and concerned about her health which is an important thing for all girls.

This is a delightful serving of romance which I devoured in one setting. It was just lovely. I highly recommend it. I was provided a copy by Celebrate Lit but I was not required to write a review. I rated this 4 out of 5 stars.

Have you ever been judged on the basis of your appearance – what you weigh, how you dress, how you wear your hair or do your makeup? I am a professional dieter, and I have been on all of them. I lose, and I gain it back. I know the lengths a woman will go to after she overhears remarks about how she looks, so I relate to Elizabeth in More to Love in a way that’s a bit beyond my comfort zone.

Another aspect of this book which is personal is that I chose to base a supporting character on a wonderful, Christian lady at my church (with her permission). Mrs. Donna Bailey has been a constant encouragement to me in regards to my writing. She often gives me beautiful sugar cookies she painstakingly decorates with holiday themes. Mrs. Bailey is the housekeeper and dessert cook at Longbourn, and she helps Elizabeth through thick and thin, so to speak.

My Thoughts

“Past Forward” by Author Chautona Havig is a contemporary Christian novel laced with romance, suspense, intrigue, inspiration and a bit of humor. I was immediately drawn into the story. The book held my attention all the way through this whimsical page turning delightful read.

The author has a lovely way with words. They flow eloquently from her mind to paper at a nice pace. The story didn’t lag or feel rushed. It was just right. The vivid descriptions took me inside Willow’s unique life. I wanted to read more about it. At times I forgot Willow was a modern day lady.

Author Havig has done an exemplary job with these characters. Willow is so likable and I became engaged with her immediately. The more I read the more invested I became. I felt her emotions through the writing. Great job, Ms. Havig!

The story has been well thought and organized. It taught me things I didn’t know. Willow’s life wasn’t the norm. It a lifestyle many wish for and few can handle. Sometimes it seemed there was a disaster waiting to happen around ever corner.

The inspirational message is there, and I enjoyed seeing the character’s growing faith. There is sweet romance and mystery. Anyone will love this captivating novel.

I highly recommend it. Even though it is a contemporary book, fans of historical (pioneer) fiction will devour this masterful serving from wordsmith Chautona Havig. A book club could find a lot to discuss. I loved it. It gets a 5 out of 5 stars from me. Celebrate Lit provided a copy but I was under no obligation to write a review.

HOW DID MY WEIRD HIGH SCHOOL YEARS INSPIRE THIS BOOK?

December 1985. The time had finally come. After two months of living in a run-down motel in Rosamond, California, we were finally moving to our own place. Seventeen miles away.

Just off Highway 58, outside Mojave, California (about the place that Alton Gansky’s, Distant Memory opens), a huge billboard loomed. For the curious, it’s still there today. Aqueduct City.

For the record, there was no city. There still isn’t. Just a dirt road or three. Oh, and the aqueduct. In fact, that’s eventually how we got our water—stole it from the California aqueduct.

But I’m getting ahead of myself.

At the edge of all those parcels lay our new land. Twenty-two acres of desert sand, creosote, sage, and a tiny, baby Joshua tree at the end of our long, U-shaped dirt driveway.

I took out that sucker with my first attempt at backing down the drive. It looked like a snake had slithered back and forth across the sandy strip of cleared dirt, and somehow I managed to run over the foot-high tree. It wasn’t often I managed to shock my mother speechless. That was one time. I now have mad back-upping skills. Thought you oughtta know.

On that land, my parents put an 18’ travel trailer.

We hauled in water in 55-gallon drum barrels—first from a friend’s house and later from that aqueduct. It was several miles closer. One of those barrels ended up on top of the trailer for showers. The water pressure depended on how full that sucker was. Navy showers? Ever had one? It goes like so:

Turn on water.
Make one slow turn under the water to get all wet.
Turn it off.
Lather up.
Shampoo hair.
Turn on water.
Turn off.
Work conditioner into hair.
Turn on water.
Turn off.
Get out.
Try to stop your teeth from chattering.

For the record, that chattering is no joke. When it’s twenty degrees out there, water gets cold. And we had no way to heat it.

Our plumbing also included a shovel. For… um… other plumbing needs. Winter was the worst and the best time for the call of nature. Worst because, well, 40 mph winds and twenty-degree weather. Best, because no snakes.

We used Coleman propane lanterns, a propane refrigerator (that sat outside our door), and eventually, a gas-powered generator. Once a week, Dad would fire that thing up so I could iron my church clothes. #darkages

For the curious, summer was blistering hot.

No fans (except for stiff cardboard we used arm-power to operate). No air conditioner. Not even a swamp cooler. Mom and I would go into town and read at the library when we just couldn’t take another minute in 112-degree desert heat. She’d drive me to Lancaster so I could go sit in an air-conditioned movie theater and watch another movie. If it came out in 1986 or 1987 and wasn’t pure smut, I probably saw it. Out of self-preservation.

Before long, I’d been relegated to the “porch.” That consisted of a redwood lattice “patio” enclosure in front of the trailer door. (For those who haven’t figured it out yet, I was the dictionary definition of “trailer trash” in some people’s books.) That space was eight feet wide and sixteen feet long.

I had a twin bed out there. When winter came, dad made sleeping out there more bearable by heating huge rocks in one of those 55-gallon drum barrels and wrapping them in old quilts. That went at the foot of my bed to keep my feet warm.

If only the wind hadn’t blown sand into my hair every night…

What does all of this have to do with Past Forward?

Just this. People have often asked why Willow would choose to live without electricity. Some have said you couldn’t live only five miles outside of town and be so isolated and reclusive.

I disagree.

We did it. By choice. Because it’s who my father is. And of all of my characters, Kari Finley, Willow’s mother, is the most like my father. The way Kari taught Willow? That’s exactly how Dad used to teach me—by making it a natural part of life.

I didn’t know it when I wrote the series, but Past Forward really does show exactly what kind of life my father would have chosen to live if he’d ever really considered it. The self-sustaining work, the emphasis on beauty, the isolation—all of it shows the kind of man I call Dad.

If you’d asked me as a kid what I thought of living out there in Mojave, I would have said I hated it. Not only that, I would have believed myself. But if you’d talked to me for a while, you would have figured out that I said that because I was expected to. No one thinks you’ll like living with almost nothing, in the middle of nowhere, especially as a teenager.

Looking back, though, I actually I liked it. Dad. Mom. Me. And Boozer, our dog. I’d tell you about her, but that’s a story for another day. Yeah, I liked my life there “out on the property,” as we called it.

Except for the Mojave green rattlesnakes. Not a fan of those. Not then or today.

Just sayin’.

Strike the Mark Book Tour & Giveaway by Celebrate Lit

My Thoughts

Strike The Mark is a no nonsense book on prayer. Its subtitle says “Powerfully targeted prayers for victory and breakthrough.” This nonfiction book says “prayers that strike the mark are specific prayers authorized by the Holy Spirit and endowed with divine power to accomplish the will of God in your life and for the needs of the world.” Wow, heavy reading here.

The author included scripture as well as person stories to make his point. I particularly liked that each chapter was closed with a prayer. His writing was concise and for the most part easy to understand. However, at times I felt like I was in a theology class and my mind wandered.

There are twelve chapter in this book. Dealing with a wide variety of topics such as confessing our sins and praying for others there are some chapters that touched me more than others. I did learn a lot but sometimes I did not personally agree with his line of thinking.

I would recommend this book on prayer. It would be perfect for a small group on prayer. There is much to ponder and discuss after reading Strike the Mark. I rated it 4 out of 5 stars. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit but I was under no obligation to write a review.

Moments We Forget Celebrate Lit Book Tour and Giveaway

Welcome to my stop on the Celebrate Lit Book Tour for Author Beth K. Vogt’s “Moments We Forget” novel. I have lots of information for you on the book, series, author, and giveaway so be sure to read to the end and register to win!

My Thoughts

“Moments We Forget” is a contemporary women’s Christian novel. This is my first to read by author Beth K. Vogt and I quite liked her style. She writes at a steady pace. Nothing is rushed and yet it isn’t slow or sluggish. It is Book 2 in the Thatcher Sisters Series but I managed it okay without having read Book 1 yet. However, I wish I had read Book 1 first.

Her characters are down to earth. They are well defined and easy to imagine. In this Book there are three sisters with three distinct, unique personalities. Vogt gives voice to each one and they naturally come to life on her pages. I have one sister and always wanted another. This novel made me wish for even more.

The women are still grieving the loss of their fourth sister from years ago. Besides that each sister has her own particular trial or burden to bear. This book addresses grief, family, trials, death, cancer, adoption, infertility, and God. The subjects are timely and relevant to women today.

Author Vogt wrote in such a way that I became emotionally invested in the story. I wanted peace among the sisters. It was easy to identify with them. A text from their mother made me chuckle. How many times had I written one like that, received one, or been the cause for one?

This book has stayed with me even though I have already started another. It was an engaging book and I became interested immediately. At times it was hard to read yet I could not put it down. Tears rolled down my cheeks many times while turning the pages.

The author has done a great job researching, planning, and writing this tale of sisterhood and family. The Christian message is there, too. She has shown readers that family dynamics are difficult at best and unlike any treasure ever found.

I definitely would recommend this book to any woman. It is 418 pages long and the ARC that I received did not have Discussion Questions. This series would be perfect for a women’s reading group. There is a lovely journey to the Lord written in it. I rated this 4 out of 5 stars. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit but I was under no obligation to write a positive review. These are my own thoughts.

I’m launching Moments We Forget, book two in the Thatcher Sisters series, and I’ve just turned in the final book in the series. I’d love to share book three’s title with you, but I don’t know what it is. (Of course, book three might have a final title by the time you read this—that’s part of the fun of prerelease deadlines.)

One thing I do know: the theme of “Little Women gone wrong” is woven through all of the books . . . thanks to the Thatcher sisters: Payton, Pepper, Jillian, and Johanna.

Sisters, be they real or imaginary, can be complicated.

Of course, there are sisters who have close relationships. They “get” each other and love doing life together.

But then there are the sister relationships that are like mismatched socks. Or those expensive jeans you loved in the store, but when you bring them home, they never quite live up to those moments in the dressing room.

Such are the Thatcher sisters. Johanna, Jillian, Payton, and Pepper grew up in the same family. They’re all tall. They love Broncos football and board games. But in so many ways their lives are like different movies because they each made different choices. Choices that changed and separated them. Moments We Forget continues to explore whether the Thatcher sisters can find a way to understand each other enough to bridge the distance between them.

This contemporary 300 page novel is not a light read. There are deep issues of helping others, faith, family, and sickness discussed. This is a thought provoking book that I had to read a little at a time and then ponder. It made me emotional and sad in a lot of places.

It is the first book I have read by author McGowan and I had a little trouble following it. It didn’t flow as smoothly as most books that I’ve read. It is Book two in a series which might cause the problem for me.

For this Grandmother the character we’re too eccentric with their brightly colored hair, Mohawk cut, tattoos, and piercings. Even some of the conversation sounded off to me. The characters were vividly described.

The author tackled tough, present day issues in her Christian novel. This is a well organized and researched book. The storyline has parenting issues, mental illness, homelessness, PTSD, and facing trials in life. Like I said earlier, this is not a light read.

The people, how they lived, and all of the tough issues all stayed with me. It made me see how much help certain people need and how blessed others are. At the end notes the author states that one in four people in the world will be affected by mental or neurological disorders in their lifetime. That is a staggering number.

Inspirational messages are included with the rough issues. Letting the Holy Spirit work in your life, trusting in God, and having faith are mentioned as crucial. It is refreshing to have Christian messages in a book filled with so many problems.

I would recommend this book to a younger age group than mine, although the book has made an impact and stuck with me. It needs to be read in a group so it may be discussed. I would recommend reading Book One first.

Writing About Tough Subjects—with Hope

I began writing over twenty years ago. And technically I wrote long before that as well. But those pieces were ‘just for fun.’ However, as I look back on my short stories, blog posts, and now my published work, there’s a definite theme: overcoming. Overcoming childhood abuse, overcoming an abusive marriage, overcoming loss—physical and emotional. And those overcoming stories were not about overcoming through our own strength, which is so often flawed and lacking, but by relying on the One who can heal us from every wrong, every hurt, and every loss.

After my first novel, Jasmine, I asked my readers what they’d like me to focus on in my next books—what subjects were overlooked in fiction today? The overwhelming consensus was adoption, loss, and mental illness.

As a contemporary fiction author, I stay current on social issues, so that wasn’t a huge jump for me. My readers saw a gap, and I did, too.

Not that it’s wrong to simply read for entertainment—shoot, I do! But I’ve always loved gripping stories with people I could identify with who were overcoming obstacles I’d faced, or watched a loved one face—stories that offer real hope in the face of tragedy.

So began my journey. In book one of this series, Hold the Light, I wrote about sight loss and adoption. I wrote about best friends who were solidly there for each other in the face of great hardship and pain. And in book two, Shine the Light, I’m doing the same—with a twist.

There’s a lack of representation and writing concerning mental illness and how it affects the sufferer and those around them. There is a stigma that is significantly changing, but it’s something we’re still hesitant to discuss. Myself and many I know are deeply touched by this issue, and I think we’re long past due letting those that suffer from mental illness and their families know that they are not alone. Or if they are, that they don’t have to be.

Book two, Shine the Light, is about Shannon’s life. Her love for the downtrodden, the lost, and the injured. Her passion for the underdog. How she became the stalwart friend she is to Amber in Hold the Light, the obstacles she’s overcome, and those she has to continue to grapple through with God’s help.

As with all of my books, I’ve vetted this story with people who have faced these situations and am very careful to respect their stories as well as staying true to my characters. I hope you’ll dive in and find Shannon to be a deep and real and identifiable character. I hope you’ll discover in her a friend.

I know you’ll grow to love her as I do.

Shadow Among Sheaves Celebrate Lit Book Tour and Giveaway

Today I am pleased to tell you about a remarkable book that I just read. “Shadow Among Sheaves” written by author Naomi Stephens is a beautiful retelling of the biblical story of Ruth. This one is set in 1850’s England and is an exquisite novel. It is one of my favorite “modern” day takes on Ruth’s story that I have ever read.

Author Stephens has written a realistic retelling in this book. It makes sense. Her beautifully written work grabbed me and guided me inside its pages. I was no longer in my comfy chair reading but in England with Rena, her mother-in-law Nell, and Lord Barric. From the very beginning I was invested in this superbly written tale. It is a page turning, reader’s treasure.

Not only did I read the book, I lived it. I felt the snubs, was hurt by the insults, and understood the pain. The women had a hard time and I wanted to offer help. The author took me on an emotional roller coaster ride with this book. I made new friends and found people I did not like. Even ones I liked had moments where they were human and failed.

A review for this stunning book could be summed up in one word. . . WOW! It is amazing. This is a very well researched, well planned, and extremely well written book. It needs to be a movie. Yes, it is that great.

The characters are all believable. They are well rounded with character flaws as well as redeeming attributes. The scenery and daily life are vividly described. I easily imagined I was gleaning in the fields, trying new foods, and seeing new things just as Rena.

The story is a bit predictable if you know your Bible but it also has some twists and surprises. It has a good faith message and deals with tough modern day issues such as prejudice, bullying, pride, family, forgiveness, respect, and social standing.

There is so much packed into its pages. I learned historical facts about India and England. There was mystery, intrigue, romance, and discussions on placing priorities, family relationships, charity, gossip, and friendship.

I will be watching for more books from author Naomi Stephens. You should, too. This one was phenomenal. I highly recommend it. I rated it 5 out of 5. A copy was provided by the publisher but I was under no obligation to write a review. These are my own, honest words.

She smiled, stepping closer and placing her hand on the horse’s wet snout. Samson was a pretty beast with wide, ponderous eyes and a few splotches of gray around his nose. The soft puff of air Samson snorted into her palm brought a delighted smile to her lips, and she gasped as he bowed his neck to nuzzle his nose against her stomach. She felt her smile leap into a grin. It was a delightful change, to feel joy so deep it finally showed.

Barric circled around Samson to stand beside her, his hands never leaving the reins. “He’s fond of you,” he remarked as Samson dropped his snout against her hip.

“Unsurprising, I suppose. Though he could also be searching you for a carrot.”

Surprised to hear Lord Barric speak so teasingly, and pleased by the gentle light she found in his otherwise tired eyes, Rena laughed her faint agreement. “That will teach me to come empty-handed, won’t it?”

Their smiles both dropped as a young, lanky stable hand came rushing out to take Samson, and Barric relinquished his hold on the reins, nodding his silent thanks.

As soon as the stable boy had disappeared with Samson, Bar¬ric glanced back at Rena. “Are you going home?” he asked, nodding toward the dusty road looping down the hill to William’s house.

She stepped back, realizing she had dawdled longer than she’d first intended. “Yes,” she answered. “I often come this way to avoid the other workers.”

“Might I walk with you?” He turned to hang his whip on a peg. “Just a short stretch of the road?”

Stunned by his request, and a bit suspicious of his motive, she nonetheless nodded. “Yes, of course.”

Barric drew up beside her, his even strides betraying no unease, though he was silent for some time as they made their way down the golden-colored hill.

“You have seemed tired these past few days,” he observed. Rena did not bother to deny it. She’d been working hard to keep up with the others, as Barric had told her she must, and felt wearier for it. She had tried to split her days in half, the mornings spent binding sheaves with the women and the afternoons spent picking for her own stores, but the work was backbreaking, and, as he had already pointed out once before, she was not used to hard labor. “I realize I haven’t really asked you how you are settling in,” he went on.

“Perhaps you’ve been too busy provoking me,” she answered before she could stop herself.

Barric’s eyebrow inched up as he slanted an approving smirk down at her. “Perhaps.”

Rena cursed her honest tongue. She must have been more tired than she thought, to speak so freely to a man of title. “I have been well,” she tried again, a bit more diplomatically. “The house suits us, if that is what you are asking.”

“The people here do not speak to you unkindly?”

“The people do not speak to me at all.” She had meant to sound casual, unaffected, but heard the hurt in her own voice she hadn’t been able to weed out. As Barric’s expression tightened, she hastened to amend, “Except for you, my lord. Of course. And the Wilmots.”

“They are good people,” he agreed quietly. “And will you be coming with them to the festival this evening?”

She hesitated. According to Alice, harvest home was a yearly tra¬dition, a night of raucous drinking and dancing to celebrate the close of the harvest. All of Abbotsville would be there—landowners, stew-ards, even tenant farmers and common laborers. But Rena was none of those things, and she and Barric both knew it.

“Come,” Barric teased, “do not tell me you are afraid to go. I would never have thought it of you.”

“I am not afraid,” she insisted. “I just had not thought about it.”

At her defensive tone, he smiled—a true smile—one that pinched the corners of his eyes and pressed grooves along the outer edges of his mouth. “You ought to come,” he decided. “Everyone in Abbotsville is welcome, and many are the men who would feel lucky to dance with you.”

But, of course, Lord Barric knew this was not true. The men in his fields regarded her mostly with contempt and made no secret of it— they would not count themselves at all lucky to dance with her. Was Lord Barric trying to offer her words of comfort? Or was he trying to convey a message?

Did he want to dance with her?

This was hardly a safe question, and so she asked another. “Do you dance, Lord Barric?”

When he met her gaze, so direct, she was all the more glad she had not stammered in her reply. The man walked a dangerous line whenever he deigned to speak to her. Far too close, she’d think, and then stern enough to cool her blood with a word.

He surprised her with another smile, this one a faint twist at the corner of his lips. “Perhaps you would have to come to find out.”
