My Review

This Homeward Journey by author Misty M. Beller is the fifth book in her Heart of the Mountains series, and it is a such a good novel. No need to worry because it is Book 5 if you’ve missed the first four. The author has written it in a way that you can easily understand and catch up. It is a beautiful and captivating story of unexpected love and the importance of learning to trust one’s heart again.

The author has a pleasant writing style which makes her books a pleasure to read. Her vivid descriptions, characters, and abundant conversation drew me in quickly. She writes gracefully and allows her story to smoothly unfold. Unlike the other four which are set in the harsh winter, this one is in the summer. It is the tale of Rachel, a widow, and her young son traveling through the Montana territory to the Canadian mountains during the mid-1860s in search of her brother.

It is also the story of Seth. A swoon worthy guide that can handle whatever the mountain tosses his way. He has a heart for nature, outdoors, caring for others, and God. This is an all around good guy.

All of the characters were well written and developed to the point that they became my friends. I was invested in their story and felt their emotions. My heart broken when theirs did. I smiled when something good happened. I felt like I was on the mountain, too. Only a good wordsmith can take me along with them.

The author has liberally laced the story with inspiration without sounding preachy. There is no doubt it is a Christian fiction. Thank you, Ms. Beller! She has included what I can only imagine to be realistic trauma and action on this mountain adventure as Rachel encounters beasts of all kinds including ferocious bears, rattlesnakes, and dastardly kidnappers.

Yes, I definitely recommend this book. It is a story of hope, trust, love, and second chances. It is a story of what God has planned for you even if you can’t see it. If you enjoy historical Christian action fiction, you will love it. It rates a 4.5 out of 5 from me. I received a complimentary copy of this book from CelebrateLit. Why Christian Historical Romance?

I don’t know about you, but my life can get crazy…busy…chaotic. Historical fiction gives me a haven, allowing me to immerse in a simpler time and place. Add in remote mountain settings—log cabins and horses and snow…what could be better? Sometimes I wish God had let me live a couple centuries ago, but then I remind myself He knew exactly what He was doing. I don’t do well without a shower every day. 😊 And He even lets me go back to that simpler time through stories!

If you’re reading this, you probably enjoy immersing yourself in a good book, too. Story can be such a powerful thing! Becoming an intimate part of the characters’ lives, feeling their struggles—the desperation, the elation, the emotions, the love.

I enjoy reading and writing Christian fiction because it provides a place where I don’t always have to be concerned about inappropriate language or too-graphic love scenes. It’s a “safe zone” where my imagination can escape, living out exciting times and experiencing God-orchestrated happily-ever-afters—without having to clean-up at the end of the day. Can you relate?

Hope for 2019

Here we are at the end of another year. They certainly seem to roll around fast, don’t they? As you reflect on 2018 I hope you keep the happy memories and discard the unpleasant ones. There isn’t any need to take bad things into a brand new year. Let’s hope only good things for 2019.

With the New Year comes hope. Hope that it will be better than the last one. More importantly, hope that I will be better than I was. Are you like me and often think “if I could do that over” or “if I could just say that again” things would be much better. Unfortunately we aren’t able to go back, we can only learn from our mistakes and go forward and hope we do better.

What things did 2018 teach you? It taught me a multitude of eye-opening, heart warming things. Perhaps age has much to do with that. With age comes wisdom, right? To begin with, when I ask God to forgive me I need to accept His forgiveness and also forgive myself. No need to ask again. It is done. No dwelling on it. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

God places friends in our lives. He might put them in our childhood neighborhood or school because we will need prayer partners later in life. Maybe he will gather them in groups or at work. He knows who we need long before the need arises. This year I have prayed for and been prayed over by many friends, old and new. Trust the people God places in your life to help you.

I have learned that I am not too old to try new things and succeed. Trying something new is a bit scary, but with support from friends and family it was a lot easier. God blessed the venture and is so good.

I also learned there can be joy through tears. My precious daughter suffered a miscarriage this Autumn. My world was devastated. I mourned the loss of that grandchild fiercely and oftentimes still do. During my prayers one night I realized that while I won’t see that child here on Earth, she will be waiting in Heaven for us.

Each year God has been giving me and my prayer partner words for the upcoming year. One individual and one for us. Our word is victory. What a strong, triumphant word. I cannot even think of it without singing the hymn “Victory in Jesus”. Yes, He sought me and bought me. Thank you, Lord Jesus.

My word is hope. Ahhhhhhhh, hope. How calming and reassuring. My mind goes straight to the scripture Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Now friends, that is hope.

What is your hope for 2019? Peace, health, prosperity, family unity? Oh, I have so many, but I will be satisfied letting God be in control and directing me.

Be God’s Vessel

On a rare trip to the inside of the grocery, I noticed most people hurrying past the Salvation Army bellringer. No eye contact, and especially no hello or Merry Christmas to her was offered. I supposed people were afraid it would cost them a donation. My attitude was taking a turn for the worse so I checked it at the door.

Inside was a flurry of activity. School is out for Christmas break, and kids were excited just to be at the grocery store. “Mom, could we get this? Mom, I really want some of these. Mom, Mom, Mom!” Poor mothers were trying to finish shopping while kids were requesting items not on the list or in the budget. I spied one young mother longingly check the price of a turkey and then ham. Reluctantly she put both back and went to the reduced section where she picked up some marked down ground meat. The four kiddos danced around the packaged lunches down a ways that all kids love but were good when she shook her head no. For a family of six, her cart was surprisingly scant. I crossed paths with them again as I went down the toy aisle checking for stocking stuffers for my four grands. The kids were eager to offer opinions even though they were much younger than my grands are.

I was delayed at the pharmacy for a short bit but ended up in line next to the delightful family. After flagging down a worker, I asked him to hurry and get a ham, turkey, dozen lunchables, and some toys the kids had ogled. I was ready to check out and the mother was next in line next door so I needed him to hustle. He did. With the help of “Ryan” I was able to get these bought and later loaded into her van without her knowing. He even contributed some items he knew she needed since she shops there often.

At her checkout time the mama did not have enough food stamps to pay so she started to put things back. The person in back of her asked “for the privilege of paying for your order” and even added some items from his cart and the candy display. I heard the woman say through tears she had prayed for a miracle and thanked the man for allowing God to use him.

That day God used me, Ryan, and another man to provide groceries and toys for a faithful, praying woman. I tell you this not for any glory for myself at all, but for God. He is Jehovah Jirah, our God that provides. Answering prayers is just in a His nature. He will use you if you just make yourself available and ask.

Friends, I am abundantly blessed and that could have easily been me or one of my children except for the Grace of God. If you are nudged this season by Abba, please follow through with it. Let Him use you as the vessel to answer someone’s prayer. You will end up being blessed.

Christmas Joy not Stress

Are you enjoying the Advent Season? Is your life filled with joy or stress? This time before Christmas should be a time to reflect and prepare our hearts for the great gift that our Heavenly Father sent to us…..His Son, Jesus, our Savior, God with us. Sometimes it is hard to do amidst the hustle and bustle of buying presents, sending cards, making cookies, decorating and all of the other preparations we think we need to do.

One good thing that comes with age is wisdom. I have realized that Christmas comes whether I have cookies baked and cards sent or not. Plus, the world goes on. This time of year isn’t about being stressed out and tired. No, not at all. It is about love. God’s great, everlasting, unimaginable love for us.

I would think He would want us to be joyful and happy, spreading His love and light to others instead of grumbling and be anxious that we are too busy and do not have enough time to get everything done. My friend, perhaps you are trying to do too much. Relax. Enjoy this season for what it is. Let peace overtake you.

What things might make this season easier for you this year? Perhaps using gift bags instead of wrapping would free up time. If you don’t have time for decorating like you usually do, that is okay. As the saying goes “the prettiest Christmas decorations are my children’s faces” at home. Dinner is another pressure point. Go with paper plates. Make it a pitch-in. Order some of the food instead of cooking. Take some things off of your shoulders so that you can be happy. Your family will appreciate a happy you more than a fully decorate house.

Let’s examine the other side where you have everything under control. Wonderful! You are able to enjoy Christmas music and doing things with family. Have you considered helping someone that is stressing? Maybe offering to bake cookies or dessert would take a load off of their shoulders. What about helping with errands or sending dinner one night to free up some of their time? Your giving to them before Christmas could make a vast difference.

Offer to babysit or wrap a neighbor’s gifts for their children. That is a difficult task and would be most welcomed. What things can you add to this list?

Christmastime should be a special season. One to anticipate each year with joy. Not one to dread. It is a season of good will and peace. Let those reign with love and joy.

We are celebrating the birth of our Redeemer, Jesus Christ. Read the story of His birth again. Think about His humble beginnings. Ponder the true meaning of Christmas. Concentrate on Him and not the things of this world. He will make your days merry and bright.

Book Tour & Giveaway “Prayer Warrior Confessions”

Being a Prayer Warrior myself, I was eager to read this book. What I had envisioned and what I read were vastly different, but that does not mean the book by compilers or authors Harriet E Michael and Shirley Crowder is a bad one. Far from it. It means I was far off in what the book actually is.

This collection of stories were captivating. The writing style was easy to read and follow. At the end there was a touching note of what was learned from this experience. That gave to pause to question if I do that with my answered prayers.

The stories touch me. Some were heart wrenching, heart warming, and even a bit funny. All had a lesson to share. It was easy to become engrossed in this book. I wanted to keep reading it. After finishing it, the stories stuck with me.

I highly recommend this book. It would be a fantastic gift. Reading groups would truly enjoy discussing the stories within its covers. Anyone would love this book and draw inspiration from it. It gets a 4.5 out of 5 star rating from me.

The Liberty Bride by Marylu Tyndall

The Liberty Bride by author Marylu Tyndall is Book 6 in the Brides of the Mayflower series. If you have been following the series you know that different authors write each book. This one is set during the War of 1812. It is an action filled historical Christian romance from a talented writer.

Author Tyndall has a way of grabbing readers’ attention immediately and keeping it until the final page. This book was no exception. I became invested in the lives of Emeline Baratt and Owen Masters quickly. Tyndall has done her research in writing this well planning, organized, and penned novel. The descriptions took me to the 1800’s during time of war and turmoil.

Characters are relatable and endearing. They were well rounded and easy to imagine. They jumped from the pages and into my imagination. Through danger, intrigue, sadness, hardship, fear, and many other adventures, I shared the emotions they felt. I laughed out loud a few times and teared up, too.

My favorite things with historical Christian books are for them to teach me something and not hide the fact they are Christian books. Give me inspiration and scripture. I am happy to report The Liberty Bride passed both with flying colors. I learned about life at sea and much about the War of 1812.

Some situations and circumstances are relatable as far as the faith aspect. The characters have issues with obedience, trust, and faith. Who hasn’t at one time or another. I enjoyed watching their faith journey grow.

This is a great book. It was a page turner for me. After the story readers will find an index which includes the historical section as well as a biography. Be sure not to skip that. Don’t worry that this is Book 6 if you haven’t read the others. It can be read as a stand-alone.

I definitely recommend this book. Fans of the author will be thrilled with it. Readers who enjoy Christian historical, adventure that includes romance set during a war will love this latest installment to the Series, too. Reading groups that enjoy historical fiction will devour it. It gets a 5 out of 5 Stars from me. I was provided a copy from the publisher but was not required to write a review. Woman of Courage and Woman of Hope by Wanda Brunstetter

I love historical fiction. A good historical fiction takes me on an adventure to a time and place that I have never been. It also teaches me something about them.

In her historical Christian fiction, Woman of Courage, author Wanda E. Brunstetter takes me on a journey from New York to the Oregon Territory. It is the story of Amanda Pearson as she joins a Quaker mission to spread the word of God to the Indians out West.

The author has given us delightful, strong characters. It is easy to become invested in their lives and this story. Amanda’s journey has so many trials but she preserves. This shows a strong faith and trust in God.

In the second story, Little Fawn is a very likable character. She has developed a strong faith and wants to share it with other Indians. Her story is intriguing and captivated me quickly.

Conversation is easy and plentiful in this book. I felt like I was right there listening. Descriptions were spot on and my imagination painted a vivid picture of Amanda and her friend a Yellow Bird as well as the scenery. The same with the second story. Emotions were transferred from the characters to me. I felt their sadness, fear, and joy.

The author has written well researched stories. There is a plethora of information on the various Indian tribes and beliefs. Material was well organized, planned, and written. Author Brunstetter is a gifted wordsmith whether she is writing historical or Amish novels. Readers will always find Christian encouragement and inspiration woven throughout her stories.

I definitely recommend this book. Fans of historical fiction and Wanda’s Amish fans will love it. If you are interested in learning about Indians, you will also enjoy this book. This would be a great reading club book and Christmas gift. I rated it a 5 out of 5 stars.

Put Christ back in CHRISTmas

The most wonderful time of the year is fast approaching. Is it one of your favorites? There are lovers of Christmas and then there are the Scrooges. In fact, throughout the Advent Season, we could even find that we switch from one to the other. Oh my! Isn’t that a dreadful thought?!

Christmastime is one of the most delightful times for me. Just thinking about Jesus being sent here to be our Savior bring tears to my eyes. I never get weary of listening to Christmas hymns. Today I absent-mindedly hummed and half sang “O Little Town of Bethlehem” while I did paperwork. That isn’t even my “go to” Christmas song. Usually “Mary Did You Know” is first on my mind.

I am a consultant for Pampered Chef and do my parties on Facebook. Like in-home parties we, too, play games. One of my popular this year has been to name something that has to do with Christmas starting with A, the next person takes B, and on through the alphabet. As I totaled points for the door prize drawing, I reviewed the answers.

The results were about 50% Christian answers and 50% secular. The letter J brought words Jesus, Joy, Jingle and Jolly. S gave Savior, Star, Santa, and Stockings. Every one of the reindeer were mentioned, but I don’t remember seeing Mary, Joseph, Elizabeth, or Bethlehem.

What about your list? When you think about Christmas do your thoughts immediately turn to the first six letters in that word…..CHRIST? Maybe this world has pushed Him back from the front because of the hustle, bustle, and commercialism of today. Don’t let that happen.

This is the season of love and miracles. God gave us all a miracle, His Son, our Redeemer. That is the biggest, best present anyone has ever given you and me. Hmmm, what have we given Him in return?

For me, I am going to try to keep more CHRIST in Christmas. Play more hymns, read more scripture and Christian based books. I have decided “do not stress and show grace” is my motto. Without stressing out, I am a much nicer person. Not only do I get grace from Abba, but I will in turn give it to others. Everyone deserves grace. People are more important than some of the silly things that upset others.

Okay, so our focus will be on Jesus and helping show Him to others this year. Even if we are playing a game or singing a song, we can easily do this. A former minister once told me if I kept dripping little drops on someone eventually they would get wet. Are you game?

Take Christmas back. Give it to Jesus. It is His birthday and so much more we are celebrating. Spread joy, love, grace, and His light. Let’s shower drops of Jesus on everyone.

“I Know the Plans” Book Tour & Giveaway Celebrate Lit

I Know the Plans by author Melissa Wardwell is an emotionally charged contemporary Christian novel in her Promises from Above Series. It is the story of married couple Tiffany and Brad.

Author Wardwell has a nice easy style of writing. Her book was well written, researched, organized and planned. She has a way of transferring emotions and feelings from her pages straight into readers.

I found the characters to be believable. They were realistic and well developed. Some were more like friends than others to me. Their conversation was easy and flowed smoothly.

Situations were nail-biting and heart-breaking. This was not a relaxed read for me. There were a lot of emotional moments. However, it was rather slow at the beginning before really grabbing my attention. There are life lessons to learn and inspiration in this book.

It gets a recommendation and 4 out of 5 star rating. A copy was provided from Celebrate Lit but I was under no obligation to write a review. These are my own honest opinions.

About the Author

Melissa Wardwell resides in the quaint town of Owosso, Michigan with her husband and Melissa-Wardwell-200x300 their three teen aged children. She began her writing journey in August of 2014 with her debut novel “What God Brings Together”. She decided to give writing a try after she shared a story that nagged at her with a friend. Unsure in her own abilities to craft a story she plunged ahead anyway. After reading the first draft of that first book, she then understood that God had a much bigger plan. “God does not give his children a desire just so that it can go to waste.” Since then, she has added three more novels and taken part in two anthologies. Melissa also has a review blog and is a contributing blogger for Heart”wings” Blog.

Being a mother and wife herself, Melissa understands the importance of taking care of yourself from time to time. Jeremiah 29:11 (ESV) “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

This verse has been my “Go To” verse since the day I married. It is a constant reminder that no matter what struggles I endure, God has a plan. I may not be able to see through the fog, I may not like or understand the journey, but it is all part of a plan. All I can do is trust God’s design for my life and be willing to move when He tells me to.

God used the writing process of “I Know the Plans” to remind me that He has a plan for me and book and I need to just trust the process. This book has taken me over a year to complete. If it wasn’t one thing to keep me from committing to it, then it was another. I don’t begrudge the events that kept me away, but as soon as I would begin to grumble to God about not having the energy or the brain power to write, I would get this preverbal reminder that I was not the one in control. If I am going to write faith lessons in fiction, I need to trust the Master Author.

In “I Know the Plans”, Sergeant Bradley Jones and his wife, Tiffany, are hit with one whopper of a plot twist that leaves them wondering if they can get through some major medical issues, PTSD, and infertility in one piece. Their family and friends do their best to support the couple but sometimes, trusting God’s plan is all they can do. Something we all try to learn to do in our own lives.

Due to the military thread in this book, I asked my veteran friends what charity they hold in high esteem. Almost every single one of them suggested “Wounded Warrior Project” and offered rave reviews of their humanitarian efforts in the military community. So, a portion of my royalties from this book will be going to “Wounded Warrior Project” in honor of their service and the service of thousands of others.

There is another group of people I wanted to honor. Those who fight with infertility. I know many who have fought the battle to have children of their own. Some eventually find success, while other have not. Some have even taken the route of adoption and have saved the lives of young ones who needed all the love in the world. Then there are some that just choose to embrace the fact that children of their own was not going to happen and have given all their love to others. All of these groups of people fight a battle that is riddled with pain, confusion, endless medical procedures, and thousands of dollars. There isn’t one group or anther that could support these people as much as our love, prayers, and thoughtful kindness can. So, I encourage you to embrace those around you and shower them with love. Sometimes what they need is just a friend that will listen and not try to mix the problem. Just as you have received the Father’s love, now you can give it away.

Were you a Little House on the Prairie Fan? Me, too! I loved watching the television show and imaging that way of life. What did you think about the character Nellie Oleson? She certainly wasn’t one of my favorites at the beginning. However, she grew up and I remember her changing into a much nicer person.

In her book “The Three Faces of Nellie” author Robynne Elizabeth Miller enlightens readers on the real people whom Nellie was. Interestingly, Nellie was a compilation of three different people and not an individual. Nellie Owens, Stella Gilbert and Genevieve Masters were the women that together made up Nellie.

This is a rather short book that will probably only interest fans of Little House. It is very well researched and organized. In fact, it reads a lot like a research paper or project. References are cited, there is much data presented, and some speculation. I am not sure what I was expecting, but this was a surprise. It is more of a history lesson.

I would only recommend this to fans of Laura Ingalls Wilder and Little House on the Prairie. It took me a bit to finish even though it was short. I rate it a 3.5 out of 5 stars. I was given a copy by Celebrate Lit but under no obligation to write a review. This is my own, honest opinion.

Discovering the true stories behind Nellie, Genevieve, and Estella has been a fascinating journey. All three ended up on the West Coast at one point. . .true westward movement! One was widowed twice, one ended up divorced, and one died way too young. Two only had one child, and one had three, though she outlived her youngest by a very long time. There’s even some “Nellie-like” drama in there: Embezzlement. Lying on censuses. Shady land deals.

But there are some beautiful things, too. . .like the enduring love of a husband after his young wife died. Or the rare closeness of a mother and daughter who shared their lives as adults. Or the strength of a young widowed mother who not only cared for her son, but headed out west, in true pioneer fashion, while she did so.

Laura Ingalls Wilder did a masterful job of creating the character of Nellie Oleson. But the three real-life women behind that iconic character are, in my opinion, infinitely more intriguing.

She holds an undergraduate degree in English Literature from Westmont College and a Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Nonfiction and Fiction from Ashland University.

Nasty Nellie Oleson. One of the most iconic literary characters in literature. Whether you loved her … or hated her … or loved to hate her, she probably left a lasting impression on you. At least if you were a fan of the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder like I was growing up!

As a young girl, I loved Wilder’s tales of wagons, prairies, and grand westward adventures. Strangely, growing up didn’t change my love for all things Little House one tiny bit. But I did become deeply curious about the real life people behind some of the more fascinating Little House characters.

Namely, Nellie Oleson.

As I began to research Nellie, I learned a ton of interesting things. She wasn’t one person, for example. Laura Ingalls Wilder wove three girls she knew in childhood into one composite character for her books. One of the first “Nellie’s,” Nellie Owens, did have a brother named Willy, but did you know that he went blind from two separate incidents, one in childhood and one in adulthood? And did you know that all three of the “Nellies” ended up on the west coast at one point? Talk about true westward movement! One married a man who eventually went to prison for embezzlement, one did some shady land deals, and one shouldn’t have been a “Nellie” at all.

I suppose I was hoping for a good, old-fashioned redemption story. Wouldn’t it have been wonderful if the mean girl in Wilder’s stories grew up to work with orphans or rescue unwanted animals? Alas, that’s not exactly what happened. But the stories of these three women were fascinating all the same.

I hope you have as much fun discovering the real stories behind the famous Nellie Oleson as I did!
