Have you heard of the Shakers? They were a religious sect in Kentucky a couple of hours from where I live. Appropriately named Shaker Village is still there today offering historical tours and insight into this unique way of life. This is far different than Amish. They are set apart from the world but in a much different way. Kentucky author Ann Gabhart has written some novels about the Shakers. I love them all and anything else she writes. Her down home style lures me in within a few pages and I am hooked.

Her book “The Innocent, A Novel” was one of those fabulous books. I was invested within a few pages of reading this 402 page paperback. It was easy to become emotionally invested in Carlyn Kearney and her big dog, Asher, as the author vividly described their life in troubled Kentucky. As I read through the trials and tribulations this post civil war woman endured, I kept thinking that this would make a great movie. I wanted to watch this book! It had history, suspense, romance, mystery, information on the Shaker religion, a good looking sheriff, pretty leading lady, a massive dog, villain, and more. Kentucky always makes a nice setting for a movie, too.

Carlyn’s husband has been gone in the Civil War for a long time with no word. She and her dog are left to take care of their cabin and homestead. They live near the Shaker Village. With twists and turns things happen and she must take shelter there. In this story you will find heroes, villains, mystery, adventure, romance, intrigue, action, and inspiration. Wow! All packed into one book.

The author took this reader to the Shaker Village on a trip that seemed real. I learned about their views on worship, work, meals, and marriage. They certainly have strange ideas on marriage. The story was heavily sprinkled with scripture and a good inspirational message to “just pray”. The characters were well described and relatable. Some became friends and others were downright unlikeable. At points I chuckled and others I teamed up. Best of all were the twists, turns, and surprises.

I expected to like this book since I like Christian historical fiction, but I loved it. The descriptive language, dialogue and colloquialism used by Ann Gabhart made a smooth, enjoyable read. The well researched, well organized, and well written story made a book I could not put down. If you haven’t read anything by this talented author you should give one of her books a try. She has more Shaker novels, some other fiction, and a cozy mystery series. I rated this a 5 out of 5 stars. Anyone who enjoys Christian fiction, historical or romance, even Amish or Quaker will enjoy this book. I highly recommend it.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–His good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2

Read a Book Monday: English Lessons by Andrea Lucado

“English Lessons, The Crooked Path of Growing Toward Faith” is a 221 page Christian Living hardcover book by author Andrea Lucado. Before you google her, yes, she is the daughter of minister and author Max Lucado. Author Andrea is a gifted writer like her daddy. Her debut book “English Lessons” attests to that. It was a delight to read and sincerely moved me.

Author Andrea has a really pleasant writing style for me. Her words and sentences flowed seamlessly. I felt like I was playing at church with her or riding in England. She definitely is talented. This book is about her life, but the way she wrote it I felt like I was reading a novel or at least most of the time. It was never boring. Her book is open, honest, humorous, and inspirational. It touches on things most people have thought or questioned at one time or another in their lives. Strong faith, wavering faith, family, friends, being away from home, raised in church, salvation, becoming an adult, purpose and identity, does God exist, truly knowing God are a few things discussed. Have you thought about any of those things? Me, too. The author is a gifted writer. She drew me in quickly, and I was invested in her story, her life. Her love of God shines through her book. The struggles and subjects were real, very real, and relatable.

In “English Lessons” the author discusses going to Oxford to school and writes about her time in England. It obviously made an impact on her. She tells her story transparently. We hear of her triumphs and trials. Even though her father is a well-known minister, it doesn’t mean she is perfect. As she grew up she became a bit rebellious. While she might have changed, God never does. He is always the same, a lesson we all need to retain. God is always there and always the same. We are the ones that change or step away. A quote from her book that has stuck with me is ” Sooner or later we have to say goodbye to that person we were before.” Read the book and think about that.

I would highly recommend this book. Anyone would enjoy it and glean something from it. It is fabulous. The ideal audience would be early adults because that is the author’s age in her memoir. That’s just the ideal age not the target age. Old or new, man or woman, anyone will be inspired and encouraged when reading “English Lessons”. Readers’ faith will be strengthened and moods lightened. Walks will become closer to God. It is that good. It would be perfect for a book club or small group. Just note, it has no discussion questions. I rated it a 5 out of 5 stars. An ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) was provided for my honest review. The opinions in this review are my honest ones.

Revelation 1:8 – “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.”

The book will be on sale Tuesday, May 2, 2017, but if you preorder before that you will some free items!

Read a Book Monday: A Heat Most Certain is a Most Certain 5+ Stars

Are you looking for a good Christian novel? One that is delightful, thought provoking, entertaining, enlightening, and just plain great. I have one for you. This is not Christian fluff but a hardy serving. It is Book One in a series and Book Two, A Love So True is releasing soon.

“A Heart Most Certain” by author Melissa Jagears is Christian romance novel published by Bethany House. It is the first in her Teaville Moral Society, and I was captivated quickly. It is by far the best one I have read by this author.

Jagears is a genuine storyteller. She has woven and developed a tale that interested me immediately. It didn’t take pages or chapters to get into this book. I was into it immediately. Her main characters are believable and relatable. I found myself trying to mimic some of their movements and gestures myself. Descriptions are not overly long and boring, but enough to put me in the time and place. Conversations flowed effortlessly. I would repeat a line sassily from the book as I tilted my head. The heroine, Lydia King, is a fledgling Christian in a women’s group, The Teaville Moral Society, at her church. This Society marches against the Red Light District in town. They help on their terms for what they deem worthy only. Lydia finds herself assigned the monumental task of obtaining a donation from one of the town’s richest men, Nicholas Lowe. Lydia is promised to Sebastian Little, son of the mayor. While Lydia and Nicholas have a relationship built on getting a contribution from him, sparks begin to fly amidst frustration and irritation. Slowly Lydia begins to learn precious lessons from Nicholas, better ones than she has learned in her moral society. He in turn learns from her. There are many supporting characters. The author uses them effectively.

This book is filled with everything I love in a Christian novel. First and foremost it has great messages. This author clearly knows her Bible and loves God. I love scripture in a novel. The inspiration in the book encouraged me and warmed my heart. Using scripture, biblical stories and parables the author hits us not only on our head to think about these things, but she hits us in our heart where we feel things. My favorite line was “So if a whole lot of nice people can’t keep you in church, then you can’t use a whole lot of bad people to keep you out.”

This book had a great romance. I could smile, blush, or cry with Lydia. I could relate to her. She loved books and to read. Her heart would lead her but others might pull her away from what she knew was right. She was often torn between taking care of family or doing for herself. She was a people pleaser but she was determined.

The men were opposites. There was competition between Sebastian and Nicholas. Sebastian wanted arm candy since it was a campaign year. A Christian pretty wife on his arm would help him win. He liked Lydia despite what his parents thought. Nicholas was hard and guarded until Lydia cracked his shell. He led a secret life and was judged unjustly by his church congregation. No one ever saw him tithe or give to anything. He appreciated Lydia but unjustly judged her also. They taught each other a lot. The author knows how to create tension and purity in her love stories. She is a professional in writing breathtaking kisses.

It had a great plot, adventure, suspense, mystery, drama, inspiration, and even humor. There were historical things I didn’t know. This story was complete, but There is a second book. Jagears is a master at making me laugh “”Though I’m certain I’d have an easier time convincing a turkey to crawl onto our table and stuff itself for Thanksgiving than getting Mr. Lowe to hand me a penny.”

I would highly recommend “A Heart Most Certain” to anyone. It would make a great book club read or women’s study group book. There are discussion questions in the back. It has so much substance in it that readers will want to talk to others about this wonderful book. I rated it a 5 out of 5 stars only because there was no 10! Get ready for book two! A copy of the book was provided by Bethany House for my honest review.

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Matt. 7:1-2

Read a Book Monday, “The Women of Easter” by Liz Curtis Higgs

Liz Curtis Higgs is one of my favorite people. Not only is she a gifted author but she sincerely loves people. She has a heart to encourage women and does it flawlessly. I had the honor of hearing her speak a few times and speaking with her myself. Her love for Abba shines clearly through her. Liz is the real deal.

In her book “The Women of Easter – Encounter the Savior with Mary of Bethany, Mary of Nazareth, and Mary Magdalene” she explores three women and how their lives changed because of Jesus. They all happen to be named Mary. Each have a great story.

This small hard cover book is eight chapters long. It begins with a thought provoking introduction “A Season of Grace” and ends with study questions, notes, and information about the author. This is a Lenten book but could be read at any time. It is a book to absorb and revisit. It stayed with me long after I finished it.

I was hooked immediately. It took me zero time to get invested in this inspirational book. That happened on page one. I love the author’s personal style of writing. It’s like a conversation with me. She made the three Marys relatable and I felt what they were feeling. I was sad and then thrilled when I read about Lazarus. I understood the human side of Jesus better through them and His deity. He was God. I laughed at times and teared up just as many. I got angry and could hardly read the words at times. I knew the story about Jesus’s suffering but it always hurt. It always will.

In this book I found a different view of Easter. I read about the women that followed Jesus. This book told how He changed their lives. How they loved and served Him. I wanted to be part of that elite group. I wanted to walk with the Lord, see His miracles, and listen to His stories.

As the words took me closer to the cross, I found myself grower stronger in my faith. Yes, Jesus did not deserve this, and yes, He did this for everyone. Even me. Tears fell from my eyes as I kept reading. I nodded my head when the Roman soldier said “this was certainly God’s Son”. After the tomb was opened and Jesus appeared, I rejoiced! It made me smile, really down deep in my heart, when I read Mary Magdalene was given the great honor of telling the disciples that Jesus was now alive. A woman was given such a great job.

In 193 pages I had become friends with three woman that strengthened my faith. Their stories are remarkable and unforgettable. Jesus is the one that is the heart of thus book. He is the true meaning of Easter. He is life and hope. I wanted to read more, more, more. Liz is so good at what she does. She is a gifted author, encourager, and glorifies our Lord. Don’t miss this uplifting book on three spectacular women of Easter and their Lord Jesus Christ. You will be blessed beyond measure. I rated this a 5 out of 5 stars.

“Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.” Luke 24:24 NIV

Read a Book Monday: “Jehovah Jireh, God Provides” by Mary J. Nelson

If you are looking for an encouraging book for the rest of Lent, I have it.  Recently I read a devotional that was extremely moving.  It was one that made me think and reaffirmed that God does provide for His children.  He provides for all of our needs, physical, emotional, and spiritual.  All we have to do is ask.  You will love this inspiring book.  It is amazing.

“Jehovah Jireh: The God Who Provides” by author Mary J. Nelson is a 254 page paperback devotional by Barbour Publishing with thick, durable pages. This book is meant to be read and last. Divided into sixty short chapters this is a wonderful book for daily inspiration. The chapters have a story, about a person, some Biblical, followed by a devotional or life application study on what this means to us and how to apply it to our lives. Concluding with a prayer on the chapter’s subject, this gives readers time to bring what they have read and learned to God for His help in their own lives.

This is the first book I have read by author Nelson and I loved it. She did a fantastic job of researching and organizing her work. Her book brings glory to God, is easy to read and understand, is relatable, interesting, deep, and encouraging. Everything a reader needs in a devotional or Christian book is in it.

The topics are abundant and will certainly touch most everyone. Reading about trusting God, forgiveness, burdens, trials, contentment, hope, and rejoicing are just a few things the reader will find in this gem of a book. The author gives multiple stories that Jehovah Jireh, our God does indeed provide for us, always. The devotions are thought provoking and will stay with you long after you close the book. You will be encouraged and ready to face your day with a smile.

I would highly recommend this book. It is excellent. Not only will you delve into scripture, you will be moved, enlightened, and encouraged. This is a book that will help you draw closer to Jehovah. I rated it a 5 out of 5 stars. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.

“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.”  Matt. 6:33 NLT

Read a Book Monday: “Choosing Grace” by author Cheri Swalwell

“Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.” True, how true. Where would I be without grace? Lost. “I once was lost but now am found…” God’s grace is far reaching an abundant, as ours should be. This devotional is one of the best that I have read on grace. It impacted my life and made me realize grace should be given as well as received. Read my review and then the book. You will be blessed.

Spoken from the Heart: Choosing Grace by author Cheri Swalwell is an inspirational book designed to help readers deepen their understanding about grace. It stirs the mind to think about grace and ponder where grace is in our lives. Not just grace received from God and others but also grace given to others. In the beginning of her book, the author cites Merriam-Webster’s definition of grace as “a virtue coming from God,…an act or instance of kindness, courtesy, or clemency.” Clemency is defined as mercy. I know God gives grace and mercy, but do I? Right from the beginning the author had my wheels turning as she stepped on my toes. Ouch!

The author takes readers into her personal life as she talks about grace, her life word for a year from God. She tells tales on herself and takes us through issues many of us have tackled ourselves. Sharing our opinions, yelling, temper tantrums, being happy for others rather than sad for ourselves, worrying, questioning God’s timing are just a sampling. She talks about family issues, health, and finances. She explores why bad things happen to good people. All of this packed into 120, bible based pages on grace. What a blessing this book was to this reader! It was refreshing and gave me a new outlook on some old issues.

Her stories provided much for me to examine in my own life. Am I blessing others with grace? Am I aware when others are blessing me. Am I aware of God’s grace to me? There are so many Days in the book that stood out as extremely inspiring it was hard to decide what to share. Probably my favorite and the one that I found most moving was Day 29, “Thank You Before”. It encourages readers to thank God before the miracle happens. To believe that you will receive something from God and praise Him before it happens.

This powerful book is divided into 32 Days so it would make a great devotional if you are able to hold off and read it one day at a time. Not so with this reader. I found it so inspiring that I wanted to keep reading. This was like chatting with a friend and hearing about her week. Spoken from the Heart: Choosing Grace is relatable. I found myself nodding my head as I read parts of it. I wanted to talk to her and offer encouragement in parts and praise with her in others. It was like talking to her because she has such a way with words. I gleaned so much from this nicely written book. It is a thought provoking, humorous at times, lovely, moving book that is scripturally based. The author’s love for God and her gift for sharing that love is evident throughout this grace filled book. I look forward to now going back and reading it as a daily devotional. This would be a great book for anyone wanting to learn more about grace or strengthen their Walk. It would make a nice small group or bible study. I would highly recommend it and rated it a 5 out of 5 stars.

“Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord” 2 Peter 1:2

Read a Book Monday: Baseball Faith

What is the first word that comes to mind when I say baseball?  Is it faith?  It might not be now but after reading this book, maybe.  It is Lent which means time to prepare yourself.  Strengthen your faith.  Whether you are a baseball fan or not, this is an excellent devotional for you.

In a family of sports enthusiasts, I am the odd gal out. Not only do I not enjoy sports, but I do not understand them. Take baseball for instance, everything I know about it could be put in a Little Leaguer’s pocket. They do have pockets, don’t they?

“Baseball Faith: 52 MLB Stars Reflect on Their Faith” by author Rob Maaddi is the first baseball book of any kind I have read. This 217 page Christian Living book could definitely be read as a devotional. I was totally and pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this book. Actually I loved it. It begins with a heartfelt dedication and then “On Deck” intro to the book. The Table of Contents list all 52 baseball stars alphabetically which is the order you will find them in the book. Each player has a full page color picture, the next page lists his name, a Bible verse that means something to him, and his testimony. The third page lists baseball information on him such as his position, teams, schools, honors, and more. The fourth and last page has “Seventh Inning Stretch” which includes some detailed trivia, more information, and Career Stats. At the end of the book is author information. You will also find an index of Scripture used followed by art credits.

If you know anything about baseball, I bet you know some of these players. Chris Davis, Cesar Hernandez, Pedro Martinez, Steven Matz, Aaron Nola, Andy Pettitte,
just to name a few.

Pedro Martinez talks about growing up in the Dominican Republic and how he prayed all of the time to be a baseball player. He was a skinny kid and questioned about his ability, but his testimony tells that God is the Mighty One and the only One who knows what we can become if we overcome what we think are our limits. Psalm 18:2 is his Bible verse.  The other stories are as uplifting and God glorifying, too.

This is an encouraging, inspiring book. Anyone would benefit from it. A baseball fan will especially love this book. Young boys and girls that want to learn about baseball will devour this book. Adults, too. The 52 messages are real and some pull on your heartstrings. You can feel the emotion through the words.

Author Maaddi has done an exemplary job with this book. It is a well researched, well planned, and well written book. It was penned so that anyone could understand the baseball information and more importantly the testimony. It will light a fire in you to turn to Jesus. It is a book to honor God and share our faith. Something we should do everyday.

This is no base hit. It is a big, bases loaded home run. A true winner!  I highly recommend it and rated it 5 out of 5 stars. Pick up a copy as an Easter gift, for the church library, your youth group, and yourself. Get inspired!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.

Read a Book Monday: “When God Says Wait” Review

All of my life my Mother has told me that I was born 25 days early and have kept up that pace ever since. Somehow I don’t believe my sweet Mother was giving me a compliment but nicely saying I am impatient. I am. I like things right now. Well, who does like to wait?  Even in my prayer life I notice I want things immediately.  It is hard to wait for answers.  Apparently I forget that I am chatting with my Creator, the One who knows what is best and when the right time is.  Recently I was asked to read a book on prayer and when God says wait. Waiting on an answer from anyone is difficult but it is especially hard when it is God. This book helped me gain perspective on that.

“When God Says Wait: Navigating life’s detours and delays without losing your faith, your friends, or your mind” by author Elizabeth Laing Thompson is a 224 page paperback book that any woman will thoroughly enjoy. It is well written with humor, scripture, and biblical stories. There are twelve chapters with catchy titles such as “Wait Is a Four-Letter Word”.  All of the chapters are about a biblical character, such as Naomi, David, Ruth, or Miriam” and their journey.  They are tied in with life today.  Told in narrative, this book took me into the hearts, minds, confidence, and land of each person. I felt their frustration, dilemma , pain, joy, and love as I kept reading. The stories were heart stirring and emotional.

The author has a nice writing style. Her stories flow effortlessly and held my interest. With biblical characters telling their stories the author then explains how it applies to our lives today. The book is well planned and organized. It has scripture and encouragement on trusting God when prayers take a while to be answered. Honest and not sugar coated, the author reminds readers to continue to pray even though they do not get the quick answers they want.  Don’t give up, keep praying.

We live in an immediate society. People are impatient and want things yesterday with no waiting. Sometimes it takes a while for things to line up. Sometimes we need to enjoy the journey.  Sometimes we need to strengthen our faith.  Author Thompson reminds readers not to give up. God hears prayer. Sometimes He has something better planned for us. Sometimes the journey is a blessing.  We need to wait and trust.

I highly recommend this book. It gives new insight into prayer, especially when waiting for an answer. I rated it a 5 out of 5 stars. A copy was provided by Barbour for my honest opinion. Any church library would benefit from this book. It would be a great Lenten read to inspire your prayer life and relationship with Abba.  I would definitely recommend this for a small group, readers club or women’s group.  I loved it and was encouraged.

“But as for me, I will look to the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation; my God will hear me.”  Micah 7:7

Read a Book Monday: “Lincoln’s Table” Book Review

Facebook, twitter, and the news are full of presidential talk. I hate it. Don’t you? Let me ask you, if you had to choose five favorite past presidents beginning with our first President George Washington, would one of your choices be our 16th President Abraham Lincoln? Many people polled have him on their favorites list. Some people place His as their favorite. If you are a Lincoln lover, and aren’t we all, I have a book you need to see: “Lincoln’s Table: A President’s Culinary Journey from Cabin to Cosmopolitan.” Sounds fun, doesn’t it?

“Lincoln’s Table: A President’s Culinary Journey From Cabin to Cosmopolitan” by author Donna D. McCreary is an historical delight. This 182 page hard cover book is chocked full of recipes, illustrations, pictures, and information about the Lincoln family. It is a veritable treasure trove.

Author McCreary has not only listed some historical versions of recipes, such as Beaten Biscuits on page 42, but she followed it up with the modern version on the next page. The same goes for Election Cake and other recipes. Not only was I able to read how the recipe was written and made, but I could also make it in my modern kitchen. Genius!

Pictures are sprinkled throughout this lovely cookbook. You will see the Lincoln Home in Springfield, the beautiful tea set of Asian-style florals they used, china and crystal from the White House during the Lincoln administration, and Mary Todd Lincoln in her fashionable dresses. You will read menus, poems, and so much information you will be begging for more. The author is an expert on the Lincoln, and it is apparent by this wonderful book.

Epilogue, acknowledgements, bibliography, index of the book, and index of recipes are the ending pages after a plethora of Lincoln recipes, pictures, tips, and information. Did you ever wonder what sorghum is? It is explained in this book. Need tips on cast iron cooking? They’re in the book, too. Mary Todd’s Courting Cake recipe is included. How about White House recipes. Check! I could go on and on and on.

Do yourself a favor and get this book. I absolutely love it. The author has written a well planned, well organized, knowledgeable book that is interesting for cooks and readers alike. It is much more than a cookbook. This gem is an excellent, fascinating book on the Lincoln family. I rated it 5 out of 5 stars. It would make a terrific gift, cooking club book, or treat for oneself. Pick one up by contacting me. I will give the author your contact information.

Historians tell us that President Lincoln grew up in a strict Baptist household. Later after he married, he was said to read the Bible daily, pray, and attend Protestant church regularly, but he never joined church. There have been many debates over his religious beliefs. What about your beliefs. Will people know or debate if you are a Christian?

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
1 Corinthians 10:31

Book Review “The Seekers”

Have you visited any Amish communities or read any Amish books? Are you intrigued with the Amish culture? I am fascinated by their lifestyle. Their deep family love is inspiring. The simple life they lead is inviting although this girl would have trouble without electricity and other modern conveniences. I would love big family gatherings and playing games. No air conditioning or curling iron, not so much. I recently read “The Seekers” by Wanda Brunstetter and was taken on an Amish vacation. I would recommend this book to you.

This book has everything that I enjoy in Christian fiction. Author Wanda has included plenty of scripture in her book. There are inspirational messages dealing with love, forgiveness, values, respect, and redemption. The present day issues of PTSD, unwanted pregnancy, bullying, and family relations are discussed. Cute children and dogs are included along with the adult characters. Recipes of six Amish dishes follow the story. After the recipes are 15 discussion questions for individual or group reflection and discussion. The last page is information about the author, Wanda.

Wanda has a nice way of writing. Her characters all have a wide variety of personalities and issues. Some main and secondary characters are so lovable while others are just terrible villains. Wanda knows how to write! In this book you will meet Heidi and Lyle, the Amish couple. Heidi teaches the cooking classes. Her students are Ron, Eli, Loretta, Charlotte, and Kendra. Each student has a unique story and issue. As Heidi teaches her class directions are given for an Amish dish in such vivid detail that I wanted to go to my kitchen and cook along side them. I wanted to smell the delicious aromas that were coming out of my book. Now I want to take a cooking class even though I have written a cookbook myself!

This is a lovely book. I became friends with the cooking members and became invested in their lives very early, Heidi’s, too. The story is interesting immediately. I couldn’t put it down from page one and am counting the days until the sequel, although it does not leave you hanging.

I would definitely recommend this delightful Amish tale to anyone. It is wonderful. I absolutely loved it. There are twists, humor, Amish recipes, Amish words, great descriptions of the Amish life and country, and mystery. I rated this 5 out of 5 stars. A copy was provided by Barbour and the author for my honest opinion.
