Do you enjoy cooking and baking? I certainly do. There is something about taking a number of different ingredients, mixing them together, and creating something yummy. A creation that makes the house smell warm and inviting. Homey. Love wafts out of the pan. It is so calming.

Are you a morning person? When the sun lights up your bedroom do you stretch and declare it a glorious day? Perhaps not and grumble while burrowing under your pillow. Some people need just 5 more minutes, which often turn into 45 minutes and they are still cranky.

My husband and I are totally different morning people. The old joke “Sometimes I wake up grumpy and other times I let him sleep” was written for us. He loves his sleep and can get a bit irritable if it is interrupted. After decades of awakening at 6:00 a.m. to go to work, he delights in sleeping “until he’s finished” as he puts it. Being in the Army has something to do with it, too.
Me? When the light shines and a wet nosed fur-baby greets me, I am ready to pray and get up. Thanking God for the new day and safety of the night, I begin my morning prayer before my feet hit the floor. The older I get the less sleep I seem to need. Are you at this age yet?

What is your relationship with mornings? Are you thrilled with the endless possibilities of the new day? Scripture tells us in Psalm 118:24 “This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” No time like the present. Get out of that bed and enjoy this gift from Abba.
The trajectory or path your day will take depends a lot on how you wake up or get up. Have you ever encountered someone so crabby you asked if he “got up on the wrong side of the bed today?”
Your and my day begins when we first open our eyes, stretch our arms or legs, and (hopefully) pray. Then when we hop out (do you hop out or like I do gingerly get out) of bed, we are ready to tackle the day with strength from our Father.
Just because the day started grumpy, doesn’t mean it needs to stay there. You are able to shake off that bad mood that began earlier. You have the power. Use it. Trade in the frowns for smiles.
I hope you start your days happy and give smiles away generously. If a cantankerous one slides in, exchange it for a happier one. There will always be time for napping later. Use today to bring glory to God.

Troday is Father’s Day. A day to celebrate fathers and all they do. We should do this everyday! Dads give everyday to us. At least mine does.
I treasure and adore him.
I am one lucky girl to have the amazing dad that I do. He is compassionate, intelligent, loving, faithful, generous, respected, and so much more than words could ever describe. A giant in faith he is a true son of God. Best of all, he came into our lives about a decade after my daddy was called home to be with the Lord. Dad voluntarily stepped into the role of “Dad” for me and my sister whole-heartedly.
God, our Heavenly Father, is so good and knows what we need, when we need it. He put Dad in our lives to help heal that broken spot that was ripped open when Daddy died. Dad has been a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and grandfather. God used a bad situation for good. I am forever grateful.
Sure there are times I still miss my Daddy. All girls need their daddies. I was just twelve years old.
Summer is here. It is a beautiful season! Already it’s hot in Southern Indiana. Are you ready to begin planting flowers or have you done that? Do you like to garden, too?
Gardening is something that soothes me. Nurturing seeds and seedlings into plants is relaxing and produces resulting that can be seen. The plants yield vegetables, fragrant herbs, or beautiful flowers. I love it all. Do you? My grandparents on both sides gardened and it is in my blood.

Of course, it takes care to get the desired results. I can’t just scatter the seeds and hope everything works. Seeds must be carefully planted and watered. Fertilizing or feeding helps give the plants nourishment to grow strong. I will want to protect them from things seeking to destroy them by eating them. Here we not only have bugs but critters like bunnies, groundhogs, and even deer that like to munch on tender young plants. Most importantly, they will also need sun. That will be beyond my control. When the little seeds have everything they need, voila, we are rewarded with plants.
A couple of years ago I purchased yellow squash seeds. I love yellow squash and have many recipes. The seeds went in the ground and I made certain they had everything they needed to thrive. I watered, fertilized, watched, and waited. The seeds sprouted into three tiny plants. Wow, I was happy. They continued to grow and finally the yellow blossoms appeared.
Yellow squash dishes ran through my head for what would be first. Would I have enough to share with others? Yes, more blossoms formed. I was excited. Finally the flower turned into a vegetable. Oh, no. A green zucchini! The seeds had been mispackaged. We like zucchini, but not three more plants worth when one had been planted.

My lesson was you reap what you sow. I thought I was planting yellow squash but really all along had zucchini seeds. I had a harvest of something I hadn’t anticipated. Even though I thought I was doing everything right, one thing at the beginning spoiled everything.
How true is this in areas of our life? We think we are doing something and put forth all of our energy to it. When it is finished we find we were off track and are reaping something we had not expected? It can be accidental like the seeds. Someone else tripped me on that one. Perhaps it is known but at the time it doesn’t seem like a big deal. Ignoring someone in a store or not inviting someone to your party might seem innocent, but what happens later?

Maybe we think our children aren’t watching how we treat some people, and grow up to mistreat them because we did. Our work habits are excessive to provide for our family and now our family has no time for us. Watch carefully what you sow so you don’t reap something unexpected.

With Mother’s Day tomorrow it made me think of all the women I have known. The ones that have crossed my path, shaped my faith, loved me, and some I haven’t seen in a long time. I couldn’t think about women without pondering the Proverbs 31 woman. Have you ever thought about her? She was a phenomenal lady, a Wonder Woman for her family and the community, and our role model.
i have always wanted to be a Proverbs 31 woman but have fallen short in many ways. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve tried. Really, really tried. I just can’t quite live up to those high standards. Do you know anyone who can?

What if that was written today? How would it sound? Who is today’s Proverbs 31 woman or is there really one today?
Can any man find a moral, virtuous wife?
She would be more valuable than diamonds or gold.
Her husband could trust her with everything,
Especially his love, and would lack nothing of true value.
She gives him her best and does not deceive him ever.
She does laundry, ironing, and makes delicious meals with loving hands and never complains.
Her alarm clock goes off while it is still dark so she can prepare breakfast, fix lunches, and fill the slow cooker with dinner before going to work.
She does not gossip, lie, or slander. Her word is true.
Never does she steal even one penny. She does not take from others.
She attends church each Sunday and has raised her children to go.
She gladly gives her time, money, and self to those that need it.
She helps those in need, giving money and food to young families and
Taking hot meals to elderly, staying to visit and clean for them.
She volunteers in the community and at church. She loves to help.
Her husband is respected in their church and community.
She does nothing to disgrace, only honor him.
She has a strength and dignity that she wears like a sweet perfume.
She trusts in God and does not concern herself with worry over the future.
She is wise and gives good, sound advice. When her girls need to know how to do something they turn to her for direction and instruction.
She keeps an immaculate house and is never lazy, always working to make her home better.
Her daughters call her a treasure and blessing. Her husband praises her, also.
Many women do noble things, but she is above them. She does everything with love for God and family.
Some women are only pretty on the outside, but she is a true woman of faith.
Beautiful inside and out.
Her family loves and cherishes this wonderful, beautiful, perfect for us Proverbs 31 woman.
As you might have guessed, this was rewritten for my precious, beloved Mother, our sweet Proverbs 31 woman. She is the best, most perfect woman for us. God blessed us by giving this amazing woman to our family. God is awesome. Isn’t He?
What about your family? Who are your Proverbs 31 women. Have you told them how fabulous they are? How loved and appreciated? Mother’s Day is a great time to show appreciation.
Happy Mother’s Day, Mom. You definitely are the Proverbs 31 woman of our family and loved beyond what we could ever say. Your daughters strive to be like you. You have the love of every one of us, and our gratitude, also. Thank you for all you do. Enjoy Mother’s Day and always. You are treasured and adored.
10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.
11The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.
12She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.
13She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.
14She is like the merchants’ ships; she bringeth her food from afar.
15She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.
16She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.
17She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.
18She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.
19She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.
20She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.
21She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.
22She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.
23Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.
24She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.
25Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.
26She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.
27She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.
28Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.
29Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.
30Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.
31Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.
My family is blessed with bakers bakers and cooks. Is yours? Are you one of them? We have so many on all the branches of my family tree that one year I decided it was time to corral all of the recipes into one large cookbook. What a fun project!

Going through the old recipes brought the treasured women and men that made or ate each delicacy to mind. I journeyed back to childhood, to church dinners, and even some camping trips. Holidays were relived along with weddings. It’s funny how food and a certain time or person can be connected.

Take yeast rolls and my sweet Aunt Eva June. She has not one recipe in my cookbook for them but four! Yes, she loves hot from the oven, light, fluffy yeast rolls. Even the smell of them brings her to mind. Bread is is absolute favorite treat, even above sweets.

My Aunt is a strong woman of faith and has been blessed by Abba. It would take pages to describe how exceptional she is. She has overcome Breast Cancer in a miraculous way. Only the touch of Jehovah Rapha, our God that heals could provide some of the news she has received.

Yeast rolls aren’t the only bread she loves. She loves Jesus, the Bread of Life and is not shy to enlighten anyone of His power. When we chat she never fails to tell me that she prays daily for us, misses us, and loves us. The goodness of God is always in our conversation, too. Acknowledging His plan for her life she says “He must not be finished with me yet and I want to do what He wants.”

What faith! To fight cancer in her eighties and keep such a positive outlook. She doesn’t need any encouragement from others but gladly gives it to everyone all for the glory of God.

In this thin place, Pearl travels to The Baby-Catcher Gate. What she experiences there transforms her and she becomes a catalyst of change for her hometown in the north woods of Minnesota. Folks will never be the same.
The Baby-Catcher Gate is a story about the beautiful consequences of peeking into heaven. Follow Pearl’s adventure and catch a glimpse for yourself.

Food and family have a way of going together. When added together they equal fun for my clan. Holidays, birthdays, new babies we have yet to see, or visits from our beloved out of town members are all valid reasons to have one. Actually no reason other than we haven’t seen each other in a while is necessary.

Everyone brings a favorite or specialty dish. Sometimes even more than one thing is carried in while folks try to guess what it is. Followed by yums and ooohs, the side or dessert is carried to the kitchen or designated area. The hosts normally provide the meat, breads, and drinks (coffee, iced tea and lemonade) while the rest of us fill in the other places. It is so much fun and food! Our family is blessed.
We always begin by counting off in a circle holding hands. After grace is said by Dad before he says “amen” we go around the circle again squeezing the person’s hand to our right. When it gets back to Dad, he says “and all God’s children said…” That’s when everyone joins in together with a big hearty Amen! After that the little kids jump and clap like something spectacular has happened. Actually it has.

Our family has managed to still lovingly get together long after my grandparents went to Heaven. They built a strong Christian foundation for their family. My cousins are as close as siblings. I know I can count on them for anything and vice versa. Their children are like nieces and nephews to me and are dearly loved. I pray for each one of them daily.
I am writing this nostalgic post today because I miss my Aunt Kathleen. She was my Mother’s older sister. At birthday gatherings and Christmas, Aunt Kathleen she would bring her famous Red Velvet cake to our family gatherings. It was legendary. The recipe is below, but as I wrote in my cookbook, “this is often made but never duplicated.” No one could make it quite like she did. Today I could use a piece of that cake and a cup of tea with her. We talked often, and I could use her ear today. I know she’s waiting in Heaven so we can catch up there later.

I hope you treasure your family as much as I do mine. Cherish the days you have with them. Make memories that will be happy stories to tell your children. Thank God for the family He has given you. Each person was especially placed there for you.

Prayer Warriors are constantly praying for someone. There is so much to lift up to God and it seems so little time. We intercede for the sick, lost, hurting, and needy. For the mother whose baby is desperately trying to stay in her womb to grow strong. For the father trying to work overtime or a second job just to make ends meet. For the teenager caught in the middle of making some life changing decisions. For our President and government leaders. Let’s not forget our family and friends.

See what I mean? We have so many people depending and deserving of our prayers. Years ago my niece, Phoebe, and I were talking about praying. She was little and not even in school. A friend had called me and asked if I could pray for her granddaughter. One thing led to another and I told Phoebe if she listened with her heart instead of her ears she could hear who needed her prayers. Many times God will tell us.
A couple of weeks later she was excited to tell me she felt her first prayer request. After dinner the night before she heard her Daddy say that a lady he worked with was going to be out because of surgery. “I don’t even know her name, Aunt Sissy, but my heart heard for me to pray for her.” Wonderful! She did understand what we were discussing. Right then we stopped everything and prayed for the woman. Now in her mid-twenties, Phoebe is still a Prayer Warrior.

On the flip side, I have someone that has been mad at me for over two decades. I can’t say exactly why, buy I have apologized and shouldered the blame in hopes of reconciling with this friend. A few times I have tried to have a “peace talk” with her, but it always goes no where. This last time, I asked how things had been going in her life and told her that I had been praying daily for her and our relationship. Then I asked if she prayed for me and our relationship, too. She looked at me as if my hair had just turned turquoise and laughingly said “no, why would I?”

Out of all the vicious remarks this friend has made, none hurt even a fraction as much as this one did. I thought everyone prayed for the people they loved. Maybe that was it, she had stopped loving me. All I know is that in that moment I felt so lost and alone. No one was praying for me? Prayer is the biggest blessing to give someone.
Ever feel like you are lost and alone with no one to lift you up in prayer? I have great news. You may pray for yourself. Yep, it is allowed. Also, the Holy Spirit will lift you up, too. You might be surprised to find some little Phoebes that have been listening with their hears and are praying for you.

There are no special words needed. No super formula. Just have a heart to heart with your maker. The Bible tells us in Romans 8:26“…but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”
We always have someone praying for us. No need to fret. Easy your mind and rest in the Lord. Oh, and keep praying!
