Jesus’s Temper versus Ours

We are all self-quarantined at home with this Covid19 pandemic.  Emotions are on a roller coaster of ups and downs.  Tempers are quick to flare. Our descendants will read about this in history books.  How are you spending your time, and how are you maintaining your temper?

Yesterday was Palm Sunday.  After Jesus arrived in Jerusalem did you ever wonder how he spent His final week in ministry?  On Monday He taught His disciples a parable about faith when He cursed a fig tree that did not produce fruit. Do you remember that one?

They had been out walking and were hungry when they saw a fig tree with many leaves.  After they looked for the fruit, none could be found. It was barren. Jesus cursed it, and when they came back to it had shriveled up and died.   Scholars believe the tree being cursed represents God’s judgment on those that are spiritually dead.

Jesus was comparing the tree to the whole nation of Israel because it had become spiritually barren before the Lord.  It no longer produced fruit.  The people knew their  religion but did not live it.  They knew the correct words, but their hearts were away from God.

This story of what Jesus also did might be more familiar.  Jesus also went into the temple and cleared it out of the dishonest money changers.  This time He was mad.  He had enough.  They were cheating people and making a mockery of the temple.  Jesus went through overturning tables and saying: “Scripture says ‘My Temple will be a house of prayer’, but you have turned it into a den of thieves.” He drove the money changers and their animals out restoring order and respect.

60C9EC58-FDB2-49FF-8D9C-2434E3245296

What has stayed with me about this story for many years is that Jesus stopped and braided a whip so that He could think about what He was going to do before just charging into the temple.  He didn’t fly off the handle but took time to think about the situation. Maybe He prayed.  I would imagine He did.

How about you when you become angry?

“So He made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; He scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.” John 2:15

B90CBE0E-39C5-4C65-86AB-11DD706AF67F

Could you do this? I can’t tell you how many times I have flown off the handle in anger. Acted quickly without thinking things through.  My family calls that having a “short fuse”   because it does not take long to explode after the anger is lit.

Jesus is not like this. His righteous indignation toward what was happening in the temple was just. It needed to be done. He waited to think clearly and make certain it was done correctly.  How many times have I wished that I had done things like that?  Many! What do you do when you are angry?  How do you react?

Jesus had one week left with his disciples before his crucifixion and resurrection.  Everything was done in the right way without rushing.  In His time and in His way.  Even in a time of righteous anger He still slowed down and gave Himself time to cool off and think with a clear mind.  What a beautiful example for all of us.

Hosanna! Blessed is He Who Comes in the Name of the Lord!

Happy Palm Sunday! Of all the Sundays before Easter throughout the years, this one will probably be the most memorable.  Never in my lifetime did I expect the church doors to be closed for any reason, but now they are. You know what?  Since it has happened now, we are all still able to worship at home with most of our churches and a plethora of others.  Our souls will not starve.  We have a buffet before us.

Today hundreds of years ago, Jesus rode triumphantly into Jerusalem. Scripture tells us that Jesus rode into the city on a young donkey. The streets were lined with people who threw clothes and palms or small branches, in front of him as a sign of homage and respect. This was what people did for kings. They were treating Jesus like royalty. Using palm branches symbolized peace and victory. Jesus was coming in peace, triumphantly. The crowd of people shouted “Hosanna! Blessed is He Who comes in the name of the Lord.”

This Palm Sunday we need to claim peace and victory in His name.  Amen.  Wave those palm branches high!  Did you know the Bible tells us “Do not fear” three hundred and thirty five times?  Wow!  One time for each day of the year.  Not only does He tell us not to fear or be afraid, but He has placed it in our spirit.  “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” 2Timothy 1:7.

Let’s be Warriors and not Worriers.  In Matthew 6:34  it says “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”  So how do you become a Warrior?  Read your scripture and pray.  Put on the armor of God.

Pandemic has cast a black cloud on this planet, but the bright glorious Light from God shines through it.  Use good judgment and don’t lose hope.  We are entering the celebration of Holy Week, the anniversary of the events the week before Jesus went to the cross and victoriously arose.  Grab your palm branches and prepare for peace and victory.  Hosanna!  Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!

Hope for New Beginnings Celebrate Lit Book Tour and Giveaway

My Thoughts

Hope for New Beginnings by authors Dr. Howard Eyrich and Shirley Crowder is a Christian devotional.  It is filled with a plethora of topics worthy of reflection.  There are thirty one devotions included in this inspirational book.

Each devotion contains a scripture, scripture observation, devotion, prayer, interaction, notes, thoughts, and questions sections.  The lesson is in-depth and subjects vary from Grief and Hurt to Forgiveness and Hope.  I found certain days spoke to me more than others, but that is normal for any devotional.

These devotional encourage deeper study of God’s Word.  The journal section made it easy to review what I had learned.  This was a well written and organized book.

The only negative I would point out is the cover.  I wish it had a more eye-catching, pleasing cover.  The sunshine breaking through dark clouds is symbolic but very gloomy.

I recommend this enlightening book.  Devotions may be done individually or as a group study.  They also may be done daily or stretched out into a week.  There is so much to ponder in each one.  Each lesson draws readers closer to God.  It receives 4 out of 5 stars as a rating from me.  I received a copy from Celebrate Lit, and these are my own, honest words.

More from Shirley

New beginnings are a regular part of life. Sometimes they are well planned, and we eagerly anticipate the future. At other times, we are reticent to move forward into the new beginning. As we think about new beginnings it is appropriate for us to look at the beginning of God’s Word—the Bible.

In Genesis 1:1 ESV, we read, In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Here God is the subject, as He is the subject of the entire Bible. From this verse we learn something very important about God—He existed before the universe was created. God has always been, is now, and will always be, present.

Next, we learn that from nothing God created the universe and everything within it. He is the holy, sovereign, majestic, powerful, all-knowing God.

Every time I read these first few verses of the Bible, I am amazed that with just four little words, Let there be light (verse 3), the Creator God spoke into existence light that drove away the darkness. What astounding power! From these verses, we learn that God is the Author of light. Other places in Scripture tell us that God is light itself (1 John 1:5), and James calls Him the Father of lights (James 1:17).

Think about it: here we are today, many years since God spoke those four little words, Let there be light, and as John tells us, The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it (John 1:5). The Light—God—brings clarity, order, and understanding, while darkness is seen as evil, void, and chaotic.

I watched the coverage of a solar eclipse on several websites. It was so interesting to listen as a myriad of scientists and others explained the wonders of the universe, and while the science behind it all was quite interesting to me, the coverage fell flat. Why? Because it was totally devoid of any mention of Creator God. Only one man explained the solar eclipse through the lens of God’s Word. As he explained the science behind the solar eclipse, he also explained that THE God of the Universe who created everything that we see, holds the entire universe in His hands, and controls everything that happens, including a solar eclipse.

In the midst of a new beginning or anything else going on in your life, the truths in these passages are wonderful reminders that we can step confidently into any new beginning as we trust in the God who was here in the beginning, is here with us now, and who will be with us always. And what a comfort it is to remember that the light of God dispels the darkness and chaos of sin.

There is Hope, Celebrate Lit Book Tour and Giveaway

My Thoughts

There is Hope, Bloom Where You are Planted by author Carla Huelsmann is a combination devotional, journal, and memoir.  The author has written it to encourage and inspire those struggling with illness, severe illness.  She has penned these 52 life lessons from her experience and wants to share hope with others.

Each lesson begins with about two pages explaining happened to Carla.  The lesson is followed by a relevant scripture.  Closing the lesson is a question about the reader with space to journal an answer.  Everything ties together into a nice, new t lesson or devotional on hope.

The writing is personal and warm.  Author Huelsmann is open and writes as if talking to a friend over coffee.  I loved her writing style and found myself invested in her story.  She inspired me with her faith in God.

Everything is covered within the pages of this book.  The highs and lows, hope and misgivings, along with heart warming memories.  Some of the days were emotional as I began to feel closer to the author through her writing.  I wish it went a little deeper, but it is still very good.

I highly recommend this book.  It will provide hope, faith, and encouragement.  This would make a lovely group read for people going through illness.  Church libraries would benefit from a copy.  I rated it 4 out of 5 stars.  A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit but these are my honest words.

The Missing Piece

Hello my friends!  Are you settling into 2020 and finding all of the pieces coming together or do you perhaps have a piece that is not here?  We have given the new year a week’s testing.  Have you found it measuring up or lacking?

Our answers will be as varied as we all are.  For some of us, this first week has been a delight.  Bring on 2030!  We are ready to see what this year holds.  Others of us find fault with anything.  Delight is found in complaining.  Nothing ever brings joy.  Do you know someone like that?

7069FAC7-783C-4E6B-910C-B1DF74ADCB27

I have a friend who was constantly searching for something.  There was a piece missing in his life, without whatever it was he could not be content.  He tried hard to buy that piece.

Cars were always being upgraded and replaced in hopes that one would finally please him.  Lexus, Jaguar, Porsche, and Mercedes Benz left him wanting.  Automobiles that most of us only dream about owning weren’t good enough.

Adult “boy toys” were purchased.  Boats, horses, helicopter, exotic dogs, and homes, but still there was something lacking.   True happiness eluded him.   He was a prominent professional with a high degree, but that did not satisfy him.  A more prestigious career with additional majors was earned.  Still no satisfaction was found.  His hunt continued.

2A940696-A5AF-429C-B3EC-1C51F89B7FB5

Yes, my friend was still looking for what would complete him.  He had a wife, in fact he had gone through a few, and had children.  Many people called him friend.  What he didn’t have was Jesus.

Psalm 34:10b says “Those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.”

After trying everything else, he turned to the Lord.  After a few Sundays at church he answered the pull on his heart.  The ache and emptiness was gone.  His half empty glass was now full.  The missing piece had been found and he was now complete.

What about you?  Do you feel like you are searching for something that is missing from your life?  Are you yearning for something?  Maybe that something is your Creator.  We were made by and for Him.

If you don’t have a relationship with Him or know someone who needs Him, reach out in prayer.  God will hear you.  You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Goodbye, 2019, and Hello, 2020

Goodbye, 2019 and hello, 2020!  Here we are again. Another year is winding down to a close. Don’t worry. There is a brand new one just waiting to take 2019’s place.  The years seem to come faster and faster anymore.

How did 2019 treat you?  Whether this has been your best, worst, or just an average year, it is time to take inventory and plan for the next one.  Do you have expectations for this coming year, 2020, or yourself? A new year is exciting. It’s like getting a blank piece of paper to begin a new chapter in your story.  Exhilarating, isn’t it?!  The promises it holds are limitless.

F09F077C-FF6F-4F3F-894C-F62F747E3E80

What are your plans to escort the old year out and the new year in?  Will you go out and celebrate or choose to party quietly at home?  The past few years we have opted for the latter.  Watching a movie and switching over to see the ball drop is exciting enough for my hubby and me.

The majority of people begin the year with a resolution or two.  Not a bad idea, but how many resolutions make it all year?  Grand plans and hopes turn to ashes when someone offers a piece of homemade fudge or favorite cookie. Even a 75% off sale can crash plans for saving money. My hubby made a resolution a decade or more ago that he continues to keep……”to stop making New Year’s resolutions.” Perhaps I should try that one. My resolutions don’t seem to make it very long.  How about yours?
Design

One tradition that I do at the end of each year is to review my prayer list.  On it is usually one item that looms greater than any of the others. If you have a prayer list you know the one I mean. It is the one you give over to Jesus to handle and take to the Father. Then later that day you start fretting over it again, take it back, and give suggestions to Him on how to work it out. You pick it back up and cannot seem to give it away.  It is your Velcro problem.  It seems to stick with you no matter what.

75346DE3-E11B-4BCA-877B-ABDC326C686AThe problem is so big and seems unsolvable. Oh, but I have great news for you. God is bigger and more powerful than anything. Period.  He is also in the business of miracles.

This is my solution to permanently give it over to Abba.  I take a piece of paper and jot down that problem which has now become a mountain. Then I pray about it, completely surrendering it to Jesus, throw the paper in the fireplace, and I watch it burn. As it is eaten up by flames and disintegrated, I give thanks that the problem is out of my hands and into His. I have totally relinquished it to my Maker.  He is doing what needs done according to His perfect will.  Before my prayer ends the paper has turned to ashes, tears stream down my cheeks, and my worry has vanished. I am at peace.  Shalom.

0C4BA9AB-8081-40E6-AB26-DB27ECD69C1C

Try it with one of your problems that has grabbed you and refuses to let go. God says not to worry. We can do that only by praying and turning things over to Him. He is good and He is faithful. God won’t let us down. In fact, He will give us His perfect peace.  Go into 2020 with one less issue hanging over your head, and with you holding onto Jesus’s hand.  Give it to Him.  Trust Him.  He has this, He has 2020, and He has you!

Aren’t There More of Us?

I am struggling with this full term abortion that some states are wanting to allow.  Actually, I struggle with the idea of abortion at all.  Obviously this is one of the most heavily debated topics.   As much as I want to jump on a soap box and give you my views, that is not what I want to talk about today.  I know.  Surprise opening if I am not debating pro-life and abortion, but everyone should know my heart on that by now.

7529AB3D-D735-4D7B-9632-6186FC2B64D2

What I want is discuss is if there are so many people outraged at this, why is it happening?  We live in the United States of America which I was taught in school is a republic.  The definition of republic is: “a state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch.”  Okay, I will agree to that.  I have also heard it said we are a democracy.  A democracy is “a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.”

So whatever our country is, it is “by the people” and not just by the elected.  With so many citizens being upset with this latest abortion ruling, I ponder why it is passing.  Aren’t there more of us that are appalled and against it than there are that are for it?

If the information I have been reading is true, it is absolutely nothing short of barbaric.  For a Nation that says “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. . .” this latest news on full-term abortion doesn’t sound too welcoming.  It sounds like veiled infanticide.  I see the comparisons of the protection for the young  endangered species verses an unborn human child and it breaks my heart.

DAF4161E-5C0B-44B6-A4F7-8723A11C2B1C

What can we do?  Honestly, if so many of us are disturbed by this shouldn’t we be doing something?  My thought is to PRAY FERVENTLY and WITHOUT CEASING.  Each day take this before Abba, our Father and Creator.  If we are so immensely grieved, He must be so much more than we can fathom.  Second, tell every elected official.  Ask what can be done to stop this lunacy.  Someone much smarter than I should have some ideas on what it takes to stop this killing.

Please, nothing else.  No violence, no protests, nothing that could get out of hand.  This was something I needed to talk to you about and request prayer.  It seems ridiculous that there are so many against this and yet it bulldozes through.  We need to put on the Armor of God and pray!  Will you join me?

Perfect Timing

Lent is a time of waiting and preparing.  Reminiscent of the forty days Jesus spent in the desert preparing for Holy Week and His crucifiction, it allows us time consider things in our lives as we patiently wait for Easter.

How patient of a person are you?  Are you able to sit and let things happen in their own time?  Perhaps you are more impatient and would rather nudge things along?  My mother takes delight in sharing that I was “born 25 days early and have kept up that pace ever since.”  Obviously, she doesn’t think I am a patient waiter.

2B9D9103-29C8-4970-9188-EA7E49B4D85E

Scripture tells us to “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him…” (Psalm 37:7).  Nothing in that says to hurry Him along.  In Psalm 130:5 it says “I wait for the LORD, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope.”  All throughout the Bible we are instructed to wait on God.  Assurances are given that His timing and His ways are far better than our own.  Do we listen and wait?   I try, but. . .

Have you ever tried to rush things?  You wanted something so much that you just couldn’t wait?  Maybe you took something out of the oven before it was fully baked and instead of experiencing a perfect bite it was awful.  I had a friend whose son took his driver’s test the first day he was able but didn’t study.  It wasn’t the right time, and yes, he failed.

B207B70A-56C3-4EF0-9417-0556CA8CC850

For four years I have been praying for someone who is troubled.  Physical issues are now manifesting in emotional ways.  Depression and anxiety have not just set in but rooted themselves.  I haven’t given up.  The Bible says to “pray without ceasing” and so I am.  I have to catch myself because I want to give God some suggestions on how to get this done.  He doesn’t need that.

So I pray and wait until it is His time, completely giving my loved one over to the Creator. When it is His timing then things will change.  In the meantime, God is here.  Always here.

Lent is a time of preparing my heart and mind for the miracle of Easter.  It is a time of waiting for what is to come and denying ourselves luxuries like Jesus did in the desert.  This is a time for drawing near to God and waiting.  Take comfort in knowing that no matter what you are waiting for when it is God’s time for it to happen, it will.  Until then, keep praying.

Vivir el Dream Book Tour & Giveaway by Celebrate Lit

Welcome to my stop on the book tour for Vivir el Dream.  Be sure to check out all sections of today’s blog.  There is a giveaway at the end that you will want to enter.

Author Allison Garcia has written a contemporary Christian Latino novel that is packed full of emotion and relevance.  It is the first of her pieces that I have read.  This author writes with emotion and grit.  She doesn’t offer candy-coated fluff.  Garcia gives readers real life scenarios even if they are harsh.

In this book, issues of immigration, violence, deportation, and even language are discussed.  With our country discussing a “wall” that made this book even more timely.  Difficult topics were openly and honestly portrayed.  At times I felt my toes being stepped on and other times my feelings were hurt.  This is a real to life book.

The writing was candid and made me emotional.  Characters were vividly described.  I became invested in their stories and got emotional with them.  It was easy to imagine things as they played out in this hard hitting book.  I was so taken with the characters and their trial that by the end of the book my emotions were raw.

The Christian Faith element was woven throughout this book.  There was no doubt this was a Christian book.  I was able to pick up some bits of knowledge by reading this.  Life lessons are packed into this novel.  After reading this I have a better understanding of immigrants.

Definitely I would recommend this book.   Contemporary fiction readers will enjoy and those liking Latino Fiction.  It is very impactful and stayed with me long after I finished it. I was disappointed there are no discussion questions.  This would make a great book group read.

A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit but I was under no obligation to write a favorable review.  These are my own honest thoughts.

Authenticity and Love

When I wrote my debut novel Vivir el Dream in 2012, I never imagined that it was going to win five awards, that I would be invited to churches and universities and NPR to speak about it, or that it would be taught on a college campus. That’s not why I wrote it. Sure, I hoped that people would read it and love it, but I never imagined the impact it would have and the book’s relevance seven years later.

There were two main reasons I wrote Vivir el Dream: authenticity and love.

They go hand-in-hand, but I shall tell you a little about how God sparked the story in my heart.

In 2011, we had three church members deported, and one of them was a dear friend—a good man who loves his family, greeted the congregation at the door, helped take the collection every Sunday and set up the tables and chairs for special programs. To see our friend, and hermano en Cristo, treated in a way that traumatized his children and nearly tore apart up his family, was something that broke my heart. But what broke it worse was seeing how the media spoke about undocumented people and sadder yet, having conversations with other Christians who spoke anger and hatred towards “illegals.”

God spoke to my heart about this. How could my brothers and sisters in Christ be so unkind and uncaring? Hadn’t they read The Good Samaritan? Didn’t they remember about loving our neighbors? It happened again and again, and I realized, with God’s help, that one of the challenges was that people didn’t understand the real story. They were fed a certain stereotype by the media, an image of a tattooed person in a gang or a drug dealer.

They hadn’t actually met anyone undocumented. Or at least they hadn’t realized they had.

In my life and in my job as a counselor, I had met tons of undocumented immigrants, and I had known them the great majority to be kind, hard-working people who wanted the best for their family and were willing to risk it all for the chance at the American dream. I saw love, I saw bravery, I saw strength, I saw faith. And I believe that God showed me those things so that I could reflect that in my novels.

A wonderful thing happens when we’re reading a book. We jump into the shoes of the main character. We understand their plight. Their hopes are our hopes. We feel their story, their dreams, their love, their anguish, their joy. That is one of the great things about reading. We escape our own lives for a while and experience a new adventure, gain a new understanding. We go places and meet people and do things we would never be able to in our own lives.

So that is what God placed on my heart to share with the world: an authentic experience of a mother and daughter who are undocumented Christians.

It’s controversial, but then so was the Gospel. What is more controversial than Jesus’ teachings? To love those who hate us. To turn the other cheek. To give away all possessions to join Him. I mean, what is more controversial than being asked to believe that a man born over 2,000 years was the Son of God and was risen from the dead after three days and that giving one’s heart over to Him will save one’s soul so as to live for all of eternity with God in Heaven?

And yet, that is the very heart of the Gospel.

To love God and to love others.

So, in the spirit of loving God and listening to Him, I wrote Vivir el Dream and published it even when the world pushed against it and continues to do so, perhaps more now than in 2012. All the more reason to love our neighbor more and to hold tighter onto God and His teachings.

I hope you enjoy my book. I hope it takes you on a new, heartwrenching adventure that carries you from the anguish in crossing a desert with your three-year-old daughter on your hip to the freedom in cooking tamales in the kitchen while swaying to cumbia, from the stabbing fear of living in a country that doesn’t want you to experiencing the joy of first love, and from the desperation of staring down an empty barrel to the understanding of truth for your fellow man.

God bless. And happy reading.

Reforesting Faith by Matthew Sleeth

“Reforesting Faith, What trees teach us about the nature of God and His love for us, is a most interesting book on faith, walking with God, and trees of the Bible.  Author Matthew Sleeth has written a 224 page Christian Living book divided into three parts.

The first part is “Laying the Groundwork”.  It has three chapters followed by “Seeds of Faith” which has six.  The last section is “Fruit of the Tree” with four chapters.  The book finishes with an Epilogue, “Why I wrote this book”, and notes.  I was disappointed there were no study or discussion questions .

This is a refreshing look at book nature, trees, and God’s love.  It was the first selection from author Sleeth that I have read and I really enjoyed his style.  He has an easy way of making his point as if in a conversation.  The words moved steadily and effortlessly without a hitch across the pages.

Scripture was not sprinkled but given in a heavy handed dose throughout this God glorifying gem.  The author had done research on every chapter and it shows.  This book is well planned, well organized, and well written.

It gave me things to ponder.  Did I realize all of these references were in the Bible which I have read numerous times?  Well, no.  I missed a lot.  I thought of so many people I wanted to share this book with while savoring the nuggets of information it taught.

Both men and women will enjoy this wonderful book.  Nature enthusiasts especially will appreciate it.  I highly recommend it.  It gets a 5 out of 5 rating from me for the writing, because I have never read anything like it, and it is a book that will help strengthen one’s Walk with God.

An advance reader copy (ARC) was provided by the publisher but I was under no obligation to write a review.  This is my honest opinion.

About the Book

The Bible talks about trees more than any living creation other than people. Perhaps you’ve missed the forest…and the trees.

In this groundbreaking walk through Scripture, former physician and carpenter Dr. Matthew Sleeth makes the convincing case why trees are essential to every Christian’s understanding of God.

Yet we’ve mostly missed how God has chosen to tell His story–and ours–through the lens of trees. There’s a tree on the first page of Genesis and the last page of Revelation. The Bible refers to itself as a Tree of Life (Proverbs 3:18).
Every major Biblical character has a tree associated with them. Jesus himself says he is the true vine (John 15:1). A tree was used to kill Jesus–and a tree is the only thing the Messiah ever harmed.

This is no accident. When we subtract trees from Scripture, we miss lessons of faith necessary for our growth.

This is the rare book that connects those who love the Creator with creation, and those who love creation with the Creator. It offers inspirational yet practical ways to express our love for God–and our neighbors–by planting spiritual trees and physical trees in the world.

Join Dr. Sleeth as he navigates the Bible’s trail of trees to explore the wonders of life, death, and rebirth. You’ll be amazed at how science is just beginning to catch up to the truths described in Scripture thousands of years ago. Once you discover the hidden language of trees, your walk through the woods–and through Scripture–will never be the same.
